Wednesday Morning Dawg Bites

Your work week is almost halfway gone, but there's still a lot you haven't gotten to yet and even more that you don't yet know, but don't worry . . . I'm from the blogosphere and I'm here to help.  Take it from me, this is what you need to be aware of to keep on top of things:  

• Do Americans care about sports?  Gaslamp Ball doesn't seem to think so; he contends that the only place he's seen a home-grown version of other countries' rabid devotion to soccer is in the area of intercollegiate athletics.  Of our fan dedication, Dex asks, "What exactly happens after we graduate from college?"  
• It has been a week for anniversaries.  Yesterday, Sunday Morning Quarterback commemorated a year in the blogosphere, while today marks the 10th anniversary of the night I proposed to my wife.  I'm pretty sure that virtually every Dawg Sports reader was there when it happened, but, for the three or four of you who weren't, it was in Athens and it involved a karaoke machine and my rendition of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love."

• I haven't mentioned The Movement in a while, but I take heart from the news that a home and home series between the Crimson Tide and the Buckeyes may be in the works.  The rivalry is a natural one, inasmuch as Ohio State is the Auburn of the Midwest, but, if Alabama can take on O.S.U., why can't Georgia square off with Michigan?  
• From what I hear, all the countries that don't answer to the nickname "The Last Remaining Superpower" are continuing to pester us with the World Cup, but, for those of us who were on the winning side of the Cold War, there is America's national pastime and your College World Series brackets are available.  The Diamond Dogs take the field against Rice at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.  For his part, Peter has graciously extended his congratulations to the Red and Black on making it to Omaha.  

Rice may not look like much, but the Owls are 55-11.

• Before the site went down yesterday afternoon, Every Day Should Be Saturday reminded us of George Godsey's touchdown run against Georgia in 2000, which did my morning no good and prompted a little trash talk from Nathan, to which I had to respond.  
• Now that it looks like he will make a full recovery from his injuries, I feel comfortable saying that Ben Roethlisberger is a bozo.  

Although I kind of owed a loyal reader another shot of Mary-Louise Parker, I didn't want to get a "cease and desist" letter from the guys at Showtime, so, since yesterday's picture of Phoebe Cates went over so well, I figured I'd go with another one.

• On a more serious note, Athletics Nation has called our attention to an area of need:  Jeremy, a founding father of SportsBlogs Nation, was rendered effectively homeless by a drunk driver who plowed a truck into his rented residence.  Thankfully, Jeremy and his family were not home at the time, so no one was injured, but they are in a tough spot financially as a result of the disaster.  For those who are interested, information on giving is available at Athletics Nation.  
• Finally, we have L.D. versus Beano Cook . . . not a fair fight!
