Georgia may have found a key piece to improving their future fortunes in the defensive backfield when Brooks County's (Quitman, GA) Malkom Parrish committed to the Dawgs back in June. Another early commit = another favorite Dawg!
Ask yourself: What is the greatest position of need this recruiting cycle? (If you said offensive linemen in any given year, you'd always be correct.) Given the difficulty of the position, and the explosive nature of the vertical game in today's college football, any time you can lure a potential shutdown-type cornerback to your program is a super-fine groovy thing.
We may have found our groove.
Malkom Parrish did it all for Brooks County, playing quarterback and cornerback for the small south Georgia school. The video below is evidence of Parrish's athletic ability and, particularly his ability to change direction. The kid is cat-quick and reminds me a little bit of Georgia's Auburn's Nick Marshall.
As a result of his individual performances during his senior season at Brooks County, and his impressive showing at the Army All-American game practices, Parrish's stock rose rapidly in the eyes of the major recruiting services, but he has remained firm in his commitment to Georgia and his lead recruiter Mike Bobo. Two of the top 3 recruiting services rate Parrish as a top 75 player, the third in the top 120.
Parrish looks like he knows what to do with the football once it's in his hands (playmaker in space?) At 5' 9" and 190, he's got good size to play corner right away, but could grow into a safety. He has excellent instincts and very good vision, as evidenced by his quarterbacking highlights where he anticipates openings and makes the appropriate cuts.
This kid may be too talented to red-shirt. He could see early playing time on special teams right away and get some reps on defense. There is a lot to be excited about in the class of 2014 as signing day is but a few hours away now. This kid has me about as amped as any recruit who has committed to The "G."
GATA, Malkom!
