Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The ESPN announcers, Pat Forde's column, and now The Red & Black (Forde and R&B links below) have all cited Georgia's 23-3 "true" road record in the SEC under Richt.  First, it's painful enough that we have to qualify this stellar record by excluding Jacksonville.  And with that out of the way...

If I'm not mistaken (hence the title of the diary), our record since the beginning of 2001 on SEC opponents' home fields is 19-3, including one loss in each of Lexington, Auburn, and Baton Rouge (and at least one win in every SEC stadium except the Swamp and Death Valley).  Our over-all record since 2001 on opponents' home fields is 23-3, but those 23 wins include one win at Clemson and three at Historic Grant Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Am I miscounting?  Or is ESPN crediting ACC losses to the SEC?

I think you're right...
They took one stat ("23-3 in opposing teams' stadiums"), and made it "in opposing SEC teams' stadiums", which is incorrect.  The team will only have four road games per year within the league.  So, for 2001-2006, the team could have only had 24 road contests.  They have one so far this year, totalling 25 SEC road contests possible under Mark Richt.  However, every other year, the Florida game is one of the team's "road" contests, taking away a true road game for three of those years... meaning UGA has only played 22 SEC road contests under Mark Richt.  They are 19-3 in those contests, but 23-3 overall in opposing teams' stadiums.

Thank you
Thanks for the confirmation.  I hate being picky (that's a lie), but I want to make sure Tech gets credit for losing.

That's it exactly
They're conflating Mark Richt's overall road record with his conference road record.

The breakdown is as follows:

2001: 4-0 (wins at Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Georgia Tech)
2002: 4-0 (wins at South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, and Auburn)
2003: 4-1 (wins at Clemson, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech; loss at L.S.U.)
2004: 3-1 (wins at South Carolina, Arkansas, and Kentucky; loss at Auburn)
2005: 4-0 (wins at Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech)
2006: 3-1 (wins at South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Auburn; loss at Kentucky)
2007: 1-0 (win at Alabama) . . . so far

The 2003 loss was to the eventual national champion. The 2004 loss was to an undefeated S.E.C. champion. The 2006 loss was to a Kentucky team that had begun what is now a run of nine wins in ten games. Not too shabby.
