Georgia Bulldogs Track and Field

Track and Field Report: 9 Dawgs getting ready for Indoor Championships

The NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held this upcoming weekend (March 9-10) in Nampa, Idaho just outside of Boise (yes, that Boise). This past weekend, at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet in Blacksburg (kinda' reminds me of a package store on 441 at the Clarke/Oconee County Line in about 1979...), Senior triple-jumper Colleen Felix improved enough to earn a #14 national ranking, earning her a spot in the Championships. Meanwhile, two other Georgia women will accompany Felix to Idaho: Junior high-jumper Saniel Atkinson and freshman pole-vaulter Morgan Leleux.

The Georgia men's side will be well represented in Boise, sending 6 Dawgs to the event:

  • Torrin Lawrence, 4x400 relay, 400 meter dash
  • Aaron Evans, 800 meter run
  • Philip Adams, Waymon Storey and Chris Foster, 4x400 relay
  • Cory Holman, heptathlon

Torrin Lawrence. He runs real fast.

Torrin Lawrence, a senior from Jacksonville, is a two-time SEC 400 meter dash champion and is the national leader in this event. He is also the anchor of the 4x400 relay team. Lawrence has posted a national best time in the 400 meter dash of 46.01 seconds. His main competition will come from Mississippi State's Tavaris Tate (46.10) and Florida's Tony McQuay (46.11). Ess Eee See Speed, baby!

ESPN3 will carry Day 1 events (Friday, 7:30 P.M.) and Day 2 (Saturday, 8:00 P.M.) Live and in Living DSL. For all preliminary events, check out ncaa.com.

Georgia Men's Track Team Finishes Third at SEC Indoors for Bulldogs' Best Finish in 18 Years

Fresh from signing four Peach State prep stars (including one from my old high school!), the Georgia track and field teams headed to Lexington for the SEC Indoor Championships over the weekend, ultimately notching the Red and Black’s best finish at the league-wide event since 1994.

On the first day of competition, Bulldog heptathletes set four personal-best marks and carded a pair of first-place finishes in the first four heptathlon events. Cory Holman won the men’s 60-meter dash, while Garrett Scantling came in first in the high jump.

Georgia Track Athletes Have Record Days During Trio of Weekend Meets

In preparation for the upcoming SEC Indoor Championships, the Georgia track and field teams sent split squads in three different directions to compete in the Husky Classic, the Tiger Paw Invitational, and the Tyson Invitational last weekend.

In Seattle, Brett Richardson carved his name into the Bulldog record books with the fifth-best 5,000-meter meet run time in school history, while Morgan VanGorder---yes, that VanGorder---recorded a personal-best 17:20.79 time in the women’s 5,000. The following day, Aaron Evans broke his own school record with a 1:47.88 800-meter run at the University of Washington meet, where Megan Malasarte carded a personal-best 2:07.76 in the women’s 800 to take fourth overall in Red and Black history.

Georgia Track and Field Teams Card Wins, Set Records at Auburn Invitational

Taking part in the season’s second indoor meet, the Georgia track and field team competed as one of twelve squads participating in the Auburn Invitational in Birmingham (which I always thought Auburn fans thought was an Alabama town, but the Tigers’ use of the Magic City as a host site for one of their events indicates otherwise). The Bulldogs joined Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Tennessee among the entrants.

A pair of Athenians finished in the top four in the weight throw on Friday, with sophomore Justin Welch winning the event with a hurl of 65 feet, seven and a half inches. Two more Georgia wins followed on Saturday, as senior Aaron Evans, one of two Bulldogs to finish in the top five in the 800-meter run, came in first with a time of 1:52.29. Morgann Leleux, who arrived at the Birmingham Crossplex as the current SEC freshman of the week, topped all competing collegians in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13 feet, seven and a quarter inches.

Senior Torrin Lawrence, the SEC men’s runner of the week, came in second in the 400-meter dash with a 47.53 time. A busy weekend of Red and Black athletics culminated with freshman Tynia Gaither turning in a 200-meter dash time in her first intercollegiate action that placed her in the top ten all-time in school history. Though Gaither’s 24.15 lap time placed her second in her heat, it was good enough for sixth place in the Georgia record book.

Georgia Bulldogs Take Down Missouri Tigers in Track and Field

While we’re waiting to learn whether the Bulldogs are going to get in the second half of their softball doubleheader tonight, I should take a moment to let you know that the Georgia track and field teams swept their dual meet with Missouri at the Spec Towns Track this afternoon.

In their final home meet before hosting the SEC Outdoor Championships in mid-May, the Red and Black notched a total of 26 individual or relay victories in the course of outscoring the visiting Tigers 111-81 in the men’s events and 121-80 on the distaff side.

In setting a career-best mark of 10:25.94 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Taylor Adams posted the second-fastest time in school history, while Nikola Lomnicka gave a season-best effort with 212-foot, three-inch hammer throw. Alesha Asijie’s second-place toss of 188 feet, five inches, represented a personal-best result for her.

Additional career longs for Georgia athletes were set by Brian Moore with a javelin throw that measured 241 feet, 11 inches; by Burke McCarty with a 174-foot, two-inch discus throw; and by T.J. Davilmar and Caleb Whitener with shot puts covering 58 feet, 5.75 inches, and 58 feet, 2.5 inches, respectively. Carin Walker’s 1:03.7 time in the 400 hurdles was her top time in that event for the season.
