SB Nation Conference Re-Draft Update: UCLA Joins Georgia and Texas in New League
As you know, SB Nation is conducting its Conference Re-Draft Project, and the wisest of the conference commissioners has selected the Georgia Bulldogs and the Texas Longhorns in the first two rounds of the draft, which has drawn deserved praise. The other results from the first two rounds may be found here.
The third round is underway, and our conference has selected the UCLA Bruins. Despite being spread out across the North American continent, the league delivers three of the top eight media markets (Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles), and any conference that includes Georgia, Texas, and UCLA boasts strong academics, solid athletics across the board, and some of the best-looking co-eds in the land.
We’re happy to welcome UCLA to the fold. Be sure to keep track of the ongoing re-draft process, and feel free to share your thoughts on which teams the new league should take next in the comments below.

We need Utah in this conference
So as to be the best damn women’s gymnastics conference in the land. Because that’s what’s most important, right?
Where have you gone, Su-zanne Yo-cu-lan?
Dawg Nation turns its lonely eyes to you,
Arp, arp, arp…

"Arp, arp, arp"?
I think you’ve been reading too much Spencer Hall. It’s “woof, woof, woof.”
This has been a public service announcement.
Go 'Dawgs!
I should've thought of "woof, woof, woof"
It fits the verse much better.

Also, it's a thing we actually say, rather than a thing a Florida fan . . .
. . . insults us by implying that we say.
Thanks, though.

Completely changed the tenor of the comment
I understand the circumstances that led to Coach Yoculan stepping down, but I do hate to see Georgia take such a step back in gymnastics. Since we don’t have a program, I generally want Georgia to win. It means nothing to me, but clearly matters more to you than any other group in the country. It’s the same rationale for thinking, “I guess I want a Canadian team to win hockey”, with the added bonus that I have known a few Gym Dawgs. They are nice. I blame the mistake on having had zero Athens gameday experiences since 2007.
Is this horse dead yet?

Sorry to break out my beating stick, but that horse is still twitchin'.

I appreciate the gymnastics words… but I don’t understand the “circumstances” of which you speak. Coach Y stepped down after winning 5 straight national championships. I don’t think there was any pressure on her to step down because of her personal situation (of which I believe we’re all aware).

I'm obviously not as connected as Georgia fans,
but I had heard that the decision to step down was connected. I don’t know beyond the bare bones of the decision or backstory, so I could be far off base.

As I recall (and I certainly could be mistaken)...
… Coach Yoculand announced during the summer of 2009 that he coming season would be her last, and that Jay Clark would be taking over the program when she left. That way, she had an entire season to use as her “victory lap,” during which her team won a fifth straight national title to cap her career.
To me, it just seemed like she was ready to quit on top, and I never heard any (substantiated) claims of her personal issues causing her ouster.
In fact, her relationship with Don Leeburn became publicly known many years ago, and a major NCAA rules violation related to Leeburn occurred in 2004*. If she were going to be drummed out due to that reason, it seems like it would have been done on those occasions.
* – After the 2004 season ended, six senior members of the Gym Dogs, who had already exhausted their eligibility, took a week-log trip to NYC with all expenses paid by Leeburn, including air transportation on Leeburn’s private jet.

Sorry, GwinnettGamecock.
I’m not looking to beat a dead horse, nor am I singling you out; for that matter, I’m not even really giving Orson a hard time. It’s just a common error I wouldn’t want to see perpetuated, even innocently.

After doing a great job with the first two picks,
the Dawgs’ new commissioner made a misstep with UCLA. The Bruins are nowhere near the 13th most valuable football program in the nation by any reasonable measure. Unless UCLA comes with John Wooden, they are at best a bottom of the 4th selection.

UCLA is also 13th in this year's Directors Cup Standings
So if we were picking a conference based solely on a school’s athletic programs as a whole, UCLA would have been picked at the perfect spot.
It's not that it's not about Football...
It’s that it’s about whatever you want it to be about…
Having said that…To “win” this draft, you better be the best at football or the best at EVERYTHING else.
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
I understand that it is not all about football,
but I don’t think some of those selecting understand that building a financially strong conference is mostly all about football.

Two good programs and call it a day? Are you naming your conference the Big Ten + One?

You dang tootin' it ain't all about foosball.

I contend that UCLA has a very strong cheerleading corp. Welcome to the party, girls.

All good points, especially the last one.
Media market, academics, strength across a wide range of sports, and smokin’ hot co-eds all are factors.
If we were going strictly by the current state of a school’s football program, Georgia, Texas, and UCLA—-each of whom lost at least seven games in 2010—-would have been dubious choices, but, across the board, they’re all strong programs in major markets with solid academics.
Also, smokin’ hot co-eds. I really can’t stress that enough.

hmmmmmm
we’re approaching my our girls are prettier than their girls line, but not quite crossing it yet :)

Not to worry; . . .
. . . two of the three schools are distinctly in the South, and the third is in Southern California! :)
Go 'Dawgs!
been there
and although I enjoyed some quality bbq at Phil’s and saw some fine looking Magnolia Trees in SD – it still ain’t the south :)
I can bake like a demon.
Agree...
… the women are much better in the real south. (And I ain’t just saying that for podunkdawg’s benefit.)

All good reasons for UCLA at this point--also being in the Socal recruiting area along with your conference already being in Texas and Ga/Fl (three biggest football areas)
and those lovely’s are Even better in action. O-O

Summaries of the third round of the re-draft . . .
. . . are available here and here.
I’m not going to lie to you: Virginia Tech, Nebraska, and Louisville all are head-scratchers, albeit to varying degrees. The Hokies, the Cornhuskers, and the Cardinals are not the 14th, 15th, and 16th best overall athletics programs (taking all factors into account) in the country. I certainly wouldn’t have picked any of them over North Carolina or Oregon. With the fourth round coming up, I welcome your input into which program we should select next.
Go 'Dawgs!
I don't know why, but I keep leaning toward Tennessee.
However, the current looming NCAA problems put a damper on that. UConn is in my mind also, but they might be a stretch in the fourth (even with the last pick of the fourth).
Take UConn
Unless you plan to eventually take South Carolina, in which case I withdraw my attempt to scuttle your draft.

Tough
You gotta go B1G, right? Wisconsin or Michigan State? Surely those will go next, though. I don’t think I’d take IU.
West: Utah, Cal, BYU, Washington
Central: Kansas, Mizzou, A&M
SEC: Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas?
East: Syracuse, UConn, UVA?, Clemson? ACC seems tapped out at 2.
Those are just quick brainstorms in random order.
I don't have time for any of this... and yet... here I am. I feel like Wiley E. Bulldog-y.
