Which Was the Worst Loss of the 2007 College Football Season?

I apologize profusely for the light posting this evening, but I have been hampered by temporary technical difficulties. Fortunately, the diaries have been an active place of late, which is a good thing, so check 'em out and feel free to add one of your own.

In the meantime, the time has come to report on the results of the vote on the most recent Dawg Sports poll question; viz., "Which was the most embarrassing loss of the college football season?" Of the available contenders, Appalachian State's win over Michigan garnered the most votes, finishing first on 133 of the 251 ballots cast (53.0%).

In the Wolverines' defense, the Mountaineers are 10-2 and just advanced to the second round of the Division I-AA playoffs.

The Crimson Tide faithful will be comforted to know that a comparatively paltry 83 voters (33.1%) deemed Alabama's loss to Louisiana-Monroe the season's most shameful setback, while Southern California fans will be relieved to learn that only 35 ballots (13.9%) were cast for the proposition that the Trojans' defeat at the hands of lowly Stanford constituted the campaign's most embarrassing outcome. (By the way, the line of the year regarding the Cardinal was this: "Well, of course, Stanford had the most difficult schedule in the country. They did not have to play Stanford.")

Under the circumstances, the new poll question is as obvious as it is intriguing: "Which of the B.C.S. bowls would you most like to see Georgia attend?" Would you prefer the history and pageantry of the Granddaddy of 'Em All, the oldest existing bowl that the 'Dawgs have never won, or the site of the first bowl Georgia ever attended?

Your votes go here. I'll be back with more tomorrow.

Go 'Dawgs!

It's not even close
12 to nothing for the Rose Bowl at the moment --  a unanimous jury verdict for the Rose Bowl.  I know I'd love to go to visit Pasadena again, and if the  Dawgs are invited to the Rose Bowl I will.

Even better would be a match with the University of Spoiled Children.  If the Dawgs win such a game I believe they'll be the preseason number one for 2008.  And given the irrationality of the BCS methodology and contributing polls, the psychology of starting the season in first place could be an important factor in a potential national championship run.

Irrational exuberance
Starting at number 1 is of limited benefit - it's extraordinarily hard to stay at number 1 wire to wire, and perforce you have only one other way to go. USC went wire to wire as #1 in 2005 and we all know how well that ended; likewise with this year's pre-season number 1 ranking.

I would agree that a top 10 ranking certainly keeps a team within the psychological range of being in the National Championship game, but ultimately you've got to win out... well, except this year apparently.

As for a Rose Bowl involving USC and Georgia, I think that would make for pretty compelling viewing. However, you might need to put that tired "spoiled children" joke out to pasture - there are certainly some seriously wealthy undergrads, but many many more like my friends, whose parents had jobs like high school teacher, electrical engineer, suit salesman, bank branch manager, partner at Arthur Anderson... okay, maybe that last one isn't such a great example.

Re: "spoiled children"
Yeah, I'm not sure how anyone who's spent a significant amount of time on UGA's campus can use this kind of talk. "Tell you what, hon. If you take the HOPE scholarship and go to UGA, Daddy will take some of the money he saves off of Duke tuition and get you a new 325 to replace the hand-me-down Volvo wagon we've been making you drive."

to your point...
the friend whose father was an Anderson partner wrecked the hand-me-down Volvo wagon his senior year in prep school. No surprise that he was carless in college, I think.

You must have inferred
... I was referring to the University of Southern California.  I can't imagine why anyone would infer such a thing.  USC may once have been known as such, but it has now earned the more appropriate sobriquet "University of Second Choice".

I take exception to that
USC has been the University of Second Choice for at least as long as it has been the University of Spoiled Children - it's not a recently earned distinction. Rather like the reputation of Cal's extension campus in Westwood as the sanitized upper-middle-class enclave for those who couldn't hack Bezerkely.

Bezerkley!
Think they'll win the Big Game this year? I think Stanford scores another upset regardless of who's running the offense.

Stanford
The upset against USC was one thing - it would be churlish to begrudge them taking their chances and winning - but losing to Notre Dame? The Tree is dead to me. Go Bears!

"hand-me-down Volvo wagon"
Oh, the humanity!

Actually, I don't really care which BCS Bowl we go to as long as we win. I am just glad we won't be going to the Outback Bowl with that mercilessly early start.

Indeed!
Fotodog has hit the nail on the head. I would love to go to the Rose Bowl and play USC, but whichever bowl we go to please make it one that has a late start time. Its New Year's Day for God's sake!
