New Outdoor Stadium in Atlanta Might Actually Get Funding
Personally, I couldn't give a crap whether or not the Falcons get a new stadium. I don't speak the pro footballz. But I do know what a world-class 60,000 seat outdoor stadium in Atlanta would mean. This is exactly the kind of thing U.S. Soccer looks for when locating World Cup Qualifiers and home friendlies.
Are you ready for some soccer-ball??

Just don't let Georgia Tech have any control over it
We don’t want its official capacity being decreased each season
The 984 Has Spoken!
Teh football was meant to be played outdoors.
Both kinds. That is all.
Now on Twitter at @MaconDawg. Same great snark, fewer characters!

Atlanta really needs another event venue. They trying to get the olympics again in 16 years?

Atlanta does need this venue, though.
They have literally no major outdoor sports stadium closer than Athens. And the hedges and walking path around the field make Sanford Stadium too small for an international soccer pitch. And for reasons that very detailed and full of teh maffs, soccer just doesn’t work the same on artificial turf.
The Dome is great, and I wouldn’t want to move the SEC Championship Game or the Peach-Fil-A Bowl, but if we are ever going to see a major soccer event staged here again, we have to get an outdoor stadium that seats at least 35,000 people.
Oh, and the Falcons. Whatever… I don’t really know about that part.

Why can't they play soccer in the dome? I mean that both smart butted and serious at the same time.
I really don’t get it all in all. The dome has become a great thing with the falcons – an actual homefield advantage.

The bottom line is that international soccer can't be played on artificial turf.
Unlike football, in which the only reliance upon the turf is for the players’ bodies, in soccer it actually matters how the ball reacts to the turf, and how it slides over & through it.
The new brands of artificial turf (Field Turf and the like) are great for football because they provide a very realistic grass-feel while providing additional cushion that even a natural dirt-and-grass field wouldn’t provide. Soccer balls simply don’t travel on Field Turf they same way they travel on natural grass.
You might say, “tough turkey, just deal with it,” and indeed, some exhibition games between European and Latin American teams have been played in the Georgia Dome recently. At the international soccer level, though, there is just too much at stake and too many suitable alternative venues from which U.S. Soccer can choose.
If Atlanta ever wants to host a U.S. Men’s National Team match, they must have a legitimate outdoor stadium with a natural grass surface. (I suppose an indoor stadium with a natural grass field would be an option, but it would be nigh upon impossible to economically retrofit the Ga. Dome for the retractable roof and/or retractable field that would be required for such an effort. It would certainly be a lot cheaper just to build a new stadium.)

Does this mean
that we might get an MLS team and move back into that elite group of 4 sport cities?
Only if Atlanta gets another hockey team. )

Good luck with that after losing two NHL squads to Calgary and Winnipeg respectively. (Heavy sigh)

yea, there was a little sarcasm in my comment.
Atlantans don’t do hockey (although atlanta’s first championship team came from the IHL team)
and UGA fans dont do basketball.

See I don't think that's true
I loved having the Thrashers, and I knew and saw a lot of people who seemed to feel the same way. True, they weren’t as big as the Braves or the Falcons, but I’d say they were definitely more popular than the Hawks.
Losing the Thrashers was BS. The NHL commissioner stepped in to prevent the sale of the Coyotes, who were recently bankrupt and really ought to have been moved, but approved our sale after only being there for barely a decade. Basically the NHL thought that Phoenix somehow deserved a team more than we did, and that’s why we lost them.
We already have the Atlanta Beat!
What do you mean Women’s Professional Soccer doesn’t count?!

The day that WPS regularly pulls an average crowd of 20,000+...
… is the day it’ll count.
