Apparently, the Nodoze popping, single-wing loving ferret in Houston Nutt's left pocket won't be hitting the unemployment line. After being ousted from his post in Razorbackijhan, Nutty Buddy has landed on his feet in Oxford. That's right, Houston Nutt is the new head coach at the University of Mississippi.

I can scarcely contain my glee. Seriously, SEC football is so much more fun with Nutt running around wild-eyed and grinning. The man's sideline demeanor is a walking illustration of what the world would look like if Red Bull energy drink were packaged as a suppository. The fact that he will be staying in the SEC West is just gravy. The Ole Miss/Arkansas tilt just went from being a toothpick fight to the death between two blind men to a toothpick fight to the death between two blind men, one of whom really, really hates the other.

I also think Nutt is a great fit because of his postgame interviews. As anyone who saw his post-LSU speech extolling the virtues of Darren McFadden can testify, the man has clearly read his Faulkner. Nutt's speeches are a break-neck, stream of consciousness tour through the Arkansas hills. I can't wait until SEC Media Days rolls around.

The unfortunate loser in this scenario is of course Ed Orgeron, who'll have to find alternate employment. His likely options include airboat captain, frog gigger and indecipherable Kentucky Fried Chicken drivethru attendant.

Whatever else one may say about Houston Nutt, this much we know: he's won more games in the SEC than Ed Orgeron probably ever will. Two appearances in the SEC Championship game in a 5 year span ought to buy you safety in a division that includes LSU and Auburn, even if you lost both of them. Look for Houston Nutt to try to find a 35 carry a game tailback and turn Jevan Snead into . . . well, Jevan Snead. I really don't have anything on that one. One thing Nutt inherits is the road-grading offensive line that manhandled us and posed serious problems for the rest of the SEC. He'll lose only center Thomas Eckers from that group.

Lots of names are also surfacing to replace Chan Gailey at Tech. The names heard most often in my informal survey of the internets include Will Muschamp, Chris Hatcher and Paul Johnson. I personally find it hard to believe that the Georgia Tech boosters will really get behind a 36 year old Georgia alum as their head coach. Ditto the 34 year old Valdosta State alum coaching at Georgia Southern.

Paul Johnson is a lot like the guy they just got rid of (crusty, runs an offense pulled from the pages of Life magazine circa 1962 . . .). The question is whether Tech wants to go all in for the triple option. In case you missed it, the knock on Johnson's offense is that it's difficult to recruit guys to fill it, and it takes a while to teach it.

Another contender is Florida State coordinator Jimbo Fisher. Fisher has been thought to be the heir apparent to Bobby Bowden in Tallahassee. However, you have to wonder if he'd be willing to jump ship now just to make sure he gets to sit in the big chair. Fisher is relatively young (he turned 42 last month), so I don't think he's reached that stage where any head coaching job will do. Interesting factoid: Fisher was the quarterbacks coach at Auburn under Terry Bowden and coached Georgia Tech offensive Coordinator Patrick Nix in that capacity. Stay tuned, this one should get entertaining.

There are a host of other coaching rumors and innuendos out there. I'd love to hear your leftfield guesses on who ends up where, as well as any speculation on who would be a good fit for what jobs. We gotta do something while we await our Bowl fate. . .

Michigan
English was interviewed by Michigan, which I am assuming was a requirement of Carr's retirement. But Ferentz is starting to get a lot of buzz instead of Miles. Maybe it's just me, but I think Ferentz' boat sailed a few years ago. They were a disappointment last year and this season has been a disaster on and off the field. Do you think the Michigan faithful will be excited with a guy that was 6-6 this year and has leveled off around the .500 mark at his current stint?

Also, things could get interesting at LSU... Miles could end up in Ann Arbor, Pelini is probably going to get a shot at Nebraska and other teams are looking at Crowton. Even if Miles stays put, he could be looking for a new DC and OC.

I also think A&M will be looking for another coach in 4 years.

Re: Ferentz to Michigan . . .
I've also kind of scratched my head about those rumors. Ferentz strikes me as Lloyd Carr with a little less mileage on the tires. I also note that his teams have a history of underperforming in big games. Wait a minute. I guess that's just another similarity to Lloyd Carr.

And I think that some of the luster has come off of Les Miles in the past few weeks as well. When it comes down to it, Les is the antithesis of the stoic Schembeckler/Carr line. The folks who idolized the one and hired the second are not going to suddenly go out looking for a guy who cannot seem to keep quiet.

I'd love to know if anyone has any thoughts on the Arkansas opening. Who is the crazy masochist who'll come running for that job? Butch Davis seems to have some nice momentum (and a contract extension) at North Carolina. Would he be interested anyway? Is that the place where Will Muschamp or Major Applewhite breaks into the head coaching ranks?

Houston Nutt
Houston Nutt belongs in the SEC.  At the minimum, he's excellent theater.  But more importantly, he has proven to be a thorn in Auburn's side on a number of occasions.  I sincerely hope he has great success at Ole Miss.

No way Muschamp goes to Tech.  Just be patient, young man.  If Tennessee whips LSU on Saturday, he might suddenly find himself on the Tiger's short list after they Tar and Feather Les Miles right there at the I-20/I-85 Interchange.

A.J Green
Hey what's going on?? Not sure where to put this comment but thought you would enjoy it. I'm sure ya'll been following the Bulldogs top recruit A.J. Green as much as I have. His team is in the South Carolina Class AAAA state final game this Saturday. I'm pretty excited to see him in action as I have seen some of his highlight videos. As I understand it, we can catch him online with a LIVE web feed of the Finals at SCHSLtv.com on Dec. 1 at 12 noon.

Nutt Presser
Uh, maybe that title wasn't the best choice, moving along...

I just saw Ole Miss' formal press conference to announce Houston Nutt as their Head Coach (they interrupted the 2002 SECCG where UGA destroyed Arkansas- man, that defense was great!).

Here are the key points from the press conference:

  1. Ole Miss has tradtion.
  2. You spell fun, W-I-N.
  3. Nutt's focus is the future.
  4. Leaving Arkansas was best for the Nutt family and the Arkansas family.
One humorous hightlight was when a reporter with a notably foreign accent through him "a curveball" question. Basically, she asked him, "Do you think it is odd that in your career of coaching at institutions of higher learning that you are the highest paid employee, yet you have very little to do with the education of most of the students?"
Nutt actually did a decent job answering the question, saying, "Uh, I don't think I have ever been asked that question before, but it's a good one. <pause> When I was growing up, my parents worked at the Arkansas school for the deaf (as a coach and teacher), and they never made more than $30,000, so I grew up not putting much focus on football." Then he wisely shifted to humor and finished up with, "But I have 4 kids that are in college or will be soon and as you know it's getting more expensive. Books are higher, tuition is higher, everything is higher, so I guess I am going to need some money to help pay for all that."

More on Ole Miss in the diary section...

SEC & GT Coaching news
ESPN has some rumor stuff up here:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3131855

Of interest to UGA fans:
Arkansas - possibles" Lane Kiffin, Butch Davis, Mike Leach & Tubberville. Arkansas would have to figure out how to overcome Tubbs buyout. Just speculating here, but if Tubbs leaves, would Muschamp get a shot at coaching Auburn?

Duke - interesting in David Cutcliffe. This would be great for UGA, so if you know any Duke alumni or power-brokers, talk up Cutcliffe.

Houston - Major Applewhite is a possible candidate.

Nebraska - apparently Bo Pelini's stock is down at Nebraska, so he might stay at LSU or look elsewhere.

So Miss - Muschamp and Tyrone Nix are both candidate, but Muschamp is up for some higher profile jobs. Getting Nix away from South Carolina could be a good thing.

GT - Neuheisel, Muschamp and... mystery candidate are being considered. What would be great is for Tenuta to feel spurned and walk. And if Neuheisel was hired, could Tech even mention "class" and "standards" in a debate with a Georgia?

Best case:
Tubbs out at Auburn
Cutcliffe to Duke
Muschamp or Nix to So Miss
Bo Pelini somewhere other than LSU
Billy Curry to Tech (we can dream, can't we?)
