Everything is in readiness, so all that remains is to name this week’s Dawg Sports honorary game captain. The choice, of course, is clear: Athens’s own "Peerless Pilot," Fran Tarkenton, who capped off the Red and Black’s 1959 SEC championship campaign by guiding the Classic City Canines to victory in the 1960 Orange Bowl. Tarkenton led the ‘Dawgs on two scoring drives of 62 and 71 yards, the first of which began with the junior quarterback’s 17-yard return of a quick kick to set Georgia up at the opposition’s 38 yard line. Later in that possession, Tarkenton connected with right halfback Bill McKenny for a 29-yard touchdown strike on third and 14. The Bulldogs went on to win, 14-0, in their first series meeting with Mizzou. The second takes place tonight.
Join in the conversation, hope history repeats itself, and cheer on the Athenians as they open this new chapter for the Southeastern Conference.
Go ‘Dawgs!
