Saturday Night Dawg Bites

July?  How the heck did it get to be July already?  For crying out loud, we're halfway through the year and barely two months away from football season.  We're wasting time already, so there's no sense in saying anything else.  Let's just jump right into it:  

• The latest Dawg Sports poll question certainly has sparked some interest, garnering many votes and provoking much discussion.  News of the poll, which had been disseminated already on T.C.U. and Utah message boards, has been spread through a posting at the Fresno State Football Blog, as well, and the question recently raised here soon will result in a posting at Pitch Right.  By all means, feel free to join in on the conversation in the comments below or in the diaries to the right.  
• There's an interesting rumor out there that West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez may be in line to replace Bobby Bowden at Florida State.  I find that hard to believe, since Coach Rodriguez is building a winner at his alma mater in Morgantown, and it appears probable that F.S.U. "executive head coach" Kevin Steele is being groomed as Coach Bowden's successor.  Either way, I'm just glad the focus has shifted to other candidates so I won't have to keep explaining to people why Mark Richt won't be returning to Tallahassee, but will remain in Athens, when Saint Bobby retires.  

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's coach.

• "The House Rock Built broke his chair.  He came right through a chair.  A metal steel chair with about a five-inch cushion.  He broke it.  The booth came apart.  Well, the stadium fell down.  Now they do have to renovate that thing.  This is incredible.  I didn't mean to beg Lindsay to run but I had to. . . ."  Sorry; Munson moment there.  I'm better now.  
• While we're on the subject of the Fighting Irish and national championships, Nico has resurrected the controversy over who was No. 1 in 1966.  

The Bear didn't believe in playing for one of these.

• On Wednesday morning, I mentioned the proposal to expand the N.C.A.A. tournament to 128 teams.  Michigan Sports Center has reported that this will not happen.  
• There are those who debate whether Maryland truly qualifies as a Southern state.  An argument that the Old Line State is part of the South may be mounted based upon the fact that Maize n Brew Dave, a Baltimore native, likes both Lynyrd Skynyrd and "Smokey and the Bandit."  That sounds pretty Southern to me.  On a more personal note, Dave, whenever we get Georgia and Michigan on one another's football schedules, fly into Atlanta a couple of days before the game in Sanford Stadium and I'll take you to some of the places where they filmed Hal Needham's cinematic masterpiece.

• It is no secret where I stand on the subject of getting married during football season.  Now, Kanu has offered his take, as well.  I may be an insensitive college football fanatic, but I would never let soccer interfere with a loved one's nuptials.  
• Finally, friends don't let friends drink and blog.
