An Offer You Can't Refuse

Here at SportsBlogs Nation, we like to encourage a sense of community. We pose poll questions, post open comment threads, and invite readers to contribute diaries because we believe it is important for webloggers to engage in dialogue and debate with their readers rather than take part in the sorts of one-sided conversations in which interaction is sorely lacking that we find at mainstream news media outlets.

While civil exchanges always are encouraged here at Dawg Sports, some days seem especially well-suited to the solicitation of reader contributions. Just as Don Vito Corleone felt honor-bound to accede to requests made of him on his daughter's wedding day, so, too, do I feel especially inclined to heed reasonable reader recommendations offered on any weekend on which an unranked Georgia squad hangs a 37-15 whipping on a fifth-ranked Auburn team on the Plains.

This degree of deference is strictly optional here at Dawg Sports, however.

Fire away, gentle readers. What's on your mind? What are we doing well here at Dawg Sports and what can we do better? What are you seeing here too often, what are you seeing here too rarely, and what are you seeing here just frequently enough? (I know, some of you don't get the whole Kristin Davis thing, but I'll be keeping her around for the benefit of those of you who do.)

It is open mike night, Bulldog Nation . . . and my mood could not be better, so this is an outstanding opportunity for you to offer constructive criticisms with the certitude that honest feedback will be given a fair hearing.

Let me know what you're thinking.

Go 'Dawgs!

Matt, take a look at Kristin and tell me she's not beautiful... you're lying.

Kyle, I think you do a wonderful job, to be honest I wonder how you have the time to post and research as much as you do.

How 'bout them Dogs!

Great to be a Georgia Bulldog.
Yesterday's visit to the loveliest village (who dubbed it this - the lack of trees is disturbing)was very enjoyable. Good food, good friends, pretty girls, cold beer, and a fine performance by our Dagws. I think this is what we've been expecting all year. Other than the fumbles, Matt was excellent. I dare anyone to say they would have held on the one of those - a bone-jarring hit.

Ditto Lumpkin. Ditto play calling - nice mix. Ditto defense.

Only negative is the trash talking and show boating of some of our guys - especially Battle and Johnson. Battle's show boating led directly to an Auburn TD and could have changed the momentum of the game. I hope Coach Richt addresses this.

All in all, a fine day.

by Elmo Lewis on Nov 12, 2006 8:25 AM EST   0 recs

Lets give some credit...
While I don't condone trash talking and subscribe to the "Let your play tell the story", ya gotta admit these guys deserved to blow off some steam.  They beat a top 5 team, BCS Title game contender, and an old rival... at there place!  Not to mention, Cox instigated a fair amount.  How he never got a flag and when he did it was offsetting, is beyond me.

Hey, WE have been trash talkin the UGA team all year since Tenn.  They deserve a chance to vent.  Hey, if Battle picks off three a game, dive in the end zone each time, I don't care!  I didn't see any Florida State/Miami kinda crap, just some guys celebrating and not letting an overrated INT machine get in their face.

Let's rest up and squish some yellow jackets in two weeks!

by ssidedawg1 on Nov 12, 2006 9:56 AM EST   0 recs

I'm with you there, ssidedawg
It's called the excessive celebration penalty for the same reason it's called unreasonable search and seizure . . . searches and seizures are allowed, as long as they're reasonable, and celebration is permitted, as long as it's within certain boundaries.

Choreographed end zone dances and taunting are inappropriate because the former are premeditated and the latter are unsportsmanlike. Organic celebratory acts, however, are a natural part of what is, after all, a game of emotion. I jumped up and pumped my fist in the air when Tra Battle reached the end zone; why shouldn't he be allowed to get airborne at the same moment? He earned it.

Whether a celebration is excessive is, by definition, situational. (This is why I think the penalty against Vanderbilt at the end of regulation against Florida last year was absurd. If you're a Vanderbilt player and you've just scored the touchdown that is about to give your team its first win over the Gators in Gainesville not only in your lifetime, but in your parents' lifetimes and maybe even in your grandparents' lifetimes, there's very little you can do short of throat-slashing or break-dancing that could be called "excessive" under the circumstances.)

When you've just picked off a pass to score the touchdown that signals that the rout is on in a game your unranked team wasn't supposed to win against a top-five team in a rivalry game on the road, diving into the end zone may be showboating, but it's an understandable expression of joy rather than an effort to rub the opponent's nose in it. (If Georgia was the sort of team that rubbed it in, Mark Richt would have gone for the touchdown at the end instead of taking a knee even though he couldn't run out the clock completely.)

That said, Elmo is right . . . if you know the refs are going to call it, you have to know better than to do it. Whether the refs ought to call it is something to be addressed in the offseason, but, when you know the rules, it's foolish to break them when you know your team is going to be penalized. Get the W, then go crazy.

open mic criticism
Before I get to the purpose of the post (responsive to the invitation in this particular entry), I want to say that it's frustrating watching these games on television.  I drink too much coffee every morning, anyway, and the first half of yesterday's game had me pacing in a vain effort to expend adrenalin.  My heart rate didn't ease up until well into the fourth quarter.  It'll be good to be back in Athens in a couple of weeks.

Kyle, I dig your blog, and yesterday's game has me in a generous mood.  I'm a life-long college football fan, but I don't know enough about it to offer any critique of your analyses of games and programs.  I know a lot about words, though, and your posts are entertaining and informative.  Granted, much of my appreciation is based on subjective opinion, but objectively, it means a lot that you start out with appropriate spelling and sentence structure (all too rare these days -- you know what I'm talking about: open any AJC edition and find who-whom abuse, for example).

Beyond that, the literary and pop culture references are outstanding; you do our alma mater proud: keep it up.  To borrow a point of reference from my brother (made regarding someone else), the ample smatterings of allusions, both esoteric and exoteric, remind me a bit of Dennis Miller before he became an a$$hole.

And while I'm at it (I swear, I haven't felt this kind of lasting giddiness since the 2002 Tech game), your readers' comments are a welcome and refreshing alternative to the tripe one often finds from UGA fans elsewhere.  Kudos for hosting a forum that embraces us who have a love for the school, its sports programs, and our shared history.  Your penchant for putting things in the broad perspective appeals to my own perspective (which enjoys a legacy inherited from my parents, classes of '57/'60 and '59 - particularly from my father, who worked for the Sports Information Department).

Go Dogs!
and
To hell with Tech!

Much obliged
That's exactly what I'm aiming for, NCT, so it's good to know I'm not veering too far from the mark.

Feeling the Love.
I just love everybody right now.  I'm so full of good feelings, happiness and joy. I love you, Kyle.  I love you, NCT.  I love you Elmo and fotodog.  Ssidedawg, do you feel the love?  I love everyone who has posted before and who will post after.  Love, Love, Love!

I hate Auburn.

Perhaps a weekly feature...
...about your favorite parts of Notre Dame?  One week make it the dome, the next Brady, and so on and so forth...

Congrats on the win, Bulldog Nation.

I'm all about the love for Notre Dame . . .
. . . after we beat Auburn.

C-Dub, you and I fall on opposite sides of the Notre Dame divide and, due to the unique position the Fighting Irish occupy in the sport, I don't believe any college football fan truly can be neutral where the squad from South Bend is concerned. You either have to love the Golden Domers or hate them, in a way you aren't really required to love or hate, say, L.S.U. or Oklahoma or U.C.L.A.

That having been said, as much as I dislike the fact that the news media have a knee-jerk predisposition in favor of the Irish, the truth is that Notre Dame is a fine university with an extraordinary college football tradition and Charlie Weis is a good guy doing a good job of coaching an outstanding team. I hate Notre Dame conceptually, but I don't dislike any particular person affiliated with Notre Dame individually.

On the other hand, I hate Auburn. I hate their coaches, I hate their college (sic.), I hate their nicknames, I hate their history, I hate their fans, I hate their band . . . I hate everything about them. I hate Notre Dame in the abstract, but my hatred of Auburn is specific, perennial, diurnal, and eternal. If Auburn played Notre Dame, I would root for Notre Dame.

In the spirit of goodwill and universal brotherhood that accompanies a Georgia win over Auburn, CW, I will do my best to show Notre Dame the love and friendship to which all institutions, ideas, and living things are entitled purely by virtue of the fact that they are not Auburn.

by T Kyle King on Nov 12, 2006 1:06 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

...favorite parts of Notre Dame?
I realize the question is for Kyle, but as for me, my favorite parts of Notre Dame are from history: 11/08/1980 and 01/01/1981.

And how many movies about Notre Dame feature the Irish beating Tech?  I like that, too.

by NCT on Nov 12, 2006 12:41 PM EST   0 recs

Just a quick thought...
...and I may be totally off base here.  I try to read the weblog each morning.  I love that Kyle is better informed than anyone else in the Nation.  When news breaks, it is reported first by Dawg Sports (that includes the respective passings of Randy Walker and Erk Russell, and as recently as the selection of the OSU Cowboys to play the Dawgs next September.  Living in Dallas, I rely on Kyle's timely reporting for the news in the Classic City.  That said, however, a lot of times the postings refer to numerous other postings on this and othe weblogs.  You run dangerously close to overwheming your reader when they feel that they must read twelve other weblogs and news sites just to understand the context of this mornings current posting.

This is a nit-picky complaint, though, as I am certain that this is among the best weblogs in the Sports Nation.  Keep up the good work.

All my best to you, Susan, and Thomas, by the way.

Your Tejano Hermano,
CT

by Tiller on Nov 12, 2006 1:02 PM EST   0 recs

That's a fair criticism, Chad
I probably make the unconscious assumption that everyone who reads Dawg Sports also reads several other Bulldog weblogs (Paul Westerdawg, Doug Gillett, Gunslingers, The Cover Two, etc.) and various of the SportsBlogs Nation college weblogs, as well. Since most of you have day jobs, this may not be a safe assumption.

What would be a nice compromise? When linking and/or referring to other weblogs, should I provide a short precis or brief excerpt from the posting being quoted, so that the reader can get the gist of it even if he has not read it in its entirety?

Much like William Faulkner in his novels or Kevin Smith in his movies, I'd like to be able to reward those who delve into what I am writing in depth without punishing or excluding those whose time is more limited than they would like. Is that a workable solution?

I hope all is well with you and yours, as well.

weblog links
For what it's worth, I appreciate the density of the links, although the sense that getting ever single "back story" is mandatory takes me back to 1st-year Torts with Sentell.

more reece?
Kyle, you run a great blog here.  I showed up to see your take on the SC/UGA game, and I've found myself coming back fairly often.  The amount of posting and information that the posts contain is impressive, and it is hard to see how you can keep a day job.  I've found that the insights you have and thought provoking questions that you raise help me understand college football better and for that alone, your site is great.  It also doesn't hurt that the pics of ladies aren't too bad on the eyes either.

Great win over the weekend, by the way, and based on that, I think you should take your bowl bid.  And does this mean we'll see more of Reece in the future?

Thanks, Robert
I've said this before, but it bears repeating that you singlehandedly have done more to improve my opinion of the Gamecock fan base than any other South Carolina fan I have ever met.

Thanks for the kind comments. You'd better believe that Reese Witherspoon will remain the official Dawg Sports game day open comment thread good luck gal as long as the 'Dawgs keep winning!

I was pulling for South Carolina in the Swamp yesterday. Y'all almost pulled that one out and, if the 'Cocks had beaten the Gators, you'd better believe FireUrbanMeyer.com would be up and running right now!

Others receiving votes
I know it is a sad fact, Georgia didn't crack the top 25 but we did (drum roll please) get to the "Others Receiving Votes" category. Baby steps, baby steps.  With a win over Tech and a Bowl win, we won't have what we all want, but we got an outside shot at a Top 20.  I know, I know, one step at a time.

Gotta get the MO back for next year's team!

On hating Auburn
Kyle another post suggestion: Are Auburn and Clemson the same schools?
  1. Both schools are Ag/Tech schools for their respective states.
  2. Both are located off I-85 (Clemson just a bit farther).
  3. Both are in small towns in the middle of nowhere.
  4. Both schools feature a clock tower that looks almost exactly like the other school's clock tower.
  5. Both schools have orange as one of their colors.
  6. Both schools have a Tiger as their mascot.
  7. Both schools have enjoyed a rivalry with the Dogs.
  8. Even "Wingnut" and Lil'Bowden look a bit alike.
Feel free to add more.

by fotodog on Nov 12, 2006 7:50 PM EST   0 recs

9. Both were coached by John Heisman . . .
. . . which accounts for the similar color schemes (orange and purple are a variation on orange and dark blue) and the identical feline mascots, because the namesake of college football's most overrated award carried many Auburn traditions with him from the so-called Loveliest Village to Lake Hartwell.

by T Kyle King on Nov 12, 2006 8:17 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

fact-check
Construction on Hartwell Dam didn't begin until 1955, per the Corps of Engineer's website.

My bad
I was trying to be lyrical rather than literal; I should've gone with "Fort Hill" instead of "Lake Hartwell."

Auburn/Clemson
I must chide my good friend Kyle King for failing to take this opportunity to remind the Bulldog Nation of the late Lewis Grizzard's description of Clemson University, to wit:  "Auburn with a lake."

For the record, I also hate Auburn.

Since you asked...
Dawgsports is a tremendous resource for a dawg fan. There are certainly nits to pick, but overall this is a great blog.  That said:

The potential to increase the readership for this blog is limited by the fact that it is written about 13 grade levels above the reading level comprehension of your average dawg fan.  They must look at the pictures and think this blog is about Kristin Davis. Just saying. I like it, but most dawg fans....

What else?  Well, you write too much.  Slow it down a little. Dawgsports is to dawg talk as speed dating is to romance.  I believe you would foster a stronger sense of community if you wrote less often and allowed more time for interaction with your audience before moving on to the next topic of discussion.

And maybe some pictures of UGA alum from time to time.  And not pictures of you, or Lewis Grizzard, or anyone who can grow facial hair.

This may be the best Dawg Blog Ever
Please, Please do not make any changes to you posting rate or the level of aptitude that may/may not be required to enjoy this blog. Any true Dawg fan would not assert that this blog is out of the grasp of those in the Bulldawg Nation's collective reading ability. While well intentioned, the fan that posted this comment is doing the Nation a disservice to imply that the "average fan" cannot relate to you brand of wit and writing ability. As a recent (class of 2006) grad, this disturbs me and can only re-affirm those fans of the North Ave Trade school that our school's culture is not of a comparable intellectual standard. Frankly it offends me and my degree.

Please do not stop posting frequently as the posting is at a rate that is ideal. Twice a day posting gives people time to catch up and enough information to not be bored. With less frequent posting, you will risk of losing people be giving the impression that they won't have the ability to be entertained daily with new info and opinion. Other blogs such as Doug's and the Cover Two are following a less frequent posting time and there fans with the need for a slower rate of posting can feel free to add their comments there.

I love this blog and the fact that I read your very high quality and volume of material. It simply never gets old, and it satisfies my need for the higher-brow humor and insight. I also would inform those that need a lower level of reading/writing comprehension go to EDSBS, which I where I go directly after reading this blog to satisfy my cravings for shock humor.

Keep up the good work, graduates of the University won't feel that you are writing over their heads.
