S.E.C.'s Top Athletic Program Claims Latest National Title

As NCT already noted, the Georgia men's tennis team completed its undefeated season with a 4-0 win over Illinois in the N.C.A.A. finals.

The Bulldogs arrived at the championship match by beating Florida and claimed the program's fifth national title by defeating a team clad in orange and blue, which is always nice.

In other words, all's right with the world. Our congratulations go out to the Georgia men's tennis team on bringing home the N.C.A.A. championship.

Go 'Dawgs!

You know...
You don't have to give me credit for noting such a thing.  It's easier to snap a quick comment about such a development than to compose even a brief post marking the occasion of (yet another) national championship.

But man, I've enjoyed watching these matches even on the javascript live scoreboard.  It's exciting stuff.  I missed the men's final because I actually had to summarize and report to clients two depositions I took yesterday after a meeting this morning courting another potential client.  Real life gets in the way, dammit.  I hope these people realize the sacrifices I make to provide legal services.

and re UCLA women's team
Don't we have to cheer on the Bruins since one of their team members is Elizabeth Lumpkin?

Congrats!
Oh, Manuel- could he be Georgia's second best coach after Yoc?

Sweet. Vengance For Last Year
Yay, us.  Well not that I was included, but you know what I mean.

Very happy for the players who went 30-o last year only to lose in the final to Pepperdine.  Damn 62-1 over 2 seasons is pretty impressive.

Thanks for keeping up with the Olympic sports as well, Mayor.

Top athletic program in the SEC?

UF just reclaimed the SEC all-sports trophy for the 15th time in the past 16 years (the Gators lost the trophy to UGA last year for the first time since 1990-1991), and swept men's and women's sports this year as well, for good measure.  They're also the highest ranked SEC school in the NCAA Director's Cup.  Georgia has done well this year, but it's not the league's best athletic program according to outside observers.

The Directors' Cup . . .
. . . is a poor gauge of excellence because (as I have pointed out before) it awards points for each sport in which a university fields a team.

Florida, which fields 18 varsity sports teams, routinely outpoints Georgia, which fields 16 varsity sports teams, because the Gators get additional points for the two extra sports. This indicates only that Florida is doing more, not that Florida is doing it better.

Besides, all that is old news. The fading Gators clearly have hit a slump, as their national championship drought dates all the way back to early April. Since Florida completed its gaudy sweep of the revenue sports, Georgia has claimed national championships in women's gymnastics and in men's tennis. Both times, the Red and Black beat the Orange and Blue head-to-head in the N.C.A.A. tournament.

The Gators' three national titles in 366 days genuinely represented an impressive achievement, but does anyone seriously doubt that the Florida program hit its high water mark with that accomplishment? Some regression is inevitable and this is evident in the Gators' subsequent elimination in tournament play in other sports.

Finally, if you don't buy any of that, consider the words Leo McGarry spoke to Jed Bartlet in the first part of the classic "West Wing" episode "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen":

"Act as if ye have faith and faith shall be given to you." Put it another way, fake it 'til you make it.

Florida had a nice run, but every 'Dawg has its day.

Director's Cup standings
Stay tuned for the inclusion of the spring sports.  UGA stands to gain some ground once tennis, golf, and T&F results are determined and tallied.

For now, it's enough that UGA has one more NCAA championship in 2006-2007 than UF, and I like UGA's chances of adding another (or two) better than Florida's.
