When is an upset not an upset?

So, I'm confused by something, and maybe someone can help. In the latest issues (9/30/2013) of ESPN The Magazine, they have an article on recruiting (p 26). In it, they're talking about a recruit who is interested in Clemson and comment (not a quote from the recruit, either) that "...Sharpe was blown away by the atmosphere in Death Valley when the Tigers upset Georgia."

Here's my question: If Clemson went into the game the favored team, favored by 3 points, and the final score was Clemson 38 and Georgia 35, how was it an upset?

I kinda thought an upset was when a strongly favored team loses to a team they were expected to beat handily. In my mind, the Michigan/App State game was an upset. I don't quite understand how our loss at Death Valley was though.
