How Big a Deal is Carlton Thomas's Suspension for the Georgia Bulldogs?
Judging by this afternoon’s comment thread, there appear to be two schools of thought concerning Carlton Thomas’s suspension. In an effort to take Bulldog Nation’s temperature a bit more precisely, I offer the following poll:

It's not a big deal
because we’re going with a 5-Tight End set all year anyway. One’s already in the backfield.

It’s a new offense called “The Jordache”. It’s all about tight ends.

A Jordache reference seems particularly appropriate when discussing Georgia football . . .
. . . since neither has been particularly relevant since the early ’80s!

At least, Isaiah Crowell is the best back of the bunch.
What did he do?
I am sure the NCAA will say that the puppy was a booster and Isiah has to sit out for 4 games.

I really don't think that our running game
over the last few years could get any worse with all the recent developments. Between Ealey’s fumblitis and inability to pick up a blitz//Kings lack of motivation//and Carlton Thomas’ inability to make people miss…what difference does it make. Dang. I sure hope Mr. Crowell is all he’s cracked up to be. Also, why doesn’t any of this kind of crap happen at UA or UT or UF or AU? <>

Here's my question: Is CMR being too conservative with Crowell like he was with Knowshon?
My thinking is Crowell is the starter, so we only need fill-ins/backups. Of course, I’m not on the practice field so I don’t know how valid my thought process is. If I am correct, then this is all much ado about nothing. I don’t want to think about it if I’m wrong…

Excuse me, Depressive Kyle...
…I think I have some news that will be right up your alley.
You accused me of being too optimistic earlier today about this whole Carlton Thomas situation.
Well….. (and I’m NEVER this guy, so bear with me,)
I just heard from my friend, whom shall remain nameless but he is a beloved starter for our dear Dawgs, that Isaiah is teetering on the suspension ledge himself. Apparently he has missed 5 work-outs already and if he misses one more, he will be looking at suspension.
I would never speak ill of someone strictly based on hearsay, so I most definitely refrained from posting on my blog about this or posting a FanShot or anything, but I figured I needed to let Depressive Kyle know that our “situation” could worsen soon, and our saviour may just not be all that he’s hyped up to be…

Why on heaven's earth would an incoming freshman miss workouts?
If this is true, there should have never been a 2nd time, let alone 5. I dont care if Poppa Joe T has to go to their rooms and run them to workouts, this is insane.
You know what, let me start. I promise to make the work outs and go to class and practice scooter safety.

"One thing I will never do as long as I’m at Georgia is lose to Florida." - Herschel Walker
I don't think it can be argued as "bad" that he's around...
you can argue whether he should be in the particular position he’s in, but having him “around” the program is a great thing in my mind, irrespective of the specific title (he’s had so many the past 30+ years).
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
Mr Sanchez,
We do a good job here of agreeing to disagree, but I am of the fundamental belief that until all ties to the 80s and Vince Dooley are cut (at least the direct ones) we will never regain our glory. I simply feel that there are too many old heads and old hats with too many connections to the old days. Do I think Joe T is a bad guy, no. Do I think he needs to be out of the football program, yes. Same for Bobo. Many people have this idea, like with Kirby Smart, that because someone was a “DGD” that means they should work in our football program. However, truth be told we do better with more outside influence. When CMR came in with no UGA connections and “finish the drill” it brought in a new era. We desperately needed CTG to bring in some outside influence and opinion.
I don’t hate or even dislike CJT. I just don’t think he should be the S&C coach. I dont hate or disklike CMB, I just don’t think we will ever win a NC, or even an SEC with him on the sidelines.
"One thing I will never do as long as I’m at Georgia is lose to Florida." - Herschel Walker
While in general I might agree...
there are various positions I don’t mind former players being involved, such as S&C assistants, video coordinator, and other support staff. In positions such as these, I think having a loyal, hard working, demanding individual is a good thing, regardless of collegiate playing location.

I heard on the radio this morning that the producers of Charlie Sheen's new sitcom . . .
. . . have hired a guy whose job is to make sure Charlie shows up for work.
My first thought was, “Any employee who requires you to hire a second employee to make sure the first employee shows up for work is not someone you should hire.”
My second thought was, “We need to hire one of those guys for our football team.”
My third thought was, “Isn’t that Joe T.’s job?”

Actually gaining yardage would be a plus, but it’s not mandatory.

A simple question
How can we have 4 dumbasses in one backfield? 1 or 2… ok. That happens to lots of schools at one point or another. But 4?
I know he never set the world on fire, but I could go for another Thomas Brown right about now.

Wut?
Aren’t all workouts “optional” (yeah, I know) right now? And if so, how could a player be suspended for missing optional workouts without ruffling the NCAA’s feathers?
Great question...
My guess would be that there are still team meetings and requirements and that he’s dancing with the line. At this point though, do we really need to question it? If there’s a way for our players to get suspended, they’ll find it.
by HerschelBlogger on Jul 19, 2011 10:07 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Workouts are optional.
So is playing time.
I have absolutely no problem with giving preferential treatment to the hardworking.
(I would add that, while I have no cause to doubt HerschelBlogger’s source, I don’t know who it is, either, so I can neither confirm nor deny the accuracy of this report. That’s not to cast aspersions on HerschelBlogger or the person to whom he spoke, but, in the absence of verification which I cannot claim to have, I don’t want to present this as though I know it to be true; I don’t. That doesn’t mean it’s not, but it does mean I can’t say it is, which is why I’m not posting it on the front page as though I know it’s so.)

Oh, I agree
Anyone who isn’t working hard should get kicked to the bottom of the depth chart. But the important distinction between sinking to the bottom and getting suspended is that, when all our other running backs inevitably fall ill with manbearpig flu, a player who is not suspended is still available to take handoffs — and then fumble the ball on the 1-yard line.
If Crowell is a problem, let's find out now.
We no longer have the luxury of sneaking by.

Does this football program have any leaders and any good natured peer pressure?
Ultimately, there is only so much CMR can do. They are free Americans in college. One of the major pieces we have been missing is team leadership. If someone misses a workout, I fully expect Aaron Murray to show up and chew their ass out. Someone goofs off, misses workouts, gets in trouble, maybe the team lets them know about it with a little extra attention on the practice field by kicking their butt. If I was a walk on working my tail off, I would be livid that the starters and scholarship players were missing workouts, classes, etc.
This entitlement crap needs to stop at UGA.

by tankertoad on Jul 19, 2011 7:03 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
That, I think, is the fundamental problem.
The leaders are guys like Aaron Murray (sophomore), Ray Drew (freshman), and Brice Ramsey (verbal commitment). That will pay dividends down the line, but senior leadership is something we’ve been lacking for a while.
I keep going back to halftime of the 2002 Auburn game. Georgia was down 14-3, playing outside of Athens, and playing with an SEC East title on the line. Jon Stinchcomb gave a fiery speech, then led by example by recovering a fumble for a touchdown in the second half, and the Bulldogs won one of the most stirring victories in their proud history.
Six years later, Georgia was in exactly the same situation at halftime of the 2008 Florida game. The ’Dawgs were down 14-3, playing outside of Athens, and playing with an SEC East title on the line. Did anyone rise up in the locker room? If anyone did, did anyone else listen? Certainly no one did anything that translated onto the field, and the Bulldogs lost in an embarrassing blowout.
That’s not to say there aren’t other problems in other areas; there are, but you’re right. At some point, these players have to stand up and be what the law and biology say they are: men.
Go 'Dawgs!
Maybe it's a cheesy reference,
but Remember The Titans keeps coming to mind. I realize it’s a new world and coaches have to be careful, however, I still don’t see why, in the case of Isiah possibly missing workouts, a bunch of guys don’t show up at his door and let him know what they think about that.
I have also been thinking of a bootcamp analogy. Bootcamp in the military service really doesn’t teach a lot that those young airman, soldiers, sailors and marines will need to do their future jobs. Shining shoes and making beds really doesn’t really make someone fire a rifle better or run faster. In fact, even boot camp workouts are not the best for physical conditioning. The point is they put you through something very challenging so you come out more confident and learn to foster teamwork. Summer workouts and two a days are the same thing – to build confidence and teamwork.
CMR is likely right, working out twice a day isnt necessarily going to gain that much in terms of conditioning, and in the pro’s watching film is valuable. What these guys need is to learn to put the team above themselves and not think individually.
"One thing I will never do as long as I’m at Georgia is lose to Florida." - Herschel Walker
Great Point Tankertoad..
….I spent the summer of ’68 at Ft. Benning doing a lot of the things you describe above, wondering what does shining shoes and saluting the right guy at the right time have to do with anything useful…..later in the Iron Triangle I found out it all comes together…. the analogy is a bit extreme but…individualism does not cut in these situations.
