Georgia Track & Field Update From N.C.A.A. Championships

Here are some highlights from the Bulldogs' second and third days of competition at the N.C.A.A. Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.:

  • Junior Natalie Picchetti and seniors Jill Steffens and Krista Woodward all advanced to the finals, with Steffens earning distinction as an all-American in the 10,000-meter run. 10,000 meters? Can that be right? I'm an American and I am neither a runner nor a scientist nor a drug dealer, so I've never actually used the metric system, but that sounds like a really long distance.
  • The Georgia men's 4x400-meter relay team, composed of sophomores Justin Gaymon and Michael Proctor and seniors Brian Etelman and David Dickens, finished second in their heat and clinched a spot in the finals by recording the fourth-fastest time in school history.
  • Naturally, I saved the best for last, as hammer hurler extraordinaire Jennifer Dahlgren captured her second straight national championship in the final meet of her collegiate career. By winning in the hammer throw event, eight-time all-American Dahlgren not only claimed her third individual N.C.A.A. title, she also put the Georgia women's team in the overall lead. Despite being on the opposite edge of the North American continent from the University of Georgia campus, the holder of the hammer throw record for the South American continent praised the crowd for its contribution:
The crowd, especially our crew from Georgia, was great today.

Dahlgren's winning throw went 232 feet---that's over 77 yards, folks!---and broke the N.C.A.A. meet record set by Candice Scott in 2004. Scott, it should be noted, was a Florida Gator. Ha! In your face, second place!

This evening's and tomorrow afternoon's events will be televised live, so tune in to watch . . . and, while you're at it, vote for me!

Go 'Dawgs!

Track and Field
10,000 meters is 6.2 miles or 25 laps around a standard track.
