The Mark Richt Victory Watch: Episode  124.

Kevin C. Cox

In a victory that will look much better on paper than it probably did to Bulldog fans in attendance, the University of Georgia prevailed 45-6 over the visitors from Appalachian State University this afternoon. This means that it's time for me to take up the mantle of Dawg Sports founder, bacon enthusiast, and alleged Drive-By Truckers protagonist* T. Kyle King, updating the Mark Richt Victory Watch.

On Saturday, Mark Richt secured his 124th career win, moving him to within 77 victories of tying Vince Dooley for the all-time win record at Georgia. Coach Richt currently boasts a 124-43 record and a .743 winning percentage after 167 games.  At the identical juncture in their careers, Coach Wally Butts was 106-54-7 (.635) following a 6-0 loss to Texas A&M in 1954**, and Vince Dooley was 111-50-6 (.665) following a 22-22 tie with Auburn in 1978. I hate Auburn.

In short, Mark Richt stands statistically head and shoulders above his historical coevals at the same point in their respective careers. I'm also willing to bet that Mark Richt will retire with significantly more wins at the helm of the University of Georgia than Will Muschamp will carryaway from Gainesville

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday evening, including the Alabama/LSU contest which will kick off as soon as all the pregame hyperventilation ends. Until later . . .

Go 'Dawgs!!!

* Commentators are split on whether the DBT ode in question is "Drag the Lake, Charlie", "Gravity's Gone", or "Where The Devil Don't Stay".

** This particular game was discussed in detail in the book The Junction Boys. Bear Bryant's assistant coaches found a tell in the way the Bulldog quarterbacks set up under center and rode the observation all the way to victory. Bryant then called his friend Butts on Monday morning to tell him about it so the problem could be corrected.
