A Game Day Dilemma

The good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I will be in Sanford Stadium on Saturday for my 20th consecutive home opener between the hedges.

While I am, of course, excited about the start of another football season in the Empire State of the South, I have a certain trepidation regarding this weekend's contest, as well. Here, in a nutshell, is my conundrum:

As you no doubt are aware, I am a firm believer in the importance of proper game day attire as a means for bringing Fortune's favor to the 'Dawgs. As you also probably know, I went to great lengths last Christmas to procure a 2005 S.E.C. championship cap.

Obviously, my decision to wear my 2005 S.E.C. championship cap brought the Bulldogs good luck on G-Day . . . but also bad luck. . . . Dang it, that's no help. . . .

Should I wear my 2005 S.E.C. championship cap to Saturday's season opener or should I go with my usual headgear? Is it liable to be luckier to display a tangible tribute to last season's improbable conference title run or would such an exhibition be an act of hubris that could only be viewed as tempting Fate? If I don't wear my 2005 S.E.C. championship cap to the Classic City, should I place the cap on the head of the Uga statue on my back porch?

This is a tough call and I do not want the 2006 campaign to get off on the wrong foot. Any advice and assistance my loyal readers could offer in the comments below would be most appreciated.

Either way, I'll see you in Athens on Saturday. I'll be the loud one wearing red and black.

The King,

While I see where you have a bit of a debate going on internally, I have to make the suggestion to stick with the tried and true method of Gameday Attire.

Yes, we are a very proud bunch of fans for winning when no one else expected us to finish but third in the SEC East, but that's no reason for forgetting the headgear that got you there.

Every true Dawg can bear witness in proclaiming that we are a tradition-laden bunch of fans. So much that I'll bet anyone who doesn't bleed red and black probably wants to rip off their ears when they hear about #34. So in keeping up with the nature of our beast, you absolutely must wear the gear that gets it done.

Remember, you didn't have the 2005 SEC Chamionship hat when we beat LSU. You didn't have it when we beat Auburn in 2002 for the SEC East title.

Stay with the sure thing.

Old hat

I a firm believer in "dancing with the girl you came with." A team hat should be worn until it is beat up such that it's structurally infeasible or socially unacceptable to wear. Only then should the headgear be respectfully retired.

Although championships should be greatly celebrated, it says more about you as a fan to sport worn-in headgear. A fresh cap says "I might be a brand new bandwagoner," whereas a worn cap says "I've been with these boys for some time."

Consider the record when considering the headgear

Remember that since that hat was created, our beloved Dawgs are 0-1. Call it mojo, or mumbo-jumbo, or bad ju-ju, or whatever, but I think that the 05 SEC Championship Hat is unproven. While it won't cause the Dawgs to lose (c'mon, it's freakin' Western Kentucky), the tainted hat could cause other problems (injuries, suspensions, etc.). I have to (pardon the pun) tip my hat to Jeff who said, "Dance with the girl you came with". Or perhaps, more accurately, no matter how fun the party was, the Lamp shade isn't the hat for the next big shindig. GO DAWGS!!!

head gear

I have to advise against the SEC championship hat. Those hats are for gloating in the offseason. Sporting that hat this year would send the message that you are satisfied resting on the victories of the past. Is that really the message you want to send?

It just makes me a little uneasy.

I completely agree with the previous posters. I would certainly go with the old hat.

Another possible dilemma, what's the proper food for tomorrow? I've seen Hilltopper Hot Dogs and Blue Cheese topped steaks mentioned. What are you planning? Any suggestions?

On a related note, while I like the little Urban ditty/hot dogs for the Florida game, wouldn't the logical choice be gator tail, or is that just too easy?
