Just Like Herschel Used to Wear
As noted by Paul Westerdawg, Ohio State's uniform pants recently underwent a "change from shimmering gray . . . to a matte gray finish."

When Paul pointed out that the Georgia uniform had undergone a similar transition from silver britches to grey pants, I stated my preference for the traditional silver britches at home and red pants on the road.
At that point, our good friend 82 joined the conversation, pointing out both at the Georgia Sports Blog and at Dawg Sports that he had offered photographic proof of the wisdom of returning to red pants at Football Huddle 3.0.
My thanks go out to 82 for providing a latter-day example of just how good the red road britches would look if the look of the late '70s---last seen in Knoxville in the Bulldogs' 1980 season opener---were to be brought back in the 21st century.
Since the pictures he provided were too good not to share, I have taken the liberty of reproducing a couple or three of them below, with all due credit to 82 for doing such fine work on behalf of Bulldog Nation:

I hope to see the 'Dawgs take the field wearing red britches when Georgia plays Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Go 'Dawgs!

LOL! Indeed!
Thanks for the creds here. I have shown these to a couple of players and they loved them. I wonder if I should send these to CMR?

red pants, puhleeze.
Bigger, plain white numbers for jerseys. Ohio State's look great.
Smaller center white stripe on helmets (like they had @ G-Day).
Save red pants for clown convention.

clowns?
All I know is that if they were good enough for #34's first game and if current players like them, its good enough for me. Plus it would finally match all the fans gameday attire! I personally think they look great!
And by the way, the white stripe down the middle of the helment hasnt changed a bit since it was reintroduced in '01; even at GDay on Sat, it was the same width.

White Stripes
I was @ that UT game. Prolly my all time fav event, but never a fan of the reds. All white with black numbers. Check Old School pic on Dawgbone.
Makes you look fast, man.
Reds for a special event? Maybe, but reminds me of the dark days of Donnan, w/ his gimmicks (that never worked).

I'm totally with you, 82
One of the most famous images in Bulldog lore---Herschel running over Bill Bates in Knoxville---features the red pants, which, when coupled with the white jersey and the red helmet, make for a striking road uniform.
The silver britches tend to look washed out when worn with a white road jersey, like Tennessee's all-white road uniforms, and I like the contrast: red jersey with silver britches, white jersey with red britches.
If I were you, 82, I'd show them to Mark Richt, Damon Evans, and anyone else who might listen. Dawg Sports is behind you all the way!

ok then....here are 2 photos from the '05 USC game
The photos below are from the '05 USC game, the stripe is the same as it has always been for the last 5 years. Trust me, they havent messed with it.

ok den
Established programs tend not tinker w/ uni's too much. Our late 70's teams, and Donnan teams (both of which saw tinkering) were not performing near the level of Richt's boys. UT Horns ain't gonna run out wearing burnt orange pants. Noboby has changed hats & suits more than UK, VU, MSU, & Univ. of SC @ Columbia.

Red Pants
Still, not a huge fan. The silver looks sharp ... though I did like the black pants with the red shirt against Florida in 1998, just not the outcome of the game.

I certainly see your point, Zambeisi
Our difference of opinion regarding the red pants comes down to a matter of interpretation. You seem to see it as a deviation; I view it as a restoration. To my way of thinking, the red britches represent not a detour from tradition, but a return to tradition.
We're completely on the same page where the underperforming teams of the Jim Donnan era are concerned; I have no desire to see a return to the 1998 Outback Bowl black pants or the 1999 L.S.U. game white pants, even though both of those games were Georgia victories. The red jersey/black britches look from the 1998 Florida game made us look like Texas Tech (a team we should not want to emulate) and I consider the Jim Donnan helmet stripe the Georgia football equivalent of the mark of Cain.
However, I don't believe the late 1970s were a period of poor performance for the Red and Black. While 1977 was Vince Dooley's first and only losing season, the rest of the second half of the decade went pretty well.
The 1975 Bulldogs won nine games, suffered one conference loss, and went to the Cotton Bowl when the Cotton Bowl was still a major bowl game.
The 1976 Georgia squad won the S.E.C. championship and went to the Sugar Bowl to face eventual national champion Pittsburgh.
The 1978 "Wonderdogs" suffered a single regular season setback and came from behind to win numerous games, led by tailback Willie McClendon.
The 1979 'Dawgs may have been last in the A.C.C., but they fell one win short of finishing first in the S.E.C. and going to the Sugar Bowl.
I might feel differently if the red pants had been abandoned one game sooner than they were. If the 1979 season ender against Georgia Tech, rather than the 1980 season opener against Tennessee, had marked the occasion of the final appearance of the red britches, I likely would share your view.
History told a different tale, though. Had the Goal Line Stalker begun his legend wearing silver britches, I, too, might view the red road pants as an historical aberration, a mere fad from the '70s like the pet rock or the mood ring.
The reality is quite different: Herschel Walker made his Georgia debut wearing red pants. There are, to put it delicately, worse players and weaker eras to which "throwback"-style uniform changes could pay homage.

i agree with both of you
Donnan changing the stripe and color of the pants wasn't a good thing imo. I know the stripe is currently wider than Pre-Donnan. They had some left over in the 'back room' from when Goff was around and had to order a completely new set and they were absolutely a different size.
So I guess you could say that the strip that CMR uses is actually not of historical accuracy. Also, CMR has changed jersey's twice and pants once.
The jerseys are a completely different story. Throughout time the styles and materials have changed in a way that the looks get changed too. Ga has molded with these changes just as every other team out there. Mich went to a new uniform 2 years ago when Ga did. The tighter fitting uniform they currently have is a product of the style and the material is newer and more relevant in its purpose. I also like the sewn on numbers like we have now! One of Donnan's jersey's had it too.
I guess what I am trying to say is that when making a uniform change its important to keep up with the new technology and trends (for the recruits) but not to stray too far [VaTech,Miami,UF] to compromise historical credibility that I believe is as important as looking good. So that's where JD went wrong with black/white pants. I agree with Kyle in that the red pants wouldn't be a restoration, not a deviation! Plus I think they look killer! I have another idea for a uni-change that I will have out soon too.

Fair enough
Stylistically, though, I prefer sticking with tradition . . . hence, my support for the restoration of the traditional white helmet stripe, for Coach Dooley's revival of the silver britches tradition in 1980, and for the return to the use of red pants for road games.
By the same token, Jmac, I didn't care for the look from the 1998 Florida game, for three reasons. First of all, as I noted before, it made Georgia look like Texas Tech, which is a huge step downward for the 'Dawgs.
Secondly, the Gators beat the Bulldogs, 38-7, so, obviously, the red jersey/black pants look carries all sorts of bad mojo and should never be used again for that reason alone.
Finally, the combination of black pants with red jerseys was a first. Prior to October 31, 1998, Georgia had never in its storied history worn such a uniform. For a school like Florida to show up wearing jerseys with one orange sleeve is no big deal; the Gators have only had a tradition since the 1990s, so who cares if they dress like Cher?
The Bulldogs, however, have had a tradition since the 1890s. Uniforms with no antecedent prior to Halloween 1998 probably ought to be avoided purely on principle.
