Gatorfreude College World Series Open Comment Thread
The South Carolina Gamecocks claimed a win in extra innings in the opening game of the best-of-three College World Series finals, which matters to us mostly because the Palmetto State Poultry beat the hated Florida Gators in the process.
The second game---in which South Carolina could claim its second straight national championship and Florida could be eliminated---begins at 8:00 tonight. While, obviously, I wish the Georgia Bulldogs were one win away from claiming an NCAA title (and, I would note, the Diamond Dogs fell just one run short of eliminating the Sunshine State Saurians from SEC championship contention after beating the Gamecocks and the Gators in consecutive tournament contests), the next best thing to seeing the Red and Black win is seeing Auburn get put on probation by the NCAA Florida lose.
Therefore, in keeping with established tradition, this is your comment thread for rooting against the Gaines-villains.
Go ‘Cocks!

I hate Florida.
Go Gamecocks! (I’ve made an adult decision not to be 6 years old with my South Carolina references tonight.) :-)
Also, if Lewis Grizzard is wrong, I don't wanna be right

I remember plenty of jokes surrounding Houston Nutt, Casey Dick, the Gamecocks, and, well, "beating" when the four came together
There was a while there when the "S" in "SEC" stood for "sex."
Casey Dick. Andre Woodson. Matthew Stafford. Half the quarterbacks in the conference had last names that lent themselves to phallic humor.

That might be the greatest Bulldog headline in the history of sports...
… but I would, with great respect to Mr. Grizzard, submit that the following is the all-time world champion:

I assume that was after Rangers defeated them...
and I’ll agree, it’s pretty good and would have to be up near the top of the charts.
AS TKK said, thanks for sharing.

Yes.
Perennial minnows Inverness Caledonian Thistle (known colloquially as “Caley”) defeated Celtic in a Scottish Cup 3rd round game at Celtic Park in 2000, prompting the immediate dismissal of Celtic’s manager and the forgoing headline by The Sun.

Bucky F'ing Dent is a Gator fan. Well, that's just spectacular.
South Carolina up, 3-1, but Florida is threatening.
Go 'Dawgs!
If I'm not mistaken,...
Steinbrenner was a Bull Gator, and there are several Yankees who support that evil school.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
That would make sense, what with the Tampa connection.
I had the sound down, but I believe Bucky Dent is Cody Dent’s father.
Meanwhile, a double-play ball gets us to the halfway point with South Carolina up by two.
Go 'Dawgs!
Dang.
Gators pitch their way out of a bases-loaded jam. Gamecocks still lead, 3-1, after five innings.
Go 'Dawgs!
Gamecocks get out of another tight spot.
Gators had two aboard with no one out, but South Carolina escapes unscathed.
We head to the bottom of the sixth with the Palmetto State Poultry still up by two.

South Carolina still leads, 4-1, in the bottom of the seventh.
Gamecocks lead off their turn at bat with a single.

Florida seems determined to burn through every pitcher on the roster tonight.
Maybe it’s like a rec league team, where every kid gets to play.
However, not everyone gets a trophy.

Unless...
you elect to play in the Jim Delaney Invitational. Then everyone gets a trophy… even Northwestern.

Nice!
Meanwhile, Florida goes to its fifth pitcher of the evening.
If I was in Omaha, I might be called on to pitch the eighth, which I would gladly do, despite having to put on that garish orange and blue, because I’d walk the bases loaded on twelve straight pitches, then serve up a grand-slam gopher ball.

True, but you have to think about the possibility of a game three, as well.
Given the pot problems in the Gator program, incidentally, the phrase “smoke ’em if ya got ’em” may explain Florida’s poor performance tonight.

Precisely!
I rooted against South Carolina last year, because I wanted Georgia and LSU to remain the only SEC teams that had won College World Series championships.
Since the Gamecocks joined the club last year, it cost me nothing for the Palmetto State Poultry to win it again this year, and, when it came down to the choice between Florida and South Carolina, it was a no-brainer.

2005 and 2007 counted I believe
With three SEC programs in the top five every year (us, you, Auburn), it is only a matter of time til Delany either complains about a competitive disadvantage, or claims that the Big Ten Eleven Twelve Ten has higher standards for their horses.

Good point...
Was in the SC AD’s media relations dept in 05, so I know that didn’t count. And on the NCAA webpage on the sport, it’s not there yet. There needs to be 17 more schools add the sport for someone to become a full fledged NCAA champion.
In 1998, equestrian was classified as an NCAA emerging sport. Many people within the horse industry have united together to help advance the sport to full NCAA championship status. In order to attain this goal and hold a NCAA Equestrian Championship, there must be 40 Division I/II schools that sponsor equestrian as a varsity level program.Currently 23 colleges and universities offer equestrian as a varsity sport and more continue to add the program each year.
