On Saturday afternoon, the third-seeded Georgia women’s tennis team took on No. 2 seed Tennessee in the SEC Tournament in Knoxville. The Bulldogs, ranked 14th nationally, fell 4-1 to the No. 9 Lady Volunteers.
Although Kate Fuller and Chelsey Gullickson took care of business in their doubles match, winning 8-5, their teammates did not fare so well, so the Big Orange advanced to the singles matches in possession of a 1-0 lead. Gullickson evened the scoring with a 6-3, 6-2 victory, but the Tennesseans swept the remaining individual contests. Alex Anghelescu was beaten 6-1, 6-2, after which Fuller was defeated 6-1, 6-1. The clinching point came when Lilly Kimbell lost 6-1, 6-1 following a 6-3 victory in the first set.
Given the Georgia men’s tennis team’s loss earlier in the day, Saturday was not a good day for Bulldog netters in matches pitting the second- and third-seeded squads in conference tennis tourneys.
