Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Women's Softball, Men's Golf Advance in NCAA Tournaments
Dawg Sports has been keeping you up to date on athletic developments this weekend, from baseball disasters to UEFA Champions League soccer matches, and, of course, a full tennis recap will be forthcoming, but there are more sporting events being played in Bulldog Nation than it is practical to address individually, so we save some outcomes for inclusion in what we call the Sunday sports summary. Here are the results you may have missed:
The Georgia women’s softball team opened play in the NCAA Athens Regional by beating Coastal Carolina like a redheaded stepchild on Friday. Though the Chanticleers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the initial inning, the Bulldogs battered CCU, scoring at least two runs in each of the first four frames to card a run-rule decision in which the Red and Black led by nine in hits (12-3) and by ten in runs (13-3). Erin Arevalo fanned five to take the victory, while Gracie Goulder went three for three and scored thrice.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Golf, Softball, Track and Field All Stumble Down Stretch to Disappointing Finishes
The academic year is coming to a close, so several Bulldog sports squads are engaged in significant conference and national competitions. Some of these clubs, such as the baseball and tennis teams, receive individual attention here, but, where comprehensive coverage is impractical, we try to keep important events from slipping through the cracks by providing brief wrapups in what we like to call the Sunday summary. Here are the short versions regarding a few contests you may not have noticed, but should not overlook:
I know I noted, supra, that the Diamond Dogs ordinarily receive individual coverage on a game-by-game basis here, which typically is the case, but, in this particular instance, I thought the Sunday summary was the place to mention that this afternoon’s rubber match between Georgia and South Carolina was canceled due to inclement weather. Honestly, this probably is to the Bulldogs’ benefit, as the Classic City Canines sit at .500 in conference play, and the two-time defending national champion Gamecocks likely would have taken the series on Sunday had the game been played. The Athenians’ chances of finishing the season with a winning record in SEC play, while still slim, improved due to the rainout. Lady Luck may seldom smile down on the Red and Black, but, today, Mother Nature probably did.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Softball Wins 40th, Bulldog Wins Stadion Classic, Postseason Fields Set
Bulldog Nation is a busy place, so much so that it’s tough to keep up with every game, match, meet, and tournament involving University of Georgia student-athletes. Accordingly, rather than attempt to recap each event separately, we reserve reports on certain contests for inclusion in what we like to call the Sunday summary. Here are a few noteworthy occurrences we wanted to make certain didn’t slip through the cracks:
In Saturday’s doubleheader, Georgia split a pair of one-run decisions against Arkansas, taking the opener by a 3-2 margin thanks to a two-run first frame in which Tess Sito reached on an error and came home on a sacrifice fly, a one-run seventh stanza in which Sito sent a two-out single to center to drive in the winning run, and a three-hit, two-run, six-strikeout, complete-game pitching performance by Erin Arevalo.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: 2012 NFL Draft Edition
The 2011-’12 academic year is winding down, but the Red and Black still are going strong in several sports, so much so that it is difficult to give individual attention to each athletic endeavor in which University of Georgia undergraduates are engaged. Consequently, it is necessary for us to address some competitions with greater concision than that for which I ordinarily am known in a segment we like to call the Sunday summary:
Seven Georgia Bulldogs were drafted by professional football teams over the weekend, as Cordy Glenn was taken by the Buffalo Bills in the second round; Ben Jones was taken by the Houston Texans, Orson Charles was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals, and Brandon Boykin was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles, all in the fourth round; Blair Walsh was taken by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round; and Justin Anderson was taken by the Indianapolis Colts and DeAngelo Tyson was taken by the Baltimore Ravens, both in the seventh round (making Bean the first Bulldog drafted in an odd-numbered round). Naturally, we wish all these damn good ‘Dawgs well as they begin their post-collegiate careers, and we likewise send our regards to undrafted NFL hopefuls (some of whom already have signed as free agents) Brandon Bogotay, Drew Butler, Bruce Figgins, Israel Troupe, and Aron White.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Softball Falls, Kat Ding Shines, and Lax Rematch Set
As the site’s name implies, we here at Dawg Sports cover University of Georgia athletics comprehensively, and many sports (including golf and tennis, for which SEC tournament final recaps are forthcoming) are the subject of individual postings specific to a particular athletic endeavor. However, Bulldog Nation is a busy place (so much so that an open comment thread sometimes is required), and, consequently, circumstances dictate that we, like Inigo Montoya, periodically lack the time to explain, and, therefore, must make do with summing up, which is why I now bring you the Sunday sports summary:
After Wednesday night’s game against Georgia Tech was rained out, the twelfth-ranked Georgia softball team carded a nationally-televised 7-4 victory over No. 2 Alabama on Thursday night by building up a 7-0 lead after two innings and holding on to notch the victory.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Baseball and Softball Drop SEC Outings
Yes, I know, yesterday was G-Day, and, yes, I know, you’re interested in a recap, but give me a break, folks; it was an intra-squad scrimmage, and I spent five hours sitting out in the sun in Athens yesterday, and there were actual intercollegiate outings pitting University of Georgia student-athletes against undergraduates from opposing post-secondary institutions, so cut me some slack, and take a moment to run through the Sunday sports summary:
I was at Foley Field for this sorry showing, so I want to give it the shortest shrift possible. On Saturday afternoon, Ole Miss defeated Georgia, 8-3, to avoid being swept by the Diamond Dogs. Closer Blake Dieterich got the start and took the loss, lasting three and a third innings during which he gave up nine hits and four earned runs. The Rebels took a 2-0 lead with two outs against them in the first frame, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no one out in the second stanza yet plated only one run, and the Red and Black were out-hit, 20-10, in a poor performance in which the Classic City Canines stranded eleven baserunners in an absolute stinker.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Besides Bubba, We Mean
Happy Easter! The week just past was a bit of a light one for Georgia athletics, and you already know about the men’s lacrosse team’s big SELC win at Clemson, the Diamond Dogs’ three-game series with Arkansas, the Gym Dogs’ NCAA Regional victory, and, of course, Bubba Watson’s thrilling Masters victory in a sudden-death playoff. As usual, a tennis recap will follow shortly, but, for now, I bring you brief recaps of the rest of the Bulldog sports news (including an update on G-Day!) in the Sunday summary:
In a midweek doubleheader between two top ten teams, the Georgia softball team went 1-1 against Tennessee on Wednesday. The opening outing of the twin bill was an extra-inning affair, which was won by the Bulldogs on a run-scoring single by Paige Wilson in the visitors’ half of the eleventh canto. Erin Arevalo carded the complete-game victory with a nine-strikeout performance in the 3-1 triumph. Alas, the Lady Vols evened the two-game set in the nightcap, handing the Red and Black a 2-1 setback. Morgan Montemayor went the distance in the loss, fanning six but surrendering a pair of runs on four hits to fall to 8-4 for the campaign.
Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Summary: Softball, Soccer Squads Split Doubleheaders
We’ve already covered how the Bulldogs fared in this weekend’s baseball games and lacrosse matches, and we’ll be bringing you up to speed shortly on the results of contests involving the Georgia equestrian and tennis teams. However, because spring is a busy season for the Red and Black, wrapping up the recent action for the Classic City Canines requires taking the Inigo Montoya approach; rather than explain, therefore, I will provide you with the Sunday sports summary:
On Wednesday, Erin Arevalo delivered a two-hit, ten-strikeout, complete-game performance in the circle to produce a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern that set the stage for a weekend SEC series between No. 9 Georgia and No. 4 Florida. A Saturday doubleheader produced a split decision, with the Red and Black taking a 3-2 victory in the opener behind another complete game by Arevalo, who fanned eight.
