Thursday Night Dawg Bites: Hines Ward, Doug Flutie, Mark Richt, and Aaron Murray
In case you missed it, here’s the latest news around the ‘net:
- At this point, I have no choice but to conclude that the universe is just messing with the Georgia Bulldogs. How else do you explain the fact that Hines Ward, probably the least likely Bulldog of the last two decades to have a run-in with the law, was ordered out of a car at gunpoint and handcuffed by police? Don’t worry, though; it was all a big misunderstanding. No, seriously, it was.
- The Boston College Eagles will play the Miami Hurricanes in South Florida on the Friday after Thanksgiving. On the one hand, I’m looking forward to watching the game; on the other hand, I’m dreading the inevitable recurring paeans to Doug Flutie. Here’s a news flash for Bill Simmons and all the self-righteous New Englanders like him: the rest of us love sports just as much as you do, and "Hail Flutie" wasn’t even the most memorable college football moment of the 1984 season. Get over yourselves.
- Has the stability provided by Mark Richt’s decade of service in Athens aided the Bulldogs in the development of NFL-caliber players? Yes, it has.
- Does the presence of Aaron Murray in the Georgia lineup heighten the likelihood that the Red and Black will win ten games in 2011? Yes, it does.
That ought to get you up to speed on your Thursday evening.

That's my favorite Munson call ever
I didn’t really grow up a UGA fan since I have no familial ties to it and honestly didn’t care about football before my freshman year in the Classic City. I grew up a soccer fan, and the Beautiful Game is probably still my favorite sport. That said, I love kickers and punters. It’s a vastly under-appreciated aspect of the game. If they do what they’re supposed to, there’s a slight cheer and people go back to not really caring about them. If they mess up and shank something, they become goats (remember Andy Bailey?). If the kicker hits a game winner, there’s more cheering than normal, but it’s forgotten in two days. So to have one of Munson’s most famous calls be about kicking? Yeah. That makes it my favorite.

Munson said Butler was going to kick it 100,000 miles, when clearly it was only 60 yards.

It was 59.7 yards.
Get it right, loser.
(I did not just call you a loser.)

Yeah, Munson was just wrong all over the place.
When Lindsay caught the pass from Buck, the booth didn’t come apart, nor did the stadium fall down. When Verron Haynes caught the pass in the end zone in Knoxville, no one stepped on anyone’s face with a hobnailed boot. When Georgia stopped Auburn on fourth down, sugar did not, in point of fact, fall from the sky.
Some of his most famous—-or should I say infamous?—-calls were completely inaccurate. I question whether Munson was a true Georgia fan.
I did not just question whether Munson was a true Georgia fan.

I wonder how that guy is doing.
Not Munson.

I still get chills - I was so young and I still remember it
“Can you see the sugar falling from the sky.” And the camera even panned up a little. I thought I saw sugar. Larry Munson was simply gifted by God.
He did break his chair though, a metal one, bolted to the floor, right?

In the 1978 game against Kentucky, however, ...
Noble Rexford Robinson did, indeed, kick the whatchamacallit out of it.

I missed Munson's call of Butler's kick.
But I saw it live as a Redcoat, so there’s that.

Speaking of Simmons, ESPN offered a preview of his new "Grantland" site
I read the first half of the summer movie preview before skimming the rest to confirm that I have absolutely nothing in common with the pop culture tastes of the woman who wrote the article, and would probably never willingly socialize with her.
I made through two paragraphs of the other piece – a long form (10,000 words? 20,000? A million?) piece about one game in the Boston-NY Knicks series. There were well written paragraphs, but there is not a human being living or dead that could make me slog through a paean to NE basketball of that length.
In summary, I hope it fails miserably.

Agreed.
Anyone who thinks Southern sports fans arrogantly believe the SEC invented football needs to spend ten minutes reading Bill Simmons or listening to any Boston sports fans. They think they cornered the market on fan passion and angst, as though the ball rolling through Bill Buckner’s legs against the Mets in 1986 somehow scarred their souls in a more painful way than the ball going through Terrence Edwards’s hands against the Gators in 2002 scarred mine. Please.

Incidentally, while it wasn't worthy of a link on the list, . . .
. . . Dawg Sports got its 6,000,000th page view today—-all-time, that is, not just for the day; that would be, like, a record, or something—-and MaconDawg and I wanted to thank all of you for visiting, and for taking part in the conversation. We are much obliged.
Go 'Dawgs!
All well deserved clicks
Its a fun little place to hang out on the porch and talk dawg sports.
