NFL Draft Player Profile: Shawn Williams

Al Messerschmidt

As one of the more "aggressive" players on UGA's defense for the better part of the last four years, Shawn Williams is a bad man, a good leader, and a great enforcer.

When Shawn Williams joined the Dawgs in 2009, I immediately thought of Thomas Davis. Williams was a kid that said every correct thing in his interviews after committing to UGA, but could he be coached up to be a starting safety in the SEC? After all, he was only a 3-star player by most recruiting services and that means so much, right? Right?

If you look at Shawn Williams, you have to think "football player." His athleticism is not going to impress anyone until he hits you. He's not a good lateral mover, he's certainly not the ball-hawk that Rambo was, and he can tend to over-pursue instead of just flat-out tackling a guy, BUT this kid has a willingness and a drive to learn and get better every single play. Physically, Williams is strong and fast for his size. Depending on which web page you look at, he ran somewhere in the mid-4.4s at the Combine, and he did 25 reps in the bench press (not a small feat). Again, he's not the best lateral mover or jumper, but this has the size and strength to be a run-stopper at the next level.

The real key is whether or not he'll be able to keep up with a slot receiver or tight end at the next level. The one thing I do know is that Williams is a natural leader, and natural in the sense that you will not out hustle him, and you will not out work him. If you take a play off, he'll take your spot.

Cincinnati (a team that is quite familiar with UGA players by now) should expect a kid with a whole lot of grit, that became a two year starter at UGA by flat out taking the job and never letting it go. Don't forget the fact that it was Williams that called UGA's defense "soft" and could be credited with the turnaround mid-season on the Dawgs' D. Personally, I'm a fan of Shawn Williams and I'll miss him in a UGA uniform, but I believe wholeheartedly that he will be successful in the NFL and Cincinnati got a steal with him in the late Third Round.
