Saturday Champions League Final/Preakness Stakes Open Comment Thread
Or, in other words, "Open Comment Thread for Sports that Kyle Doesn't Like."
Don't get me wrong... there are Georgia sports today. Baseball is wrapping up their series with Alabama, and there is a veritable cornucopia of NCAA postseason competitions today in Athens, with the softball, tennis, and golf teams all taking the field of play in the Classic City.
But for the soccer world, today is the conclusion to the most prestigious club competition in the world... the UEFA Champions League. Coverage starts at 2:00 Eastern on the Fox Network (yes, that's the "real" Fox, not Fox Soccer Channel, so pretty much everybody should be able to get it). The contenders in this match are Chelsea and Bayern Munich... so let's all start learning soccer chants in German, y'all! (I suspect "Chelski" is unchanged when translated.)
The UEFA Champions League also has the benefit of having the most elegant, beautiful anthem in all of the sports world. Only "Glory, Glory" is better, and only because it's Georgia. Just take a listen:
The lyrics are in English, French, and German, and can be located here. It's also worth noting that the tune is an adaptation of Zadok the Priest, one of the anthems composed by Handel that has been played at the coronation of English monarchs for centuries.
There's also some horse race today that, I'm told, will probably confirm the fact that we will not have a Triple Crown winner in 2012.

As one might expect, with the level of traffic we regularly receive at Dawg Sports, we show up in a lot of search results. Generally, most of our search-result visitors have entered something fairly predictable, like "Georgia Bulldogs football," "did Georgia win last night," "Georgia has more national championships than Alabama," or something like that. (Ok, not that last one. But still.)
And then, we have the outliers. Any comments by me are in (parentheses), and I have excluded all of the NSFW results. All of the following search terms have been used to reach a page or picture on the dawgsports.com website within the last 7 days:

The Diamond Dogs arrived at the ballpark on Friday night tied with Vanderbilt for the league’s longest active winning streak and needing a single triumph to clinch a series victory and ensure themselves of a regular-season record above .500 in SEC play. Alabama, meanwhile, took the field sporting the conference’s worst record and with no chance of qualifying for a spot in Hoover. Despite a respectable performance from starter Michael Palazzone (8 IP, 6 K, 1 BB, 4 ER), Georgia suffered an embarrassing 4-0 setback at the hands of the worst team in the league.
Third baseman Curt Powell led off the top of the first frame with a base hit, and right fielder Hunter Cole was hit by a pitch to put two aboard with one out, but the next two Red and Black batters both stared at called third strikes. The host squad obligingly responded by erasing a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the inning with a double-play grounder. Only one team would perpetuate that misguided theme of Southern hospitality throughout the contest.
SEC & Big 12 Champs to Face Off in Postseason
As Jason Kirk points out in the article, watching the Cotton and Sugar Bowls fight over who hosts this is going to be absolutely perfect. Geographically, it's a slam dunk, from a style of play and also a travel standpoint. It possibly renews old rivalries (you think Texas vs. A&M wasn't referenced?) and will mean big money for whoever hosts it.
Since details are light, what are your initial thoughts on this?

The critically important final weekend of SEC play in baseball got underway on Thursday, as usual, and the Diamond Dogs arrived in Tuscaloosa, if not exactly on a roll, then at least without having lost on Tuesday, which is more than a lot of conference clubs can claim. Georgia secured the victory, carding an 8-4 win that was harder than it had to be.
Despite a one-out double by shortstop Kyle Farmer and an ensuing walk by right fielder Hunter Cole in the top of the opening inning, the first frame was scoreless, so it was not until the visitors’ half of the second stanza that either team made it onto the board. Four consecutive one-out singles by designated hitter Jared Walsh, first baseman Colby May, left fielder Conor Welton, and third baseman Curt Powell pushed one run across and left the bases loaded for Farmer, who drove in three with a triple. Cole’s subsequent sacrifice fly made it 5-0.

This is the final series of 3 posts from the 1897/1898 era of Georgia football. In my first two posts, I studied the tragic set of circumstances and aftermath of Von Gammon's death. For this edition of History Learnin', though, I'm lightening the mood a bit and sharing a few articles that outline the state of Georgia athletics during this time.

Mark Richt Hires New Director of On-Campus Recruiting
Daryl Jones has spent the last 17 years as a high school football coach and athletic director in the state, at Glynn Academy, Griffin High School, Wayne County High School, North Oconee High School, Oconee County High School, and Grayson High School. He was named the Georgia high school athletic director of the year in 2005, and he has managed Under Armour camps and combines (including seven-on-seven projects), as well as coaching in the Under Armour All-American Game.
Basically, Mark Richt has just made a hire analogous to the one Mr. Sanchez (correctly) keeps urging Mark Fox to make.
