Friday Morning Dawg Bites: Aaron Murray Returns to Athens, Washaun Ealey Departs

It’s been a short week, so it’s slightly shocking that the weekend is almost upon us already, but there’s a lot of ground to cover before you get out of the office this afternoon, so grab a cup of coffee and hang on, because I’m going to get you up to speed pretty quickly here:

You’re now up to date. Enjoy the rest of your workday, and your weekend.

Off-topic, forgive me

Kyle, please forgive the off-topic nature of this comment,
but I was wondering if there was anything we could do regarding the awful, AWFUL UGA commercials that we’ve had airing during games the past couple of years. I mean, they’ve been so bad, that I’d almost rather have them play Party in the UGA. I wasn’t sure if there was any way that we could collectively write in to the Dept. of Public Affairs and complain or something. Here’s an email I just got on my UGA email address:
"Working with the UGA Office of Public Affairs, a team of film production professionals made up of UGA alumni volunteering their services will create a new PSA television spot for the University. They seek extras to appear in the production. The spot will air during televised football games, basketball games and other UGA sporting events over the coming academic year. The concept for the new spot requires a large and diverse group of people all in line to ring the Chapel bell. The line needs to feel substantial in size and will represent a cross-section of our students, faculty, staff and alumni reflecting different age, race, sex, nationality, etc. In order to pull this shot off, the production team seeks a lot of extras to volunteer a few hours of their time. This is where you come in.
The scene with the long line will be shot on the morning of Thursday, June 16th at the Chapel bell on North Campus. This is strictly a volunteer opportunity so unfortunately we cannot compensate anyone. We hope that a large number of you will show your passion for the University by volunteering your time that day to make this new PSA TV spot something we can all be proud of.
If you are interested, please send an email with the information below to this address: ugacasting@gmail.com We will follow up with specific instructions on what time to show up, where to park, what to wear and what to bring with you. You will also be asked to sign a release so that they can use your likeness in the spot. You will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the shoot with any weather updates and last minute details.
Thank you in advance for everyone’s help.

again, I apologize for being off topic and having somewhat of a long post. I am just fed up with these RETARDED commercials, and it sounds like this year’s one won’t be any different….

That agreed...

does any school actually have a good one of those things? Some are worse, much worse, than others, but are they any who actually like their school’s commercial?

There was that Michigan commercial from a few years back . . .

. . . that showed a space capsule orbiting the earth, noted that all three crew members from one of the Apollo missions were Michigan alumni, and ended with the sound of three men singing “Hail to the Victors” as the capsule rounded the planet, which was pretty cool.

Other than that, no, but not all bad commercials are equally bad, and ours is a half-notch above Appalachian State’s infamous “Hot! Hot! Hot!”

No need to apologize, HerschelBlogger; this was a general “topics of interest to Bulldog Nation” posting, so raising this subject in this comment thread was perfectly appropriate, and bringing it up in a fanpost would have been, as well. One thing I would ask, though, is that you steer clear of the word appearing in your comment in all-caps and boldface. While I’m not terribly politically correct, there are a few epithets we try to steer clear of, and that’s one of them. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Oh, I'm not saying ours don't leave substantial room for improvement...

but they all seem to go for so bland and inoffensive to be awful, and must, absolutely must, including multiple races in every shot (is there still a 1.x% club at UGA, I think that was the % of AfAm as recently as 10 years ago).

I’d love it if we came up with something like the Michigan ad you mention. Maybe a run of the UGA grads who have become entertainment stars (the guy from Lost, Wayne Knight, Ryan Seacrest, Deborah Norville, etc) a line each of Glory, Glory to Old Georgia, or something of that nature. Or why not dock Adams pay for a month and just pay Ryan Seacrest to come up with something. His shows are pretty popular (not my cup of tea, but it can’t be worse than what we get).

Please...

…forgive me. Long time reader, relatively first time commenter. I thought I had caught on to most of the nuances around here. And I’m about as un-politically correct as they come, so I’ll be sure to watch my language from here on out.

You're good, HerschelBlogger.

It was clear it was one poorly-chosen word in an otherwise perfectly appropriate comment. Don’t worry; you’re not getting a warning, or even a stern talking-to . . . a politely-worded request was met with a politely-worded response, and it’s behind us. Thanks for your consideration. Carry on.

Shocking...

but the Nerds have always been really proud of their commercials… although they tend to include ridiculously Nerdy things like tricycle races and robots…. See below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYwm7XQQq9k

but at the very least… theirs are well done. I’m QUITE sure the journalism department owns a couple of HD cameras… Why do ours look like their shot on an iPhone?

My commercial would look something like this:

A group of 18 year olds sitting in bathrobes and eating cheetos play a vigorous game of Dungeons and Dragons with Buzz (who is drinking a Zima). Cut to slow-mo shot of 20 sided die being rolled. Cut to slow-mo shot of cheetos crumbs stuck in poorly grown mustache stubble. Cut to slow-mo footage of 90 pound student in Georgia Tech garb getting mugged at gunpoint. Cut to text:

Do you really wanna go to school with those guys?

The University of Georgia

FIN.

I liked the LSU one from last year

It was mostly highly dramatized shots of the band with the fight song. I go for the pomp and circumstance commercials stressing traditions. The ones that talk about classrooms tend to fall flat. (I know thats the point of going to college, but it doesn’t make it good marketing.)

What I detest most about the commercials

As has already been stated, is the video quality. One would think that the University which gives out the Peabody Awards would own cameras not dating from the 1980s. Or, in the alternative, would at least be able to call in favors from like WSB or something.

by The984 on Jun 3, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

On top of which

The seem to have a policy against including any of the bevy of hot women roaming campus.

Come on… it not like we’re Tech and I don’t think we want to be portrayed as such. If that is the goal I would recommend a tricycle race edited together with pictures of a launching space shuttle. It’d be a lot cheaper.

Sorry,

didn’t see this before posting my own comment making fun of the tricycles…

Its quite alright

There’s plenty of nerdery to go around.

UGA PSA

I have been embarrassed by our commercials for years. We have tremendous resources and there is no excuse for such terrible looking (and sounding) commercials.

Also, our beloved sports website, www.georgiadogs.com has numerous factual errors and out-of-date information. I simply cannot fathom that.
