G-Day Game Day Open Comment Thread
At the time this thread is scheduled to open, I should be standing by the ATMs in the Tate Center plaza waiting to meet several of you, but, if you couldn't make it to Athens (or if you're there, and you're one of those technologically savvy types with your portable hand-held devices that can access the internet without cords and stuff), this is your opportunity to join in the conversation during a great weekend in Athens.
The football game will be televised on CSS, and the baseball game will air on ESPNU. The day is a full one for Georgia athletics, as the men's golf team is in action at St. Simons Island in pursuit of an SEC championship, the women's golf team is in action at Auburn in pursuit of an SEC championship, the women's equestrian team is in action at Waco in pursuit of a national championship, the track team is in action at Auburn, the women's soccer team is in action at Winston-Salem, the women's tennis team is in action at Knoxville, and the baseball, football, men's tennis, and softball teams are in action in Athens.
It's a full day, and it ought to be a good day, too, so jump in and take part in the discussion below!
Go 'Dawgs!

Safety
Only a Mark Richt offense can drive 75 yards to the opponent’s 1 and come away with just two points.
At least it wasn’t a field goal?
I'm not sure I'd be worried about that...
If Carlton Thomas ever gets a carry on the goal line in the regular season I’ll eat my hat.

I'm not worried
I just like to grouse about the offense driving the length of the field and leaving with a FG. This was just a way to grouse about it without it even happening.
Good grief.
Finally made it to the stadium just now after a couple of unfortunate detours threw my schedule off by an hour.

Carlton Thomas not doing himself any favors...
2 fumbles already
Caleb King looking good
just ripped off a nice run
Todd Grantham is pretty awesome.
I believe that’s the first application of the Dooley rule in all of college football?

On the field, I hope...

He is devastating on that line.
He gets in the backfield, play over. Him, Tyson and big Jenks on the same line? Wow. Can’t wait.

Has Malcome gotten the ball at all?
I’m wanting to see how he looks, but I don’t recall hearing his name. Is he hurt or is it just the lackadaisical announcing?
Yeah, he's gotten some carries, looked decent
Tough going against the D-line though

I hate ESPN
they’ve blacked this out in South Florida, and there is only one cable provider who carries CSS in the entire viewing ADI.
They’ve also decided to broadcast the LSU/Oregon game at the same time as Boise/UGA.
They’ve hired Urban Meyer.
Mark May is still on the payroll.
Wow, I’m venting just like a real football Saturday
/feels better.

I like the format with the drafted teams.
I just walked in the door at the end of the 3rd. Missed anything special?
Just Kwame Geathers making walk-ons run screaming

that - is funny in a Chapel Show way

Chase Vasser has been impressive
He’s a guy I thought would take some time to develop when he first arrived in 2009, but he looks like he’s coming along nicely.
He has been there on a lot of plays
Which is very impressive. He looks like he could use a little more size on him though, but he’s probably earned a little playing time this year.
as thin as we are at LB
we’ll need him to contribute. Good sign.

Ken Malcome
looking very impressive so far. Very impressive. Loved to see him dragging a couple guys along and hanging onto the ball. Cough, Ealey should take notes
Yeah I love the physical running style.
As long as he can hang onto the ball he can be a big part of the offense.

Annnnnnnd...
The defense starts to fall a part in the 4th quarter.
They must be

Auburn spring game to follow on CSS?
Should view like a keystone cops cartoon. I may watch it.
Geather is going to be handful this fall
Dear God. The guy is blowing up the offensive line. Can you imagine him in there with Big Bad John and Derrick Lott on the other side? Grantham is going to love that. And then that will free up Jones and Robinson to make some big plays too.
Honestly, Richard Samuel impressed me on several plays today. Looks like he knows what he’s doing this year. Good size on him too, and good pass coverage on a couple plays.
And there is again, stripping the ball loose.
Just a disruptive force.

Sounds like
we’d better come up with a nick name for Kwame. I think Dawg Sports is the perfect vehicle for this.
Any ideas? Maybe Cannibal because he’s eating people? (or not…)

I think it should be obvious that a Ted Turner cartoon inspired nickname is not serious
Then again, he appears likely to be a terra on the field.
I don’t think any teams would take stopping him for granite.
We all marbled at his performance today.
He’s going to help put our defense on solid ground.
And some other ones I can’t think of right now.
He's a nightmare for a tackle to have to handle
Huge size, quick feet, and good hands. Very impressed with him.
Jarvis Jones made some great plays today. Very quick and I think he’s going to pop some quarterbacks pretty well this year.
Who is Boise State's starting Center this year?
Man, do I feel sorry for him.
I believe
Big Bad John should have about 100 pounds on whoever they put out there. I can’t find it now, but when I looked at it last year, I believe it was some scrawny white kid that looks like he’s about the size of one of our safeties.
Not that being white has anything to do with it
Not sure why I said that.. But anyway, a scrawny kid that looks like Big Bad John could bench him with one hand.
scrawny white kids
taste like chicken.

Glancing over at Boise's website (so much blue and orange... ugh)
It’s Thomas Byrd. That’s what their blog is indicating too. Only depth behind him appears to be a redshirt frosh.
Their spring game is today too, 5 PM their time. It doesn’t appear to be televised, but if it is, I’m sure some people might care to scout the opening opponent.
We had a walk-on named Alex Parsons play today.
I hear he’s a project.

The Nick Saban statue was unveiled in Tuscaloosa today.

Hit Parade
I don’t know how well the Dawgs will perform this year, but it does appear the recent absence of physical defensive play should end. We’ve got some serious hitters out there, even without Big Bad John. It was also very pleasing to see Samuels look at home at LB; he could be a real sleeper this year. It’s entirely possible we could have the rare team that loses three starting LBs and gets better at the position.
Is it just me, or is
Branden Smith a legit offensive weapon? Great run down the sideline in the first half with a mean stiff arm to boot.

Branden and Brandon
Apparently Bobo has permission to use both Smith and Boykin on occasion. It’s another reminder how much raw talent is on the defensive roster. These two guys, if they are healthy, are potential all-conference players at CB and on special teams. And they can contribute dramatically on offense. The critical thing is keeping them healthy.
I couldnt watch or be there but -
TankerToad’s take is that he isnt surprised CTG is getting it done, and CMB is still holding onto the green book.
I think we go 9 or 10 wins this season. I hope the junkyard dawg D is enough to get us a new OC.
