In case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance, you haven't, an ice rink is coming to the Classic Center. The rink will serve as home to the Ice Dogs, UGA's non-varsity ice hockey team. As a lifelong fan of the game (and, yes, I am a native Southerner), I am thrilled about the decision to build an ice rink in Athens. My hope is that this helps foster the development of the sport in the great state of Georgia, whose reputation as a "hockey state" was undoubtedly tarnished by the departure of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers. If you're in Athens when the rink is constructed, I encourage you to give the sport a shot. If anyone is curious, I'd be happy to write up a hockey primer for those unfamiliar with the sport. Go (Ice) Dawgs!
