Just a few days after dragging Greg McGarity over the coals for the refusal to open up the Scrooge McDuck bank vault and hire "advisors" for the football program and linking that to his earlier refusals to give the Diamond Dogs a decent place to play, or the Basketball team a better facility; today it was announced that renovations to Foley Field will begin at the conclusion of this upcoming season and approximately 12 million would be spent. Completion is expected before the start of the 2015 season.
Seth Emerson writes that even though the 5 million in private funds has not been raised McGarity says that the fund raising efforts have yielded enough that he is comfortable enough to proceed with the changes. Thursday McGarity requested the Board to approve and they consented unanimously.
McGarity also requested $700,000 to be approved for improvements to the swimming and diving locker rooms, which met with dissent from the Board. One member felt that the small improvement was not enough and that thought was echoed by a member of the team, stating "the pool itself is gorgeous. the other stuff is lacking." McGarity said that the issue would be considered further.
$500,000 was asked for to upgrade the Stegeman Coliseum office spaces and the Board was also asked to approve new Uniforms for the Red Coat Marching Band. The current uniforms are 10 years old and 500 new uniforms would cost $225,000 ($450 per).
So there we have it Dawg Fans...$8,425,000 dollars for the benefit of UGA Athletics.
