Georgia Bulldogs to Face Georgia State in NCAA Softball Tournament
After falling to Tennessee in extra innings in the SEC Softball Tournament championship game, the Georgia Bulldogs had to wait nearly 24 hours to learn their postseason fate. It was announced moments ago that the Red and Black softball squad will be headed to the NCAA Tournament as a six seed, opening the regional round in Athens against the Georgia St. Panthers on May 20.
2011 will mark the occasion of the Bulldogs’ tenth NCAA Softball Tournament appearance since the program’s inception in 1997. Georgia is 36-18 all-time in the national softball tourney.
The Red and Black are making their tenth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, in pursuit of a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Super Regionals and a third visit in a row to Oklahoma City. In last year’s Women’s College World Series, Georgia defeated division rival Florida to advance to the semifinals, where the Bulldogs fell to eventual national champion UCLA.

I'm surprised our seed was that high.
Certainly, when you get to the NCAA tournament, there are no easy wins. This field is much easier than it could have been, however. FSU only got into the field because they won the ACC tournament, and UAB and GSU aren’t exactly historical powerhouses.
In contrast, Florida got the #4 seed, but also got UCLA drawn into their regional. (My heart just breaks for them, by the way. Bless their hearts.)
Also, the regional against which we’re partnered has Maryland and Baylor, which likewise are good teams, but not exactly perennial powerhouses… and we would host the super regional, as well. The Dawgs are the unquestioned favorite here.
The path is as straight as it could possibly be to the Women’s College World Series. Come on, ladies, you can do it!
