Recap: Michigan vs. Toledo

Sports Network | October 11, 2008

Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Michigan's K.C. Lopata missed a 26-yard field goal with four seconds remaining, as the Toledo Rockets knocked off the Wolverines, 13-10, in a non-league bout in Ann Arbor.

Aaron Opelt threw for 257 yards on 33-of-50 pass attempts to pace the Rockets (2-4), while Nick Moore hauled in 20 passes for 162 yards. With the outcome, Toledo is the first Mid-American Conference member to defeat Michigan in 25 games.

Sam McGuffie gained 105 yards on the ground for Michigan (2-4) and he also led the team with five receptions for 44 yards. Quarterbacks Nick Sheridan and Steven Threet, though, struggled, as they combined for a mere 120 yards through the air with three interceptions and one touchdown. The Wolverines are now off to their worst six-game start since 1967.

Toledo struck first, as Tyrrell Herbert picked off a pass and took it 100 yards for a touchdown late in the opening quarter.

Michigan countered behind a 27-yard touchdown pass from Threet to Brandon Minor with 23 seconds left in the first period.

Lopata connected on a 26-yard field goal early in the second quarter and Michigan would end up carrying its 10-7 lead to the break.

The Rockets tied the score with an Alex Steigerwald 29-yard field goal midway through the third quarter.

A 48-yard field goal from Steigerwald early in the fourth quarter proved to be all the Rockets would need in an eventual 13-10 victory.

Michigan had a chance to tie the game, but Lopata's 26-yard field goal attempt was off the mark in the closing moments.

The Wolverines turned the ball over three times and managed just 290 total yards in the loss.
