NCAA Tennis Tourney: WTEN Dawgs Fall in Quarters

UGA’s #1-seeded women’s tennis team fell 4-1 to Florida in the NCAA round of 16 in Athens on Saturday. A few notes:

  1. Another great weather day (after a cloudy start). Another big, noisy crowd supporting the WTEN Dawgs.

  2. The match was oddly similar to the MTEN Dawgs’ loss on Friday. Unexpectedly dropped the doubles point. Came out strong in singles on 5 courts. But the Gators kept chipping away. Again, our Dawgs never stopped fighting, but they came up a little short.

  3. Still, a great year for the WTEN Dawgs. Yesterday was the last (team) appearance for three great seniors – Maho Kowase, Kate Fuller, and Lilly Kimbell. All 3 had long, productive careers for the Dawgs. They will all be missed.

  4. All the higher ranked seeds in the women’s quarterfinals lost. Women’s semis are now set for Monday at 1: Florida-UCLA and Stanford-UNC.

  5. Men’s quarters today will be disrupted a bit by rain. In the early action, UVA-Baylor now headed to Atlanta to play at Tech’s indoor facility. USC –Texas will play here in Athens indoors. Location of later matches (OSU-UCLA and UNC-Oklahoma) will be determined later.

  6. Both sets of Dawgs are now out of the team tourneys, but several Dawgs will begin individual play (in singles and doubles) on Wednesday.
