Jacketfreude Open Comment Thread
As I'm sure you've seen, both here and at SB Nation Atlanta, there reportedly is some trouble brewing in Atlanta, with respect to which the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have scheduled a 4:30 p.m. press conference to discuss an NCAA investigation that reportedly involves the 2009 football season, which could subject the Engineers to increased penalties as a repeat violator, thanks to their previous probation earlier in the 2000s. (Egad! Was that all one sentence?)
What kind of rivals would we be if we didn't take the time to enjoy the Ramblin' Wreck's misfortune? This is your Jacketfreude open comment thread, for use in enjoying the 3:00 p.m. announcement of the reportedly "big hit," the ensuing press conference, and the fallout therefrom. Consider it a dress rehearsal for the upcoming Auburnfreude NCAA sanctions thread, which surely is coming eventually.
Bring the popcorn, boys and girls. Here's hoping some intrepid reporter thinks to interview Bill Curry and ask him if he's glad the NCAA has once again brought the cheaters to their knees.

Breaking news, hot off the virtual presses:
Georgia Tech reportedly will vacate its 2009 ACC championship season.
Wait a minute . . . I thought Georgia won the ACC championship that year. If the 2009 college football season doesn’t count, is Willie Martinez still fired?
Go 'Dawgs!
If this keeps up...
… then before too long Georgia will be the only team that won any conference titles in all of college football in the 2000’s.

Nah.
Editor at Alligator Army - The Florida Gators Blog
The Florida Gators - The most despised team in all of college football - Which is fantastic.
Seriously, when's the last time Georgia Tech won a championship the Jackets got to keep?
Every one they’ve won since 1990 has been vacated later, hasn’t it? Was the one in the late ’90s later reinstated?
This isn’t good news the way the loss of the 2008 season would’ve been, but isn’t it nice to see someone else suffering instead of us?
Go 'Dawgs!
In other words, . . .
. . . half the cost of Cam Newton!
(Sorry. Had to include Auburn in the NCAA sanctions jab. They’re practically giving probations away!)

USA Today saying same thing. 4yrs, 100K, and vacating the 2009 Championship

So far, based on what I've seen on EDSBS...
… Techies’ reaction is, “Georgie sucks!*”
* and so does the NCAA

The Tech fan is a curious one when it comes to their obsession with UGA
The whole giddyness they display over the prospect that UGA could end up with another Ray Goff is just amusing to me. I suppose they try to call it hate, but I’ve never seen another collection of fans that get their rocks off at their biggest rival’s misfortunes because they are such a predictably average program and have no real joys to look forward to with their own team There’s an old saying about what a Tech fan and a UGA fan have in common which is their mutual obsession with UGA.

The ultimate hilarity is that Goff was 5-2 against Tech
A 70% win percentage. The same win percentage we have against Tech dating back to 1960. Then again, a coach that wins only 70% of the time against your school is an upgrade over a coach that wins 90%. So yeah. I guess Goff did treat them well, relatively speaking.
Bullets from that page
- Public reprimand and censure.
- Four years of probation from July 14, 2011 through July 13, 2015. The public report further details the conditions of this probation.
- A $100,000 financial penalty.
- A reduction of two men’s basketball recruiting days during the 2011 summer evaluation period (self-imposed by the university).
- A limit of 10 official visits for men’s basketball for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.
- A vacation of all contests won by the football team during the 2009 season after November 24, which is when the university was alerted to the potential eligibility issues.
So a player got $300 of stuff and the university didn't cooperate with the investigation?
So basically they did 1/600th of what Auburn did. Based on that, I can only assume Auburn will have to vacate 600 years of wins and will be on probation until the year 4411.
In the year 2525...
… if Auburn fans are still alive…

Yeah, as much as I enjoy watching the Yellow Jackets suffer, . . .
. . . I’m not seeing the justification for the severity here.
Again, I haven’t read the report yet, but, even with the “repeat offender” rule, these infractions seem only slightly more egregious than the Boise State meals-and-crashing-on-couches stuff.
Georgia Tech is no Auburn.

According to SB Nation Atlanta, . . .
. . . Georgia Tech meddled, which was what got them into trouble.
They’re a bunch of meddlers, is what they are. The NCAA has brought the meddlers to their knees!
This is me, yawning. Can we please get on with giving Auburn the death penalty, already?

Keep in Mind
The Ga Tech Athletic department is strapped for cash (including the price they paid for firing their basketball coach early), the 100,000$ could have gone a long way for them.
Good point.
In a related item, it’s too bad the NCAA didn’t include in the “financial penalty” portion of its infractions committee report: “Give us your lunch money, nerds!”
Go 'Dawgs!
So wait just a cotton-pickin' minute here!
Basically, the only part of the 2009 season Georgia Tech is losing is the part where we beat them?
Do we no longer run this state? Does DavetheDawg now have to barf up that stick of butter?
On the plus side, if the 2009 Georgia Tech game no longer counts, I’m much less saddened to see Caleb King go!
Go 'Dawgs!
I really hope...
… that Dave has already “vacated” that stick of butter.

Vacating
They are vacating wins. They can’t vacate losses. I am assuming that is meant to include their only win after 11/24, which was against Climpson Clemson in the ACC championship game. Otherwise, what would be the point of mentioning vacating at all?
Yeah, I know. I'm just having fun at our rivals' expense, for a change.
By the way, I don’t know if you saw, but I e-mailed you a .pdf copy of the NCAA infractions report.
Go 'Dawgs!
Serious question:
Does this mean the ACC championship is vacant, or that Clemson is the 2009 ACC champion? On the one hand, the former is consistent with past practice. On the other hand, Georgia Tech didn’t have to vacate any regular season wins, so the Yellow Jackets’ division title is not impacted. Accordingly, it would seem that, if two teams won division titles within the confines of the rules, and one of the two later is declared to have vacated the championship game win, the other ought to be able to claim the conference title. It isn’t as though there’s another contender from Georgia Tech’s division that should’ve gone in the Engineers’ place.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm sorry.

for the sake
Of being consistent, I’m sure it just means its vacated. It would ne too much of a mess to figure it all out in other circumstances. Plus, I know clemson is desperate for a title but anybody that puts that flag up should be embarrassed. I would like to see conferences to adopt a policy that if games or championships are vacated, the schools should not acknowledge them in media guides, t shirts, banners, etc.

Sweet sweet manna from heaven!
Though I don’t typically wish Georgia Tech any particular ill will (aside from the occasional light-hearted jab), I’ve been hearing that Georgia is dirty and Georgia Tech is clean from my inlaws for the last decade.
My holidays just got a lot easier to tolerate.

Ouch
CBS’s Brett McMurphy highlighted this sentence from the NCAA’s release:
“This case provides a cautionary tale of the conduct that member institutions should avoid while under investigation for violations of NCAA rules.”
ESPN’s article pulled out this quote:
“It appeared to the committee that the institution attempted to manipulate the information surrounding potential violations involving (the student-athlete) so there would be enough doubt about its validity to justify the decision not to declare him ineligible.”
GT got smacked around for being uncooperative moreso than any of the player benefits and impermissible basketball camps. It’s trying to send the message that while violations are bad, interfering with investigations is worse. You just have to wonder if the NCAA had other institutions under investigation in mind when writing that first one.

Paul Johnson is ridiculous
He is quoted as saying to the team that sometimes things that aren’t fair happen.
So, getting caught cheating and covering it up isn’t fair?
Seriously.
I’d say that maybe this means Tech folks won’t be so smug and self-righteous, but I know too many clueless Tech fans.
You could say that...
but reading their responses to this stuff makes me think they’ll never change.

Year2 caught this little gem as well...
Within the investigation, the NCAA noted the combative and confrontational attitude of general counsel, Randy Nordin. He retired in December. Paul Parker, formerly the assistant athletics director at compliance, left in April to take a job with Auburn.

wait
was Mr. Parker also combative and confrontational? If so, well……it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of folks…………

There are many tacks
one should take when sailing through the rough seas of the NCAA. Tech’s example and Chizik’s outbursts are not exactly how one should unfurl their sails. Not in this current climate, no pun intended.

well…okay. Pun intended.

Yeah, in retrospect, . . .
. . . maybe coming clean about A.J. Green was a good idea, after all.
Go 'Dawgs!
to be serious a moment
that’s the part that simply stuns me about all these revelations. the direction the ncaa was going to take seemed pretty damned clear with the textbook affair at alabama. but in almost every single instance that has emerged since it’s like the compliance departments were combative, ineffectual or essentially nonexistent.
if you look back at the conduct of usc, unc, osu, tennessee, oregon and now georgia tech, each and every instance could have been addressed by a solid compliance department with actual powers to do its job.
in fact the only school whose compliance office seems to be doing it’s job is auburn since they either have kept the school on the straight and narrow with a dicey situation or were good enough to know how to hide their tracks better than anyone else wrangling with the association right now.
Remember the Rose Bowl: The Story of the Alabama Crimson Tide & the Grandaddy of Them All
I hope so (except for the part about Auburn, of course; I hope they get hammered).
At the time, it sure felt like we got a good rogering for our forthrightness. I guess it could’ve been worse.
Go 'Dawgs!
You and I
(and every other Dawg in the world) feel pretty much the same way about how the NCAA’s punishment of A.J. Green didn’t fit the crime. But, yeah…that issue is long gone. Richt was transparent throughout the entire process. A lesser man might’ve concealed as much as possible especially considering what was at stake (read: pretty much the entire first half of the season, which turned out to be true). The case is closed. I sure hope we’ve built up some Karma.
The NCAA is sending a message to those who conceal the truth. There is a whole lotta’ hurt fixin’ to come down on some folks. Excessivus sez: “Mess with the Bull, you’ll get the horns.”
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."

Forgive my cynicism...
… but until proven otherwise, I still expect the NCAA to not only allow Auburn to keep their NCAA title, but to only dock them one or two scholarships, and pay a modest fine. Like, say, $180,000.
Why do I expect this? Because the NCAA is the most incompetently-run operation in the entire Western Hemisphere, with punishments more inconsistent than a Willie Martinez defense. (I ain’t even gonna get started on European soccer, but let’s just say it’d be neck-and-neck on the incompetence thing.)
