Nike_pro_combat_uniforms__8

As reader JDav helpfully brought to our attention, Nike appears to have jumped the gun a bit and revealed the Pro Combat uniforms which were set to be unveiled in Athens on Picture Day and on Facebook at noon.

I'm not putting this one to a poll vote---well, maybe not yet---but I figured I'd open it up for discussion.

What do y'all think? (As if I didn't know. . . .)

I thought “VOMITCRYDEATH” from the earlier thread would be the comment of the day, but you may have just topped it. Well done!

Do not like. Do not like fake juice.

We get crushed left and right for 6-7 and losing our bowl and here we go again with the fake juice. Our fan attendance and knowledge of UGA’s colors have been just fine. It’s the Ws that havent been. There has been no lack of fan support and booster money.

GRRR, this crap makes me angry. I just described it to my Mom without showing her and she said it sounded like they were trying to make them look like an action hero or something.

Agreed.

My initial thought was that they looked like some elite corps of Stormtroopers, but my knowledge of “Star Wars” is not sufficiently thorough for me to state that with certainty.

What can I tell you? I’m a “Star Trek” guy, and, as with Beatles/Stones and Batman/Superman, ultimately, you have to pick one or the other.

you see, this is why we were irritated about this last year

the bama athletic department clamped down pretty hard on nike and made the alterations pretty minimal. but that raises the question – why make any changes at all? all you end up with is some godawful dog-and-pony show that takes people’s attention from the real issue at hand – preparing for the season.

You make them because Nike pays a lot of money to clothe you...

you make minimal changes because it helps maintain the brand or whatever you wanna call it with the traditional appearance, but get the uptick in jersey sales cause they’re “new”, and most importantly, minimal alterations avoids allowing Nike artists to make whatever heroin and acid induced creations they desire (because we’ve seen it all plenty from the single color sleeve of Florida and Va Tech, to the dress up doll of Oregon, and several other eye sores they’ve created for various programs).

i understand all that

but it seems more than a little absurd to go through the motions for no good reason. bama also tucked their pro combat game against a middling foe at the end of october. by starting off with these uni’s you now have to handle the question of whether to keep wearing them if the bulldogs are successful with them from the start.

I haven't hunted around the Nike website (linked to in the previous thread), . . .

. . . but I’d think all the opening weekend uniforms would be there.

Boise State is used to this kind of crap, though; the Broncos aren’t Oregon, but they’ve had a lot of uniform variations, including last year’s “Pro Combat” uniforms against Virginia Tech, and they’ve been in Division I-A for 15 years. Whatever they’re wearing, by definition, can’t be as big a deviation as this.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Aug 20, 2011 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

i've pointed this out before elsewhere

but wearing eye catching uniforms goes hand-in-hand with the school’s tradition. while the ducks have a long football history, they are far better known in recent times due to their track team and their pioneering coach bill bowerman.

the oregon coach understood just how damn close the best runners were in terms of ability. as a result he was a tireless tinkerer with the team’s gear, always looking for some kind of technological edge for his runners. most famously he destroyed his wife’s waffle iron burning treds on for a shoe to give it more surface area to grab the track.

one of his more visible changes was to ditch the school’s old yellow and have his runners wear the retina-searing shade we know today. why? because if there was a close race, in an era the eye of the official meant more than anything else in determining the outcome, the oregon shirt would be the most eye catching.

it’s not by accident phil knight was a runner under bowerman and it’s not a coincidence that the approach of the former coach weighs so heavily on the philosophy of the former miler.

by Mark Mandingo on Aug 20, 2011 9:22 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

This is either a case of life imitating art, or an attempt at a competitive advantatge.

My whole life our culture has been obsessed with what things will look like in the future, but all we have to go on is artists’ concepts and what we see in the movies. Everyone seems to think that a time is coming just over the horizon where art, fashion and architecture break free from stodgy, rigid geometric shapes and patterns in favor of a more sinuous, organic motif. The late 20th/early 21st century has been a race to see who can get to the future first; that is, who can get to what we think the future will be. As if we will be so glad to cast off the tried-and-true liveries of today.

On the other hand, maybe Nike is trying to bring the new look to a big name like UGA to gain a marketing and competitive advantage, if only in people’s minds. The slightly subdued, off-hue primary colors combined with the nearly-featureless monochrome uniform might be an attempt to make the wearers look faster, as if they are slicing through the air over the ground. Nothing there but a red blur. It may or may not work on the field, but it needs only work in athletes’ and sports fans’ minds.

Either way, I’m not a fan.

by NCT on Aug 20, 2011 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Why do we let Nike call the shots?

They pay us money, but so will Addidas, Russell Athletic, and (god forbid) Under Armour. Alabama was able to calm Nike down and have a uniform that was innovative, but close to the original Alabama uniform. That is because Nick is in charge and not Nike.

These unifroms with the red jerseys and the red pants are ugly. It will reduce my enjoyment of looking at the game. It will confuse people around the country as to who is actually playing against oise State.

What we look like DOES matter, especially on a national stage. Our uniforms are part of our brand. If you do not believe that marketing details and brand recognition are important, ask the PR guys down at that little company called Coca-Cola. They spend months on the placement of the “dynamic ribbon” on the logo. The “dynamic ribbon” is the curvy line on the Coke logo.

by Vinings Dog on Aug 20, 2011 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I love Coke*, but

99% of what the Coca-Cola Company sells is its brand, not its product. The Dynamic Ribbon Device and distinctive bottle shape are much, much more important than the beverage itself. I agree that branding is very important to UGA, but our product (play on the field) is relatively more important to sales.

*Lest I again be taken out of context, let me repeat: I DO NOT TAKE THE COCAINE. Thank you for your kind attention.

by NCT on Aug 20, 2011 1:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Every time I see a response from you.......

I think you are typing when you should be looking at the road while driving (this has nothing to do with your comments and everything to do with your photo). Anyway, be careful.

Yes, comparatively, the product we put on the field is more important than what is inside a Coke bottle. However, the fact remains that it matters what you look like on many levels, even some beneath the surface. Psychologists have noted for years that people behave better when they are dressed better (you are less apt to break into a home when you are wearing a suit and tie). And, we all know from watching “Cops” that the guy not wearing a shirt is going to jail. I am jesting about “Cops,” but criminologists have pointed out that the little, subtle things matter.

I think the breakdown among the fans may fall into age-based groups. Those alums who are older are probably more outraged than the youngsters.

I do understand.

For the record, I’m 45.

I would have been much more pleased with a slick futuristic design that gave significant nods to traditions that I revere. Not sure if you saw a comment I made a few days ago, but I think I’d have accepted almost any Oregonesque atrocity if they’d just let us have our silver britches.

I also strongly agree with you about the importance of branding and the psychological effects of attire. I clerked one summer for a London solicitor and had the privilege of working a long felony trial. I occasionally had to stifle a chuckle when I looked up from my notes and saw all these grown men and women wearing robes and wigs, but I admired the commitment to ritual, which (if it’s a ritual that already is part of your culture) was an integral part of putting everyone in the right frame of mind for the proceedings.

All in all, I think you and I have very similar beliefs about the uniforms. However, it is in our reactions where we differ. I believe that this uniform choice was and is beyond my control. I do not believe that I can make a positive difference to anything by complaining about them. I believe there is some risk, however small, that I might make a negative difference, however small, by complaining about them. My beliefs, my choices. Yore may differ, and that’s cool.

Shorter version: SERENITY NOW! (and the wisdom to know the difference and all that).

I do not text (surf/blog/tweet) and drive. Kyle also has had that concern, btw. I just happen to like the photo. I named the file “whistling past”, because there’s a cemetery in the background.

Simmer down.

I’m not thrilled by the design, but come on, fellas. In the grand scheme of things, this is not that important. No, we are not Oregon, but neither are we Bama or Michingan or Penn State. In my humble opinion, we permanently lost the right to insist on old-school traditional uniforms when Dooley brought the Packers’ logo to us (a symbol I embrace because I have no choice).

Silver Britches are the closest thing we have to “sacred” when it comes to our uniforms, and that’s an arguable claim. Nothing about our uniforms, other than Red and Black, will ever rise to the level of our Hedges, the Arch, the Chapel Bell, and the Redcoats. We have untouchable traditions; uniforms are not among them.

I respectfully submit that the echo chamber of outrage is silly at best and downright counterproductive at worst. So vent if you must, because Lord knows I am sympathetic to passion when it comes to matters of taste, but please let’s not turn this into more than what it is.

I will not simmer down

The fact that Nike makes these decisions, even with UGA approval, drives me crazy. We are held captive by their non-traditional stylists who have NO respect for our traditions. We have worn red helmets for almost 50 years. That earns us the right to say to call them a tradition.

by Vinings Dog on Aug 20, 2011 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

Good point. We've worn red helmets for much longer than I've been alive...

Except when we didn’t wear red helmets, as in the 2009 Florida game. Actually, considering how that game turned out, I might be with you on this one. Messing with tradition causes bad things to happen…except when it doesn’t, like when we wore the black shirts vs. Auburn in 2007.

Perhaps coaching and player focus has more to do with success than jerseys?

by TreeDawgNight on Aug 20, 2011 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

and...

perhaps we should help the “players focus” by helping them not obsess about the uniforms by… not obsessing over the uniforms.

by HerschelBlogger on Aug 20, 2011 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Who's to say that the players are obsessed?

Though the last three years have given me little reason to do so, I still trust our coaches to keep the players focused on what’s important. After the fiascos of Alabama ‘08 and Florida ’09, I think the coaches, and hopefully the players, have learned a lesson. Besides, the jerseys were unveiled to them long ago, so I doubt that they are giving it as much thought right now as we are. Don’t get me wrong, I think the uniforms are hideous and a slap in the face of tradition, but I just can’t bring myself to get upset about it. I’m too excited to see the ’Dawgs take the field, regardless of the wardrobe.

By contract, we’re required to hold our hands like that for a total of 2 1/2 quarters.

For those of you who don't feel like clicking a link...

…here’s what they look like “in person.”

I’m gonna have to agree with NCT. We’re eventually going to need to simmer down. Thankfully, we have two weeks to do so. I just don’t see the reason to complain. I don’t like them, but what good is it to whine about Nike not “respecting our traditions! lolOMFGwtf”

It’s not like we haven’t deviated from our traditions in the past few years by ourselves. Let Nike do their marketing ploy. Let’s just support the players. I’m pretty sure they can GATA just as well in silver helmets as they can in red.

As long as Aaron Murray isn’t wearing those “bada$$” gloves, I’ll be satisfied.

Well, I don't comment often

But I feel like I need to say this. Regardless of like or dislike, the best we can do now is a…
REDOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by RussIsMyHomeboy on Aug 20, 2011 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

Unlike every other home game, you mean?

Georgia fans always wear red already… how is a “red-out” doing things any differently?

by vineyarddawg on Aug 20, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

But this is a...

Blind your opponent type of red-out causing them to hopefully black-out.

Uniforms are part of branding

Imagine a beautiful, Pininfarina designed red Ferrari. Now imagine a bunch of knuckleheads trying to "improve" the look by taking some of the critical design elements away from the car. THAT is what Nike has done to Georgia for the game against Boise State.

We have one of the best color schemes and uniforms in all of college football. The cap backwards crowd at Nike has taken our tradition and turned it on its head.

Alabama’s Pro Combat uniforms had subtle changes that honored the team and its history. We do not get that type of respect. Instead, we get a weird red stripe on a silver helmet with a futuristic red jersey with red pants. Where is the black, silver and white?

We will NOT look like Georgia when we play Boise State in front of a national television audience. We look more like Arkansas, Fresno State or Utah with their solid red helmets with no stripes. I cannot believe our new AD agreed to this.

And for those of you who say who cares or that the players are excited, sports marketing matters and who cares if the players are excited, will these drastic changes make them play harder now? What, playing the first game of the season against a ranked opponent wasn’t enough? Oh, you needed an urban looking football uniform to REALLY get you pumped and ready to play? Never mind that many of us in the stands would have given virtually anything to play ONE DOWN for the University of Georgia.

Tradition. Pride. Excellence. These words mean nothing to Nike. The words for them are "Cool," " Sick," and of course, "Awesome!"

by Vinings Dog on Aug 20, 2011 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

along the lines of the people complaining about tradition....

….are the people complaining about players “needing” uniform changes to get excited, instead of simply being excited to play for the Georgia Bulldogs.
You sir, are both.
Maybe the problem with player motivation isn’t about how many stripes are on the helmet, or whether or not they can “get it up” for big games. Maybe to get motivated, they just need people like to you quit shitting in THEIR kool-aid.
(Forgive me TKK, there was really no better way to put it, with the needed emphasis.)
If THEY think they look like dumbasses because that’s what they’ve been hearing for two weeks, that might just play on them a bit. And I’m not even going to THINK about if fans in the crowd BOO the uniforms. If that were to happen, I’d lose all shreds of faith in this fanbase…..

I understand, HerschelBlogger, . . .

. . . but, if we could keep the language a little under control, I’d be appreciative.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Definitely agree with the idea that before a national audience, we will again look like someone other than ourselves. I just hope unlike the last few jersey permuatations we’ve had, this one isn’t another attempt to put a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

And the helmet looks pretty badass with the strip going down the grill.
