With six games left in the regular season, Georgia's basketball squad controls their own destiny and has the inside track to earn a Top 4 seed in the upcoming SEC Basketball Tournament.
The Bulldogs currently sit at 14-10 and in third place in the conference with an 8-4 record after Saturday's win over Ole Miss. Georgia holds a one game advantage over the Rebels who are currently fourth and a two game lead over Missouri, LSU, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
If Georgia finishes in the Top 4 then they will receive a double bye in the tournament and wouldn't play until Friday in the quarterfinals. That is a much more favorable situation than what they have faced in recent seasons. The Bulldogs need to win the SEC Tournament to qualify for the NCAA Tournament but finishing the regular season in the Top 4 combined with a good showing in Atlanta could line them up for an invite to the NIT.
That is what is at stake and here is a look at the remainder of the schedule:
Tuesday - at Tennessee
Feb 22 - at South Carolina
Feb 25 - vs Missouri
Mar 1 - at Arkansas
Mar 5 - vs Mississippi State
Mar 8 - at LSU
The remaining schedule certainly isn't easy and Saturday's road game in South Carolina and the home rematch with Mississippi State quickly jump out as must wins. Tennessee was picked by many to challenge Florida and Kentucky but have proven to be inconsistent. A win in Knoxville Tuesday would be big in that it would also give Georgia the tie breaker over the Vols. The Bulldogs already hold the tie breaker over Ole Miss.
Georgia has already beaten Missouri, Arkansas and LSU this season but scoring sweeps could prove difficult. The wins over Arkansas and LSU came at Stegeman and the Bulldogs will have to hit the road this time around. The Bulldogs shocked Missouri on the road in the conference opener and the Tigers will be looking to return the favor in the rematch.
A 4-2 or 3-3 finish might be enough to lock down a Top 4 seed so Georgia doesn't have to be perfect but they do have to continue their string of good performances There might just be something to play for here and who would have thought that coming into the season.
