Miami Gardens, FL (Sports Network) - Craig Cooper ran for 90 yards and a score to lead the Miami-Florida Hurricanes to a 20-14 victory over the UCF Knights in a non-conference bout at Dolphin Stadium.
The Miami defense put forth a solid performance, which was good news for the Hurricanes (3-3), as signal-caller Robert Marve completed just 8-of-19 for 74 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
The Knights (2-4) had little to brag about on offense, as Rob Calabrese threw for a meager 74 yards with no touchdowns, and led the club in rushing with 25 yards on 13 attempts.
A 25-yard toss from Marve to Travis Benjamin midway through the first quarter gave the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead.
The Hurricanes added a 35-yard field goal from Matt Bosher late in the frame to take a 10-0 lead into halftime.
The Knights finally got on the board midway through the second quarter, as an interception by Johnell Neal was returned for a 62-yard score.
Miami's defense responded with a crucial safety early in the fourth frame, pushing the Hurricanes advantage to 12-7.
Miami added a five-yard touchdown run by Cooper and a successful two- point conversion attempt late in the period to extend its advantage to 20-7.
However, Joe Burnett returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Knights deficit to 20-14.
Fortunately the defense for Miami was able to hold strong, as the Hurricanes went on to win by a six-point margin.
