Game Day Open Comment Thread and Honorary Captain

It's going to be a fairly "no frills" game day open comment thread today, but that's O.K., because you know the drill. Your thoughts, reflections, and observations on Georgia's game with Vanderbilt and the other college football action around the country go in the comments below.

Today's honorary game captain was an easy choice. Against the Commodores in 1980, he carried the ball 23 times for 283 yards (12.3 yards per carry), three touchdowns, and ten first downs. Seven of his scampers went for more than ten yards, including a 60-yarder. Let's hope Knowshon Moreno has as good a day---heck, I'd be happy if he had half as good a day---against Vandy tonight as this guy had in his freshman season:

Go 'Dawgs!

OK St. is a man. 40.
Well let's not crown them but, Nebraska looks horrible.  Fans leaving with minutes left in the SECOND quarter.

Useless Information
With apologies to Kyle, this UGA team makes stats irrelevant. Teams that don't have good running stats, come in an run all over us, teams that don't stop the run, shut us down.
We had just be thankful that Bama screwed themselves against us by not sticking with the run.

This just sucks 17-7.

late is better than nothing
They didn't show up until into the 2nd half, but it was nice to see the defense finally arrive and play somewhat like what is expected of a Dogs' defense.

Moreno is a beast!!!

yeah, but...
Let's not forget how far downfield Vandy got on their last drive before they fumbled. Until the ball hit the ground, the Dawgs were yet again letting the opponent's offense move at will when the game was on the line. I'm happy for the win and that the division losing streak is over, but if the defense plays like this in two weeks...oy.

Fumble
We needed Vandy to fumble at the 8, then we needed to recover our own fumble, to win that game. Against Vanderbilt. I, for one, do not take anything from this game except a strang mixture of pride and shame that we've finally defeated an SEC east opponent. This is a game we should always win - we did, so now let's forget it and move on.

I agree about Moreno. Please, please, don't get hurt.

I'll take the win
I almost don't know how to feel.  Sure, I'm Hap-Hap-Happy we won, but we still can't knock 'em out on defense late, can we?

Interesting end to the game, game-winning field goal aside.  I'm glad Richt got pissed.  Hope that fire stays with us for the next few weeks heading into Jax.

If ever a team needed a week off...this is it.

Agreed
The best part of it was seeing some fire from the coaching staff.

The commentators remarked on how Willie Martinez was losing his temper, shouting, having to be held back, and getting up in guys' faces.

When the players started jumping up and down at midfield, Mark Richt angrily ran out and started yelling at guys and pushing them off of the Vandy logo. I liked it because it was a classy move, but I liked seeing the coaches get emotional about the players' poor play.

It is a concern, to put it mildly, that we let the Commodores drive the length of the field, but the defense forced the fumble (rather than getting a gift from an inept offense like they did against Ole Miss) and the offense capitalized.

The play-calling, execution, and clock management on the game-winning drive were as good as we've seen in a while. Knowshon Moreno, in particular, twice made the prudent decision to get out of bounds to preserve the time outs, all three of which the 'Dawgs had to start the drive.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a win and a dramatic come-from-behind victory on the road---even against Vanderbilt, which, by the way, still sits at .500, so it isn't as though they're terrible---may give this team the shot in the arm they need heading into an off week, during which (hopefully) fires can be stoked, injuries can heal up, and adjustments can be made.

If there is one lesson that this season has taught us, it is that any team can beat any other team on any given Saturday.

P.S.: I told you Kentucky would beat L.S.U.!

end of the game and thoughts on martinez
When ESPN interviewed richt after the game and said that was the first time we had celebrated in that inappropriate fashion on someone elses field was 2001.  Was that against UT?  That's the only game i could think of.

Im watching the Auburn Arkansas game right now (6-0 AU in the fourth quarter) and Will Muschamp looks like BVG at UGA from seasons past.  After Auburn forced a three and out, the cameras showed muschamp halfway out on the field high fiving his players and screaming at them and some microphones picked up some profanity accidently.  I love it.

I agree with you Kyle, it was nice to see some evidence of emotion from both richt and martinez but it is absolutely deplorable that we allowed VANDY to move the ball down our throats with a tie game on the line late in the 4th.

Other thoughts include: Knowshon 4 Heisman 2008.....very depressing to see Lump sitting on the bench with a jacket on, head down after getting injured. just seems that he can never stay completely healthy for a period of time....I appreciate our attempt to throw the ball so much but Stafford needs to become a way more efficient passer.  Nothing Brady or Manning esque but his play is either way hot or way cold (see last season until final three games).  As a sophomore and a former 5-star QB from TX he needs to start stepping up his game.  Sean Bailey and MoMass may not be Fred Gibson, Terrence Edwards, or Reggie Brown but i can't understand why Stafford looks so great one moment and then not so great a short time later.

Maybe im over analyzing this but our future schedule against the likes of UF, Troy, UK (just beat #1 in nation), Auburn, and tech does not look great.

Glad for the win, but...
The same theme is running through the comments - our defense is letting the opponent's offense move down the field.  Thank goodness for Vandy's fumble, or we probably would have lost our 7th sec east game - not acceptable.  Again, I am so happy for the win, but our defense has not looked good under Martinez!!!  Remember how good we were under Vangorda??!!!  How long will this continue?  Also, how many feel our play calling is TOO PREDICTABLE????

more stuff
Dumbest QB of the year award goes to.....Cal QB. Wow. Just wow.  No words for that situation.

Anyway, another thing i forgot to say earlier i was glad to see Coutu step up and finally nail his first career game winning FG.  Just wish he could get some more distance on his kick offs so we could get better coverage down field but im just nit picking.
