Welcome to the Bulldog Nation, Mr. Gurley.

I hope you’re as excited as we are. (And thanks, CaptJackSparrow and Bosnian Dawg.)

Yes, thanks for being on this.

MaconDawg, who spearheads most of our recruiting coverage, has been very under the weather this week, and, frankly, I spent much of the day away from the computer, as I am changing offices at work. (We’re still in the same building, but my office is being moved from one room to the room next door.)

We are obliged to our loyal readers for keeping on top of developments.

He's bigger than 195.

He’s already up around 205, and looks to pick up 10-15 more in top season form. He won’t be RSIV big, but he’ll be big enough.

by first and thom on Jan 13, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

He's supposedly closer to 210 now

and his HS level is North Carolina, and not their highest level. But he’s been excelling for several years, led them to 3 state titles, and has been arguably the best on the field at the Carolina Shrine Bowl, and other all star events.

Well that all sounds really good.

How big is IC ? Didn’t he do all of that too? I hope this makes him get it together. It would be cool if we had two guys tt can hit the outside and be gone. Put em both in for pass blocking and hit a sophomore deep. It could work.

Yeah, Crowell was around the 210-220 range if I'm not mistaken

but he’s also listed several inches shorter than Gurley, so it’s packed on to a smaller frame. Gurley, from pictures, looks long and somewhat thin. He could easily bulk up in to the 230-240s by the time all is said and done. He’s also a world class high hurdler, so there’s some speed to burn in that big frame. So the physical tools are all there in a huge way. For lack of a better phrase to use, seems kind of like a ‘poor man’s’ Adrian Peterson.

Mike Davis

It’s looking like it’s us or South Carolina for him.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

And supposedly South Carolina is coming on strong

and having Gurley and Marshall probably doesn’t help. Unless we’re having multiple premature departures, we may not have room for him—Thomas, Malcome, Crowell, Marshall, Gurley, Harton, Samuel (who could be a FB).

http://sportsandgrits.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 13, 2012 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

If we landed all 3 of Davis to go with Gurley and Marshall

unless multiple already on board left the program, or we suffered numerous injuries, a redshirt for at least one would be a certainty. There’s only one ball, and we, I assume, are hoping Crowell can step up and become that 20+ per game guy shouldering the load, which limits the reps for the remaining backs.

http://sportsandgrits.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 13, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

I would agree that South Carolina is a likely pick for him.

But I have read where he’s stated several times that it won’t affect his decision that other RB’s have committed. He says he’s open to competition wherever he chooses. So that gives some reason for optimism in landing Mike Davis as well.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Except, we've only got 85 spots to fill

and we need another OL (or 2-4 more if you ask tankertoad—said in sarcasm font), another DL or 2, are still pursuing some more LBs, and another TE, as well as Patterson at WR so we could take one more there, and we need at least 1 CB, if not multiple DBs. So without a lot of defections, we’re running pretty tight on that 85 max, and I’m not sure how we’ll fit them all in.

I wouldn't object if we recruited 10 linemen every year.

You’ve convinced me that Bobo’s play calling is bad, but his plays would look a hell of a lot better if we had a full stable of healthy, experienced O-linemen. (And, yes, the fact that we don’t have those guys is his fault, as is the fact that we don’t call plays that compensate for our weaknesses.)

I can't imagine all three getting significant playing time their true freshman year.

It would probably be an open competition through spring and summer to earn playing time. My best guess is one red shirt at the most, either Gurley or Davis.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

No question that Marshall has a huge leg-up for playing time due to getting enrolled early

That and being projected as a better back anyways.

Outside of (God forbid) a preseason injury, I don’t see how Marshall could redshirt.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

My bet would be Gurley

based on the rankings both Davis and Marshall are better RB prospects, but all three sound like a sound decision. If Crowell shows up in the spring limping he may get a red shirt.

by Dawg2011 on Jan 13, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

I don't like the idea of Crowell redshirting.

I hold on to some hope that he can turn his attitude around and get healthy. If he redshirts, then he may very well mentally give up or transfer.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, if it's a medical reason then yes.

I interpreted Dawg2011’s comment as pertaining more toward his lack of hustle. If his ankle isn’t healed up, then I’m totally for a medical redshirt.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Nah more in line with TT's comment

If that ankle is still banged I would rather have him heal it until he is ready. I think he has the potential and don’t want to see him limp through 4 years

I HATE ORANGE, and DGNBs

by Dawg2011 on Jan 13, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

As said below though, if the ankle were such an issue it couldn't heal over the next 8 months between today

and fall practice, wouldn’t we hear about it? Wouldn’t he be having surgery on it? If it’s that bad, sit him spring practice. If it can’t heal enough over the next 6+ months, then it’s a much bigger issue than anyone’s ever made it out to be.

http://sportsandgrits.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jan 13, 2012 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

I dont know that we ever have heard (or ever will) the truth on his injuries. He made it for just a few plays in the bowl.

I just want him to take 3 months, 6 months or a year, whatever it takes, to be fully healed. You’ll hear the same on the next podcast.

I agree.

I sat next to two guys at the Outback Bowl who kept bashing Crowell. The play where he got here, they said something to the affect of, “yep, that’s about it for Crowell….damn shame…thought he’d be good”.

Too many people have labeled him a bust way too early.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 8:22 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

He's got 9 months to heal that ankle

that’s more than enough time. If it was that bad he’d need a redshirt, then you’d be hearing about him having surgery. And there has been no talk at all about surgery.

I like the idea of letting him play some full back.

Normally I’d question his ability to catch passes out of the flat, but as there is no provision for such nonsense in the green notebook I’m not concerned. His experience blocking on 3rd and Bobo plays as well as running the ball can only help.

by Swarles_Barkley on Jan 13, 2012 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

I'm afraid the answer is the back of the line.

Crowell and Marshall will both play for sure, probably 1a and 1b. Figure Malcome and Gurley come next. Carlton Thomas probably loses carries in a big way. RSIV is a great athlete that simply doesn’t excel at RB.

I doubt the FB switch happens, but he could probably get big enough, has a nose for contact, blocks con gusto, and catches well out of the backfield.

I don't get that though

as it puts him still able to lose time behind LeMay. Why not go elsewhere, use your redshirt year in the mandatory have to sit out season, and still have 2 to play 2? Although I guess, wherever he’d go, unless it was 1-AA, he’d have to beat someone out for the job (so there’s no guarantees he’d start elsewhere either).

Strange thing is though

with all this talk of adding another OL, another DL, another TE, another LB or 2, a couple DBs, and maybe Patterson at WR, where is this space coming from against the 85?

I’d definitely figured Matson would go too, maybe to Ga St, or perhaps North Carolina, among other possibles since it wouldn’t be Clemson, Tech, or an SEC school. I guess now he has that one inbetween year, where we can go from senior (Murray) to senior (Mason) to senior (LeMay) to redshirt sophomore (Ramsey).

We currently have 4 OL commits this year

one of whom is already on campus. And we have a DE who played OG in the All American game. And we are in the mix for another OL or two for the class.

The coaches have not overlooked the OL at all in this recruiting cycle. They have prioritized it.

I got a dollar that says that LeMay plays 2...

…and that means that Mason is basically a scholarship backup-backup QB. The coaches now better how LeMay is progressing, but (unless Murray goes pro after next year) it sure seems like we might lose by fighting too hard to keep Mason on board.

He played in the bowl game after fall grades came out.

All grade rumors are full of crap at this point.

"I don't care who commits where"

LOL 2 hours after Gurley comes here he goes there. I am sure it had nothing to do with it.

Ha. Yeah, I said something to that affect after seeing that.

Oh well. After reading his twitter comments, he doesn’t seem as mature as Marshall or Gurley so I don’t think we missed out too much.

In his defense, though...

he was on his official visit to South Carolina. If he was sitting on his couch at home and saw Gurley commit then he commits elsewhere, then I would be much more judgmental. It’s entirely possible he had his mind made up before Gurley announced.

Wonderful!

We now have another beefy big back that’s at least 6 feet tall and at least 200 pounds. He and Marshall will make a huge difference next year.
