Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Head football coach Bill Stewart signed a six-year contract with the University of West Virginia, director of athletics Ed Pastilong announced Friday.
Stewart will make $800,000 this year with an annual increase of $50,000.
He was named the Mountaineers football coach on January 3, 2008, after leading West Virginia to a 48-28 upset victory over No. 3 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Stewart replaced Rich Rodriguez, who bolted for the same position at Michigan at the end of the regular season.
Stewart has compiled a 2-1 record thus far with the Mountaineers. He is 10-26 in his career as a head coach, which includes a stint with Virginia Military Institute from 1994-1996. He has been coaching football in different capacities since 1977.
Currently ranked 25th in the nation, West Virginia returns to the gridiron on Thursday, September 18, with a non-conference matchup at Colorado.
