Georgia drops three straight to Kentucky to open SEC play

The Georgia Bulldogs turned in a disappointing week of baseball this past week as the Dawgs suffered a three game sweep against the Kentucky Wildcats to open up SEC play. Georgia opened up their week on the right track as they topped Iowa by a final score of 10-5 as it would be their only win of the week. Prior to the Kentucky series, there was speculation on if the Dawgs were legitimate contenders in the SEC as they had been red hot all throughout non-SEC play and on the brink of being nationally ranked. Due to the ugly series outcome though, the hype and speculation has probably simmered down a bit as there are still question marks surrounding this team, especially the pitching staff. Georgia’s pitching staff turned in quite the disappointing performance all throughout the series as the Dawgs gave up 37 total runs to Kentucky as the Georgia’s offense just couldn’t keep up. The Diamond Dawgs still sit at an impressive 17-4 on the season as they will now get ready for a Tuesday match-up against the Terriers of Wofford. Following that game, Georgia will look to get back on track in SEC play as they will settle in for a three game set against the fourteenth ranked Alabama Crimson Tide with game one kicking off on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Foley Field.

Your Georgia Bulldogs have now wrapped up two days of spring practice, on the way to a total of 15 sessions culminating with the annual G Day scrimmage on April 13th.

Rebirth vs. Reloading

If there’s a theme to this spring it’s probably “renewal”, an appropriate watchword for this time of year when everything in northeast Georgia begins to bloom anew (and you begin buying Claritin in bulk). But if you think you’ve got a headache, you should see what Kirby Smart is dealing with. 58 of the 85 scholarship players on his roster have been in Athens less than two seasons. There are 28 newcomers, between freshmen and transfers, who hadn’t experienced Smart’s famously-focused, intense practice regimen until this week.

Perhaps nothing symbolized this better than the moment during Thursday’s media viewing period when Kirby yelled for freshman safety KJ Bolden, a former five star recruit, to move or risk being run over. Welcome to Athens, KJ.

Kirby Smart loves spring practice the way a chubby kid loves cake (former chubby kid here, can verify) in part because the schedule allows him to alternate intense practices with a day of physical rest and mental recuperation. There are no excuses for not giving 100%. In that respect these practices are his chance to teach the new guys The Georgia Way (tm).

A favorite spring pastime is of course handicapping which freshmen will earn playing time, and there are a ton of candidates so far. Cornerback Ellis Robinson, IV should be impossible to keep off the field. Young linebacker Justin Williams has the speed and ferocity to play early in the SEC. But perhaps the biggest surprise among the freshmen? Tight end Jaden Reddell. Specifically, his legs:

Early contender for biggest spring practice surprise: Jaden Reddell’s lower body development as a true freshman. https://t.co/kxnpfwk6Z5
— Dawg Sports (@dawgsports) March 15, 2024

With Pearce Spurlin giving up football due to medical issues true freshmen Reddell and Colton Heinrich join Stanford transfer Ben Yurosek in having an opportunity to see the field immediately. Yurosek, Oscar Delp, and Lawson Luckie give the Dawgs about as good a group for 13 personnel formations as exists in college football. But I’d recommend watching the tight ends this season if you want to see a competitive position group. That one’s going to be a fight for snaps from week to week.

Inside Out

Players switching positions is another perennial topic during spring practice. There hasn’t been a great deal of that this year, but as many expected defensive lineman Mykel Williams has been getting time at outside linebacker. Finding the right fit for Williams was a topic of conversation last season, to the point that some worried he might transfer if he didn’t get a shot at playing standing up.

To be fair the Columbus native was darned effective with his hand in the dirt, having been named second team All-SEC last season. But the 6’5, 260 pounder may well flourish in a role that allows him to stand and run in space, using his quickness and tangibles to full effect. Georgia too struggled sometimes when teams attacked outside the 5-technique in the run game last season. I wouldn’t mind seeing if Williams can’t help with that in his new role.

Also of note is that freshman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye was also seen on Thursday working with the outside linebackers. The 6’4, 270 pound Texan is a guy I’m very excited about in this class, though I don’t know that I see him staying outside. If he does however have the quickness to do that at his size, then I’m even more thrilled.

Getting To Know You….

It’s hard enough to get new players acclimated to your team. But this spring Kirby Smart is also integrating four new assistant coaches: Donte Williams (DBs), James Coley (WR), Josh Crawford (RBs) and Travaris Robinson (safeties). There’s obviously been a long process for these guys to get here. And Smart has known them (and in some cases worked with them) before. But if there’s any aspect of this team that gives me a little heartburn it’s the prospect of getting everyone on the same page from the word go.

Georgia faces perhaps one of the most punishing schedules in modern college football history in 2024, starting with a Clemson squad that will likely be ranked in the top 15. It has become fashionable for fans to bemoan the new expanded playoff because they like a world where “every game matters.” To those fans I would say “lose to Clemson in week one with road trips to Ole Miss, Bama, and Texas still on the schedule and you will have your wish.” There’s no breaking-in period on this fall’s schedule, That’s what makes this spring among the most critical of the Smart era. Until later…

Georgia gymnastics traveled to Ann Arbor last weekend to take on #7 Michigan, and while the GymDogs came up short in a 197.075-196.300 loss, there were once again some positive signs for the future of Courtney Kupets Carter’s young team.

Freshmen Holly Snyder (9.900) and Ady Wahl (9.925) each achieved season high scores on floor. Fellow frosh Lily Smith took home the event titles on bars (9.950) and in the all-around (39.500). Smith also matched her season-high score on floor with a spectacular 9.950 performance. In a remarkable show of consistency, five GymDogs tied for the high score of the night on beam with a 9.850. For anyone who saw the Dawgs struggle on beam over the past handful of seasons, that’s a huge win (even in a loss).

The #20-ranked GymDogs struggled in the first two rotations, posting a 48.650 on bars and a 48.950 on vault to fall behind the host Wolverines. Lily Smith was once again the high scorer of the night on bars with a 9.950. Ady Wahl led the team on vault with a 9.875, as the Dawgs struggled with the event away from Stegeman Coliseum once again.

In an away meet earlier this year against Kentucky the Red and Black struggled to right the ship after a poor start. But these young GymDogs appear to be maturing. They responded to the slow start by posting their highest away score on floor with a 49.450, led by Smith’s 9.950. Again, it was Smith who led the rotation with a 9.950 from the anchor spot.

The Classic City Canines then matched their highest away score on the beam with a 49.250. Jaydah Battle, Anya Turner, Lily Smith, and sophomores Naya Howard and JaFree Scott all posted 9.850s on the beam. The group split a seven-way tie for the event title with two Michigan gymnasts.

The 196.300 wasn’t a particularly high score, certainly below the solid 197.550 posted in the prior week’s home win over Auburn. But it was the Dawgs’ highest away score of the season, and will allow them to drop a lower away score (the 195.560 from that Kentucky meet in Rupp Atena) and improve their postseason seeding.

For her efforts Lily Smith was named SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week, the fourth time this season the Limerick, Pennsylvania native has been so honored.

The SEC Gymnastics Championships will take place beginning March 23rd in New Orleans. But first, Georgia heads to Nashville this weekend to compete at the Kidney Care Collegiate Challenge. The GymDogs will face Iowa, Maryland, Pittsburgh, and the Talladega Tornados on Saturday, March 16th.

Again, this GymDog team is unlikely to compete for the SEC or NCAA crowns in 2024. But there’a a palpable sense that things are trending in the right direction with the program after a series of tough, often disappointing seasons. If Coach Kupets Carter can keep her sterling freshmen in Athens next season, there’s a core group here that could absolutely be among the best in the nation very soon. I hope you find that as exciting as I do. Until later…

Diamond Dawgs now sit at 16-1 during the regular season

The Georgia Diamond Dawgs are coming off of another huge week of play as they are now running with an eight game win streak along with a 16-1 record as it is the best start to a season in modern Georgia baseball history and this team shows no signs of slowing down. The Dawgs kicked off their week with a 7-2 win over the Eagles of Georgia Southern on Tuesday along with an 11-5 beat-down over the Stetson Hatters on Wednesday. Georgia would resume series play on Friday as they settled in for a four game set against the Bears of Northern Colorado. The Dawgs would dominate all throughout this series as Georgia has shown that they are one of if not the best offenses in the country as the Dawgs launched thirteen total home runs, four of which were grand slams. Georgia would go on to outscore all opponents throughout the week by a combined score of 73-16. The Diamond Dawgs will pick play back up Tuesday as they will take on the Hawkeyes of Iowa at Foley Field with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. ET. Following that game, the Dawgs will pack up and head to Lexington, Kentucky as they will begin SEC play in a three game set against the Kentucky Wildcats.

The Georgia Bulldogs will return to the field this week after a 13-1 season that saw them win a dominating Orange Bowl victory, but fail to win their third consecutive national title.

It’s pretty hard to say that ending the year ranked #4 in the nation is a disappointment. But we’ve reached the stage in Kirby Smart’s dynasty build in Athens at which national championships are a realistic annual goal. In 2024 getting to that goal is going to require several Bulldogs to step up and step into the lineup, taking on more responsibility and/or performing at a higher level than in 2023. These are five whose performance I think may be most critical to the Dawgs’ 2024 fate.

5. Daylen Everette. Everette started every game of the 2023 season as a sophomore, replacing Kelee Ringo at corner. Playing opposite Kamari Lassiter in 2023 meant Everette was picked on some, but he responded well, especially down the stretch. Now with Lassiter turning pro Everette is now definitively The Guy at corner. That’s a huge responsibility, even with the likes of Malaki Starks behind him.

4. Travis Etienne. It feels a little odd to say that a guy who was second on his team in rushing in 2023 has a lot to prove in 2024. But Travis Etienne wasn’t the second-leading rusher on this Bulldog team.

Etienne went for 753 rushing yards and 172 receiving yards last year as a Florida Gator. He comes to Athens looking to replace steady senior performers Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton. Both rushed for more yardage in 2023 than Etienne and combined they accounted for 63% of the Red and Black’s rushing yards. Etienne will be looking to take snaps in a Bulldog backfield that will uncle a host of true freshmen and players looking to prove they can stay healthy. If he can seize the job of backfield workhorse, his decision to leave Gainesville could prove to be the best decision since, well, the last person who said to themselves “I gotta get the heck out of Gainesville.”

3. Jared Wilson. Georgia has been profoundly blessed over the past decade plus with multi-year, NFL-caliber starters at center. Sedrick Van Pran was just the latest, starting every single game of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons (44 games in total) on the way to being named First Team All-American by ESPN and Sports Illustrated this year.

That’s a tough, tough act to follow. Doing so looks to be the job of redshirt junior Jared Wilson. The 6’3, 310 pound North Carolinian played in 13 of 14 games in 2023 and is surrounded by experienced veterans like Tate Ratledge, Earnest Greene, and Xavier Truss. But the center is uniquely critical, and Wilson’s development will go a long way toward determining whether Georgia is again a title contender.

2. CJ Allen. It’s not that CJ Allen has to step up in 2023. It’s that Georgia desperately needs him not to take step back. After Jamon Dumas-Johnson went down with a broken arm Allen stepped in to start the final five games of the 2023 season. In the process he led all Bulldog freshmen with 41 tackles.

Now with Dumas-Johnson transferring to Kentucky Allen is the guy in the middle of the Dawgs’ linebacking corps. He’ll have help, with Smael Mondon, Raylen Wilson and Troy Bowles all back. But as Allen goes, so too may go this Bulldog defense.

Oscar Delp. You can’t replace a guy like Brock Bowers. The Napa Nightmare was arguably the most dominant tight end in college football over the past three seasons, and will go down as one of the most significant Bulldogs of the past two decades. He did things on the football field that a player with his size shouldn’t have been able to, and provided the UGA offense with a built-in mismatch every single week.

Oscar Delp is demonstrably no slouch himself. Delp started 10 games himself in 2013, and caught 24 passes for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns. Given the talent Geirgia brings back at receiver (and the transfer talent incoming) Georgia could be very good offensively even if Delp isn’t another Bowers. But deep down I suspect there will come a game in 2024 when the UGA offense needs him to be a Bowers-type mismatch.

Until later…

Tournament: Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard. March 7-10, 2024

Course: Bay Hill Club & Lodge, par 72, 7,466 yards. On the western edge of Orlando, FL, and a scant few miles from Orange Blossom Trail (IYKYK).

Purse: $20 million, with $4 million to the winner. This is the 4th Signature Event (of 8 this season). Thus elevated fields and elevated purses.

Defending Champ: Kurt Kitayama. The Runnin’ Reb from UNLV got out to a fast start, and held serve over the weekend as the rest of the pack came charging back at him.

Fun Fact: This is a Signature Event with only 70 odd players in the field. It is made up of the top 50 players from the previous season’s FedEx Cup, the current FedEx cup players from this season (not already qualified), the top 5 players between the Signature events (most recent, not already qualified), current season winners not already qualified, and world ranking top 30 not already qualified. The aim is to get the players who are hot, and have been playing the best golf over the last year or so. But somehow they get some sponsor’s exemptions. One of those this week is Webb Simpson. The Mary Broughton High School product (and seriously a Country Club kid of the highest degree) received an exemption. While Simpson had a good Tour career, and did capture the US Open a dozen years ago, he is the antithesis of “playing good golf right now”. But he’s also on the Players Advisory Council, a genuinely good guy, and now will get a guaranteed check. Draw your own conclusions.

TV Times: Thursday-Friday: 2-6 p.m. (Golf Channel), Saturday-Sunday: 12:30-2:30 p.m. (Golf Channel), 2:30-6 p.m. (NBC). The golf coverage will stay with NBC for the next month until CBS returns from March Madness.

‘Dawgs in the Field: 6. Sepp Straka, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk, Brendon Todd, Harris English, and Brian Harman.

Former Bulldog golfers have had a modicum of success on Arnie’s track, though no one has reached the winner’s circle. Harris English finished 2nd here last season, and 6 others made the cut. The year before, Kirk got a top 5 with another 6 playing the weekend. Kirk also had a top 10 in 2021, while Mitchell and Harris both got into the top 10 in 2020. The only other finish of note recently was Kevin Kisner’s 2nd place finish in 2017.

The course is always set up tough, the late winter winds always seem to blow, and there’s always enough water around to rinse some golf balls. It’s “similar” to PGA National (last week) in those regards, and the winning score will be somewhere around 10 under par in total. So not a birdie-fest, and players will test their shot-making: taking the wind into account for both shaping and distance. Those who can hit their approach shots on command usually come out on top. As proof of this concept, Tiger Woods won this tournament a record 8 times. He was the best iron player; exempli grati Tiger beat the field. A lot.

There’s a lot of things to draw one’s eyeballs these days, but if you want to see ‘Dawgs chasing little white balls in Central Florida, check out the API and root on our boys. And as always...

Condon wins NCBWA Player of the Month after incredible February

The Georgia Bulldogs’ star player Charlie Condon was named collegiate baseball player of the month for the month of February by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association earlier today. Condon put together an incredible February as he is off to an insane 2024 season, Condon hit for a whopping .639 along with crushing seven home runs and racking up thirteen RBIs this past month. The future first round pick’s season totals are now among the top in the country as he has garnered a .568 batting average and eight long balls through eleven games played as he hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

Dawgs continue to shine in clutch moments as it was a week full of adversity

The Georgia Diamond Dawgs are coming off another impressive week of play as they are coming off of a huge series sweep against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Game one of this series was suspended due to weather but the Dawgs have still been credited the win and sweep for the time being. The Dawgs faced adversity once again this week as they were handed their first loss of the season at the hands of the Michigan State Spartans. Though the loss was disappointing, Georgia got right back on track as the Dawgs rattled off back-to-back wins to kick off the following series against Georgia Tech as we really got to see what this team is made of as the Dawgs constantly battled and came from behind all series. The largest deficit the Dawgs faced was in last night’s game as they were down 9-3 going into the seventh against the Yellow Jackets as a series sweep started to look out of reach. That doubt would quickly be turned around in the top of seventh as Georgia’s bats came alive to put up five seventh inning runs to trim the Jackets’ lead to just 9-8. The score would stay locked at 9-8 going into the ninth and once again the Dawgs’ bats would come alive in the most clutch moments as Georgia put up 3 ninth inning runs as they would gain the lead and eventually clinch the series sweep by a final score of 11-9. Georgia now sits at 10-1 on the season as they will now gear up for the Eagles of Georgia Southern.
