Thursday Night College Football/Conference Expansion/Barbecue/Oxford Comma Open Comment Thread
This, for the record, is what we have on the docket for us this evening:
- There are 14---count ‘em, 14---college football games being played this evening, beginning at 6:00 p.m., and including two SEC teams and an annual Georgia rival in Georgia Tech.
- There is recruiting news.
- Yesterday, I received an e-mail from a public school teacher who is looking for four tickets to Saturday night’s game in the Georgia Dome, so she can take her family to see the ‘Dawgs. If anyone can hook her up, drop me a line in the comments below and let me know whether it’s all right for me to contact you privately at the e-mail address in your SB Nation account. Thanks in advance to anyone who can lend an assist.
- Spencer Hall has 100 thoughts on college football, Year2 has subtracted 1904 from 2011 and come up with "almost 100," Bill Connelly has 14 candidates to be the SEC’s 14th team, John Isner had 14 aces en route to the second round of the U.S. Open, Rock Chalk Talk has five pictures of the wheel route in action, and Doug Gillett has two personalities regarding the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
That, my friends, is a full slate, so dive right into the season’s first Thursday night open comment thread. Everyone is invited to join in the fun of the first day of football season. I’ll try to join in later this evening, and I’ll be back tomorrow morning with a "Dune"-themed edition of "Too Much Information."
Go ‘Dawgs!

I think FW did an OK job of filling the holes we had. I love MattyD, so I was thrilled for us to get him back. Jack will be a good utility type player for our infield. It’s nice to know we don’t have to depend on Brooksy to play defensively come post season:)

I'm sure Brooksy would concur ;-)

Haha and on Boscan and Varvaro being called up
Boscan should allow us to use David Ross as a right-handed pinch hitter in key situations, and Varvaro will give the bullpen yet another power arm.

I will pay good money

All right, I think I'm caught up now.
Here’s what I got:
1. RedCrake and I are going to rename DavetheDawg “goat” and sacrifice him if he ever pulls that “Bulldogs suspend five players” crap on us again.
2. It’s been an active night here at the site, which is way cool.
3. Podunkdawg has proven that she makes T-shirts like she bakes (e.g., in demonic fashion), with two polls up to make sure the T-shirt meets maximum specifications for quality, front and back.
4. UNLV (by whose arena I recently rode, oddly enough) stinks.

Thomas & Mack Arena was visible on the ride from the Las Vegas airport to the hotel, and we passed the exit to (but did not see) Sam Boyd Stadium on the way to Hoover Dam.

Oh...regarding "Lonesome Dove"
and I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m still mad at central casting for their choice of actor who played “Blue Duck.”
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
I honestly feel...
… that there is just huge misunderstanding when it comes to the character of “Blue Duck”. I actually think that Frederic Forrest did well with the task he was given. I think that problem that people have is they are expecting to see that more Hollywood generated version of what a Native American is supposed to look like. “Blue Duck” is a “halfbreed”, as he is referred to in the book/film. He is he biracial son of a Comanche chief (“Buffalo Hump”) and a kidnapped Mexican woman. With this in mind, I feel it makes the believability of Frederic Forrest as “Blue Duck” a bit easier to accept.
But this may be just because I have watched this mini series in its entirety more than I would to admit and have just become used to Frederic Forrest.

Last time I checked we don't have alot of songs that feature the cowbell.

That was a dangerous tackle by the MSU defender.
Head-down, leading with his helmet, and he launched himself off the ground at the runner. He was so awkward in the air that he almost hit him sideways.

Maybe.
Since Josh Daniels isn’t there anymore, though, I’m going to have to say that slot is filled by the Oakland Raiders. Al Davis is always solid for a bonehead move in the first round.

In retrospect, . . .
. . . it turned out to be a pretty fair question. It was just inopportune timing, though, when you go back and watch the clip, it’s really funny hearing Todd Blackledge trying to make sense of the question as the absurdity of it seeps down through the layers of his brain.

Another helmet-leading tackle.
This crap needs to be flagged when done like this. I don’t normally side with the No Fun League, but head-down hits directly lead to increased risk of concussion and major spinal injuries.
The coaches need to be teaching these kids properly, and being punished when they don’t.
And on the play where the Memphis WR was injured...

Unfortunately, we're one of those retro clubs...

They're not neck-deep...

Those 50 ton blocks to that fortress on Ancient Aliens, or Kentucky’s inability to block anyone in this game.
I am with Dave, Chariots of the Gods was awesome. I can’t figure out why it took so long to start doing shows about it.
Well, I can give you the history, and I told you I am more connected to this than I want to admit.
History channel had been doing “histories mysteries” for a while. It’s one step off from Ancient Aliens.
Giorgio A. Tsoukalos has been doing his published mag and now website “legendary times” for a while. Finally, all these guys got together and made a product. AA is basically histories mysterious with a twist. Giorgio is a producer, which is why he is on the show so much.

I can't stay awake anymore
Taught all day, worked in the concession stand at my school football game for 3 hours, and watched some truly pathetic college football.
I promise I’ll be in better condition tomorrow :-)
Enjoy my gratuitous midnight booze post.
Sacrificing goats, chugging Maker's Mark, and walking underneath The Arch.
Kentucky sucks so badly . . .
. . . that, at halftime, Vanderbilt officially moved up into fifth place in the SEC East.

See?
I told you Spears was Luke, but in a good, bringing-tankertoad-back-from-the-Dark-Side-after-tankertoad-goes-rogue-and-kills-me sort of way, not in a bad, your-inner-self-serves-you-well-but-only-after-you-kissed-your-sister-on-the-lips sort of way.

glad i waited on my "SEC look". It seems i was wrong on the UK

That's it.
Kyle has brought down the curtain and Dave Neal’s silky smooth tonality has finally sent me into the neverland.
Good night, all! In about 48 hours, we’re going to have some answers. Whereas Kentucky knows all they need to know already.

I will one day tell my grandchildren that I sat through the 2011 Kentucky-WKU game . . .
. . . the way older American men told their grandchildren they fought in World War II.
That, or I’ll just bag this crap and go to bed.

Here's the highlight for Caleb King's TD for the Vikings

It thinks Kentucky owes it an apology.

Fair enough.
I’ll admit I’m working from a fairly small sample size at this stage. I’m reserving final judgment at least until Labor Day.

Yeah the ref thing was awesome
I guess they are just “part of the field”. Surprised he didn’t catch it and run it it for a TD for WKU

If they're just "part of the field," though, . . .
. . . shouldn’t a ball hitting a ref make it an incomplete pass (e.g., as if the ball had touched the turf)?
This is a corollary to a question asked by my brother-in-law: “If holding in the end zone is a safety, why isn’t pass interference in the end zone a touchdown?”

All right, it's midnight, this thread has reached 400 comments, . . .
. . . and Team Speed Kills is stealing my jokes (perhaps accidentally) on Twitter, where, in a fit of punchiness, I just offered an observation about a digital rectal examination. I think it’s time I headed to bed.

Is this something like talking about a perfect game while it's in progress?
I saw this comment a split second before the ball was snapped on that TD.
Yes exactly like that
which is why i never say anything during the uga games with any tinge of “foresight”. And i better not read anything like it either.

ESPN added a random 2 points to the score for a few minutes.
I guess even they were befuddled after that pathetic display.
