Preseason BlogPoll Ballot (First Draft)

It's BlogPoll time!

I tried taking a wild stab at the top 10, but that was B.B. . . . before Bomar. Orson has given it his best shot, as has Nestor, and Dan has collected all the data, so surely I should be ready for this, right?

Well, I'm not entirely sure I am . . . and that's where you come into the picture.

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their weblog.

What follows is my preliminary preseason BlogPoll ballot. I have not yet submitted my top 25 for tabulation and I have a few days within which to ponder this awesome responsibility. Let me know what you think . . . where have I got it right, where have I got it wrong, and which teams are in the wrong sequence?

In compiling these rankings, I have given overarching consideration to two factors, per the BlogPoll rules.

First of all, I generally have tried to list teams according to which I believe would win on a neutral field on September 2, so that a team typically would be expected to lose to the team ranked directly above it but beat the team ranked directly below it.

Secondly, I have tried to assess how good these teams are right now, without regard to schedule strength or, particularly, upcoming head-to-head matchups . . . which, obviously, will help to clarify matters as they come to pass.

It all comes out in the wash.

Here is my tentative top 25:

Preseason BlogPoll Ballot:
  1. Texas
  2. Auburn
  3. Southern California
  4. Louisiana State
  5. Ohio State
  6. Florida
  7. California
  8. Michigan
  9. Notre Dame
  10. Iowa
  11. Louisville
  12. Texas Christian
  13. West Virginia
  14. Georgia
  15. Florida State
  16. Oregon
  17. Miami (Florida)
  18. Penn State
  19. U.C.L.A.
  20. Alabama
  21. Tennessee
  22. Navy
  23. Clemson
  24. Utah
  25. Oklahoma
Others Receiving Consideration: Arizona State, Arkansas, Boston College, Fresno State, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech.

I have my reasons for choosing the teams I did and placing them in this particular order, but, at this point, I'd rather hear from you.

Am I (as one Colorado fan wrote of me after reading my preview of the Bulldogs' game against the Buffaloes) a moron or have I offered (to borrow a phrase used by another C.U. fan in his response) a very fair preview?

The exercise of the franchise is a sacred trust not to be taken lightly. (Image from Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids.)

Let me know in the comments below. This is your opportunity to do what good Americans do . . . attempt to bring others around to your way of thinking through reasoned persuasion and civil discourse before matters are decided by being put to a vote.

Have at it.

Go 'Dawgs!

Right Now
If Auburn and Texas played right now, I would take the team that has the established QB.  My only suggestion is that teams with established QBs should be ranked ahead of teams with fresh QBs who are bound to make stupid plays and reads in the first few weeks of the season.  By the criteria given, my top 10 for a neutral site Sep. 2 slugfest would be Auburn, Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, Florida, West Va., FSU, Iowa, USC, and Cal.

Preseason polls are like...
trying to determine which first graders get placed into gifted or normal classes.  How do you know until they've figured out Tip and Mitten?  How do you really determine ability until you've been able to witness some achievement?

I enjoy the hype that preseason polls are, but I wish polls would not be unveiled until at least 2 or 3 weeks into the season...preferably October 1.

Having said that, I think Auburn should be disqualified from any chance to win a National Championship because, A: They're Auburn  B: Another weak non-conference schedule and only 4 away games!  Give me a break! And C: They're just plain crooked and I hate 'em like broccoli.

How 'Bout 'em!

Preseason Blogpoll
In the spirit of the democratic republic, I appreciate the opportunity to voice my opinion (since I consider you my blogpoll representative). I believe the preseason blogpoll you have created is fair but still requires a few revisions. The team of greatest contention appears to be Auburn. I disagree with dawg 05 and do not believe Auburn should be #1. Simply because Auburn has an "established QB" does not supersede their lack of depth on the defensive line and the questions in their secondary. Auburn's defense should improve under the direction of Will Muschamp, but his ability to turn water into wine has yet to be seen. Therefore, Auburn's poll position should be closer to #10 than #1. I do appreciate the fact that you have Navy (#22) ranked higher than Clemson (#23) and would like to see Clemson always ranked behind at least one service academy.
Finally, although I do not recommend it, you may consider changing your ranking to:
1. USC, 2. Cal, 3. Oregon, 4. UCLA, 5. Arizona State
Just so that none of your west coast readers can accuse you of displaying an East Coast Bias.
Thanks.
