Mark Twain on UGA Football

"There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics": I will bypass the first two categories and focus on the third. Silently and against the 35th most difficult schedule in the nation, the UGA Defense has become the bragging point of this season. Currently the Junkyard Dawgs are ranked 9th in Total Defense, 13th in Scoring, 46th in Rushing and 2nd in Passing Defense. Considering how the Offensive Unit has consistently thrown the D under the bus, that is not bad. Currently the UGA offense is very offensive. 83rd in Total Offense, 76th in Scoring, 35th in Rushing, 104th in Passing. Comparing the Offense and Defense by those stats alone is kinda like looking at a Pineapple and comparing it to a Granny Smith Apple. Not related in anyway. But when you look at the fact that the Offense is currently 81st in Time of Possession, 119th in 3rd Down Conversion, 86th in 4th Down Conversion and 99th in the Red Zone (the Defense is currently 11th in Opponent 3rd Down, 51st in Opponent 4th Down and 3rd in Opponent Red Zone, btw); it pulls together that the Offensive Unit is not scoring, not giving the Defense time to catch its breath and generally relying on the Defensive to flip the field. Now if you are into believing rumors, many of us think that the mastermind behind this Defense will not be allowed back on the sidelines in Athens next season,....Does that make sense?

"The secret about getting ahead is getting started": We have seen the rocking buses before a game. We have seen all the hype videos, but it most often seems to never make it onto the field. All too often UGA has not shown up on the biggest stages. I will not go into all the games where UGA was clearly the superior, but due to a lack of want were reduced to embarrassed by the score board. Why cannot the coaching staff inspire the team to play 100% from the first kick off to the end of the game?

"If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.": I do not envy the responsibility that the President has this offseason. First off there is huge dissatisfaction within the fan base with the current coaching staff, a huge rift in the coaching staff, and what some to see as the failure of the AD to really endorse UGA athletics (decline in the Athletic Department as a whole over the past 5 years). There are a lot of frogs on the plates of the powers that be at UGA. Does the program need a new AD, a new Head Football Coach, a new Offensive Coordinator, a calmer Defensive Coordinator, a new baseball stadium, a new basketball arena...I mean the list goes on. I hope that he has a large appetite, cause the frogs are piling on.

"Climate is what we expect. Weather is what we get": Every season UGA is vaulted into SEC East Championship, SEC Championship and National Championship talk. It is what is expected. One of the premier College Football Programs in the country. Great recruiting classes, large supportive fan base (or their wallets), a reloading not re-building attitude. What we end up with is 6 SEC East Championships (2 of those shared), 2 SEC Championships (ZERO in a decade), and ZERO National Championships in the past 14 years and this is with 14 years of TOP 15 recruiting classes in the nation. Might be time to change the climate, or force the weather to change. What will we settle for?
