Game Day Open Comment Thread and Honorary Game Captain
Happy new year! The first day of the 2008 calendar has arrived, but, more importantly, so has the last day of the Bulldogs' 2007 season. This is, of course, your game day open comment thread, so feel free to share your thoughts on the Sugar Bowl, the New Year's Day college football action, and the postseason generally in the comments below.
Naturally, this is also the time to declare today's Dawg Sports honorary game captain. I inadvertently foreshadowed this selection when mistakenly answering the final trivia question in my interview with NBC Sports, so it will not surprise you to learn that today's honorary captain is D.J. Shockley.

My reasons for selecting Shockley are twofold. First of all, as I noted when defending my aforementioned erroneous answer, Georgia's then-backup quarterback threw the 37-yard pass to Terrence Edwards that gave the Classic City Canines their only offensive touchdown in the Superdome on January 1, 2003 . . . the last time the 'Dawgs played in New Orleans and also the last time the Red and Black won the Sugar Bowl.
Secondly, Shockley's first game as the full-time starter under center was against a Western Athletic Conference squad with a potent offense. The Georgia quarterback completed 16 of his 24 pass attempts for 289 yards and five touchdowns while rushing five times for 85 yards and another score in a 48-13 rout.
The experts are expecting Hawaii to be this year's Boise State, and I hope they're right. It'd be nice to see a similar beatdown in the Crescent City tonight.
Go 'Dawgs!

yeah
this game is flat out awful. They're committing the worst sin possible with a big game.
It's boring.

About what I expected
My original prediction: 48-20. I'm halfway there, at least for the home team.

Fox News is reporting . . .
The last time Hawaii got shelled this badly, after all, we declared war on Japan.

Just kidding about my last comment
With eight minutes to go, I finally turned down the sound to prevent myself from throwing something at my television. These idiots from Fox get basic facts wrong, don't understand the rules of football, and go out of their way to criticize Georgia for playing well while defending the presence of a Hawaii team that obviously had no business being in the Big Easy for anything more prestigious than the New Orleans Bowl.
Tonight was a great night for the 'Dawgs, but the absolute incompetence and idiocy of an announcing crew whose opinions were ill-founded and whose command of the obvious was tenuous at best detracted from what should have been an absolutely splendid night.
The next time I criticize ESPN, someone remind me how genuinely awful the alternative is.
On the plus side . . . GO 'DAWGS! Right now, we ought to be the happiest fan base in all 49 states. (In case you hadn't heard, Hawaii is on the verge of being demoted back to territorial status.)

No kidding on FOX
Breaking away from an instant replay review without ever actually showing the replay?
Referring to Georgia as "The Gators" at the line of scrimmage?
AUGGH.
Davies' and Brennaman's color commentary about Hawai'i during the game wanted me to literally claw out my own eyes. Yes, we get it: they have a good offense...against Charleston Southern, Utah State, and UNLV.

Crazy like Fox's
But enough of all that. That was just the statement Georgia needed to make, and my only concern now is that it was so convincing Sports Illustrated might put the Bulldogs on the cover to begin the season and Corso will actually start picking Georgia on GameDay. We don't need jinxes like that.

i hate fox
The fact that I had to lead my post with a rant about the quality and heinousness of a broadcast is absolutely horrible.
Hats off to the team. Their intensity on defense was absolutely unmatched and off the top of my head i cannot remember such a dominating performance on defense by a UGA team. Marcus Howard was the first defensive Sugar Bowl Most Outstanding Player in 30 years.
Stafford and the offense didn't even have to think of any creative play calls all night. I could have subbed for Mike Bobo as OC tonight: iso, iso, counter sweep, toss weak, moreno for 6. Oh, did I mention with that play calling the offense scored 28 points.
What a season!!!

Congratulations ...
Outstanding destruction of a pretender. Great job helping us defend the honor of the SEC, and another great win for the Dawgs.
Again, congratulations, guys.
