Should Mark Richt Bring Back Brian VanGorder?
Despite the Bulldogs' impressive effort in Georgia's recent win over Auburn, I continue to question Willie Martinez's fitness to serve as the Red and Black's defensive coordinator.
Head-to-head comparisons between Coach Martinez and his predecessor, Brian VanGorder, are not favorable to Georgia's current defensive coordinator, which is partly why Coach VanGorder remains such a beloved figure in Bulldog Nation.
The question, then, is a simple one: "Can we get Coach VanGorder back?"
I'm not so sure we couldn't. I am told by an old friend of mine who practices law with a Georgia Southern booster that many in Statesboro were not pleased when the Eagles' most recent coaching hire came from outside the G.S.U. family. Even though the current incarnation of Georgia Southern football quite literally was founded by a former Georgia defensive coordinator, the selection of Coach VanGorder was unpopular among some Eagle boosters.
Earlier this afternoon, Georgia Southern fell to Central Arkansas in an overtime game in Statesboro, dropping the Eagles to 3-8 for the season. G.S.U. ended the 2006 campaign riding a five-game losing streak and the Eagles dropped six of their last seven decisions.
It is open to question just how long a leash Coach VanGorder is on in Statesboro and his days there may already be numbered. It seems clear that Mark Richt is not going to jettison Coach Martinez at the end of this season, so both Brian VanGorder and Willie Martinez will have something to prove in 2007.
If neither man shows significant improvement in his present position next fall, should Coach Richt pull the trigger on replacing Willie Martinez with the man Willie Martinez succeeded but could not replace?

The King, I think you're jumping the gun...
You see, against Auburn we did something that we really haven't tried or been able to do all season - we pressured the QB. As BVG's system proved, pressure forces mistakes, mistakes force turnovers, and turnovers SHOULD develop into points.
I'm not of the mindset that WM needs to be replaced quite yet. It's a pretty popular opinion that his best talent is still very green and/or wearing a redshirt this year. Next year should be the time when we find out what this man's scheme is really all about.
As far as BVG's days at GSU being numbered, I think the Eagle faithful have to give the man a chance. He's coaching a team whose main goal was to run the triple option, which we all know is not VG's strength. Give his guys an opportunity to learn his system and then let's see if he's Bulldog bound again.
I know you're not calling for any changes to be made, because you're much more calm than that. I just think that next year you're going to see two much improved teams in the Eagles and the Bulldog D.
Let's just hope I'm right...but if I'm wrong, hell, let's welcome BVG right back to Athens.

Patience
Of course, if Tech wins on Saturday, then off with his head.
By the way...Jake Scott will be there as an honorary captain. How incredibly and utterly cool is that?
How 'bout 'em!

Why did he go?
WM pulled a job saver with Auburn and to some extent Florida. Of course, we now know neither has a prolific offense. We need a coach who coaches ALL games, not on the eve of a firing.
