There's a general sense of frustration I have been subjected to for the last 4 or 5 football seasons. It is my hope that I can write this post well enough that you all will know what I'm referring to. When CMR took over as the head coach things changed for the Georgia football program very quickly and the team competed at a very high level.
So, for the seasons through 2007 things were fantastic. The "finish the drill" mantra really saturated the team's identity. Football games were played, games were won, very few were lost. When the dawgs took the field there was a strong sense of confidence, poise, maturity, energy, understated dominance. They just looked like they were going to win and dominate all opponents (except of course UF). Do y'all have an idea of what I mean? Even when they lost a game, the team played well enough that the loss was acceptable, didn't hurt so much as they left it all on the field. The teams just looked like they were going to win. Watching them play was a real "feel good" and there was a lot of pride felt by all. They were just plain SOLID.
Now, since 2008, the general vibe (attitude, energy, feel, sense) is completely different. Even when they play well and win a game it just seems kind of tenuous. It's always like they're on the edge, like they're only an instant away from playing a terrible game. Generally the team just does not "look" like they're going to win. I remember games where they just carried themselves in such a way that we knew they were going to play well, and it looked easy, as if they just went about their business and could've played even better if needed. I'm not talking about all the celebrations after each down, the displays of being fired up by addressing the crowd with waving hands or giving head butts to teammates. There was a time when the team appeared to be flat, but internally they were deeply focused. We used to criticize the team for appearing to be flat, disinterested, lacking the fired up look, but when they played it was just lights out. Now, when they attempt to achieve that same poised look, they really are flat and slow. What is it?
Im referring to intangibles here. It's a hard subject. It's difficult to grasp, describe, and evaluate. What do y'all think?
