Orson Charles Eligibility Issue?
The Charles Robinson Yahoo article on this Miami booster scares me because of the mere mention of Orson's name. I hope this does not become an issue:
"Among the specific incidents, Shapiro or other sources say Hurtt, Hill, Stoutland, Pannunzio and Allen all delivered top-tier recruits to Shapiro’s home or luxury suite so the booster could make recruiting pitches to them. Among the players who were ushered to Shapiro while they were still in high school: Eventual Miami commitments Ray-Ray Armstrong, Dyron Dye and Olivier Vernon (prompted by Hurtt); eventual Florida commitments Andre Debose (Hurtt) and Matt Patchan (prompted by Stoutland and Pannunzio); eventual Georgia commitment Orson Charles (Pannunzio); and eventual Central Florida commitment Jeffrey Godfrey (Allen)."

It appears that he only visited the guy’s house and had “impermissible contact” with the Miami booster. It doesn’t appear to be any worse than that. Then again, who knows when it comes to the NCAA’s random punishment generator.

I showed [Charles] my closet. The reason why I show all the kids my closet is because that’s where I had like 50 to 70 UM game-worn jerseys of all the best players in the last however long. That was our first visit. I saw him a second time and I think it was a Miami football camp.
That sounds innocuous enough, but you’re correct about anything to do with the NCAA.
I never thought I’d see the “Death Penalty” again, but I wonder now. If all these UM allegations are true, the burden is squarely on the NCAA to do something big.

Now that I think of it
Wasn’t impermissible contact effectively what was self-reported in the Ray Drew/David Pollack situation? As we’ve both stated, you never know when it comes to the NCAA, but I don’t think this is really something to hold our collective breaths over. It would seem this would be a Miami problem and not a UGA problem since no benefits other than an impermissible meeting of a booster were received.

If this is all that happened
then you’re right. A high school kid goes on a recruiting trip. He’s taken to the home of a booster (bad), booster tries to make impression (natch), kid leaves. Doesn’t sign with team.
I’m sure the NCAA will eventually do an interview with Orson, but it sounds like this is totally a ’Canes thing. Obviously, young Mr. Charles was not impressed.

the problem is the interview and the associated digging. If memory serves, Orson could prove that he’s “never been to Miami,” and still get suspended for something or other.

It says that Charles' high school coach took him to Shapiro's house.
What a piece of crap. He should be fired.
Well, we all know how this is going to work out.
It will be announced 10 minutes before kickoff of the Boise State game that Orson Charles has been ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA.
/Hooray, pessimism!
This guy's honesty is somewhat reassuring
He seems to be selling everyone down the river, so apparently he has chosen to be candid. Given what he says about Charles, it doesn’t sound like there is much there. Then again, anything connecting this guy/the city of Miami/the U with any of our players makes me cringe.
Upon closer review, it also looks like he’s been communicating with the NCAA since March and the story has been in the works since December. Presumably that’s given the NCAA enough time to communicate with existing players with potential eligibility issues (which, let’s be honest, should really be their priority).
Agreed on the death penalty thing. Perhaps this, coupled with pressure on schools to join the SEC, precipitates the breakup of the ACC. And we thought the Big 12 was vulnerable….
I'm not worried; I agree with AuditDawg that this is analogous to Ray Drew . . .
. . . having David Pollack at his announcement. If Orson didn’t take anything from the guy, it sounds like a secondary violation, and not one we committed, so he should be cool. I agree with Bard Parker, though; I now hope he broke something with his butt while he was there.
Good point about Miami taking the ACC down with it the way SMU took down the SWC, WindyCityDawg. We may have even less trouble than expected finding a 14th team!
