Georgia Bulldogs Sunday Sports Open Comment Thread

Since vineyarddawg got a pretty good comment thread going yesterday, I figured today would be a good day to open up a comment thread. Here is what is going on in Bulldog Nation today:

12:00 p.m.: Baseball v. LSU (DH Game 1)
1:00 p.m.: Softball @ Florida; Women's Tennis v. Arkansas
3:00 p.m.: Baseball v. LSU (DH Game 2)
4:30 p.m.: Women's Basketball v. Texas A&M

As you can see, it's a busy afternoon for Georgia athletics, and Andy Landers's Lady Bulldogs will be playing on ESPN2.

Feel free to join in the conversation in the comments below.

Also, go VCU and (by default, since I hate UNC) Kentucky.

Online stream for the baseball radio feed?

The LSU station has been preempted by stupid basketball.

Don't Panic.

Meanwhile,

Somewhere between Eatonton and Greensboro on beautiful Lake Oconee, the men’s golf team is tied for 6th place at the Linger Longer Invitational, one over par. Bama leads with seven under.

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

… still in progress, btw.

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

The Linger Longer is played on Reynolds Plantation.

I have no idea how on earth anything could be called Linger Longer.

Apparently,

“Linger Longer” was the nickname the Reynolds family gave their hunting and fishing retreat on the property back in the 1920s.

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

They turned their hunting club name into a golf tourney? Lol.

THe only hunting club I was part of was “Down Home Hunting Club”. Guess if I own a lake and 300,000 acres and built an amazing community with two golf courses I can name my tourney what I want as well.

I have been interested in Reynolds Plantation for years. Mostly because it’s right where I want to live in my little dream world.

(snicker)

(tells NSFW “linger longer” joke)

Seriously, though, everything around Reynolds is impossibly beautiful. I can’t imagine how much money people funnel into that place.

by vineyarddawg on Mar 27, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Three points:

1. Yeah, “Linger Longer Invitational” sounds like it’s sponsored by a product that promises “natural male enhancement.”

2. A friend of mine used to work at Reynolds Plantation, and, when the father of a mutual friend asked him casually what a place on the lake cost there, the friend who worked there simply widened his eyes and exhaled theatrically, making it clear that, if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it. There are houses there that look like the sets of rap videos.

3. Due to the connection to Reynolds Plantation through the friend referred to above, a group of us college buddies (not including College Buddy, however) rented a house there for a weekend about a decade ago, right before one of our number went off to graduate school in New York. It wound up being the last great blowout of my (de facto) youth—-the following week, my wife and I found out that she was pregnant with our first child—-and it was the site of my best (nominally) college party story. If someone reminds me, I’ll be happy to share the story on April 16. The (slightly edited) title of the story is: “‘Did You Puke on My Butt?’”

Georgia done with Round 1, 5th place, 3 over par.

Other teams still out, but looks like UGA will stay around fifth or sixth in the field of 13.

I wasn't watching the first half of the VCU/Kansas game...

… I only turned the TV on during halftime. But I truly cannot believe that VCU has a 41-27 halftime lead.

by vineyarddawg on Mar 27, 2011 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

So far, so good for the Gullicksons.

Chelsea helped win the doubles point against Arkansas and took the first set of her singles match against the higher-ranked Anouk Tigu. Craig just gave up his first earned run (a homer), but he has two strikeouts through three and one-third. Diamond Dogs lead 3-1. Hang in there.

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry. Chelsey.

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh-oh.

We’re ’bout to have a scheduling conflict chez NCT. UGA W Basketball vs. NASCAR.

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

NASCAR competes with hockey to have the most ridiculously way too long season.

by tankertoad on Mar 27, 2011 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And a stupid postseason, too.

They have that “Chase to the Championship” for the top 10 drivers, but during the “Chase races” all of the drivers not participating in the Chase compete, as well? That makes about as much sense as this:

by vineyarddawg on Mar 27, 2011 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

They had a problem where the points winner was often pretty much done before the last 4-6 races

taking some of the “fun” out when you already knew the winner before the season was over.

So they put in the chase and now Jimmy Johnson wins every year, clearly proving how much more exciting it is.

by tankertoad on Mar 27, 2011 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You, know, I just realized something really hilarious.

(At least, it’s hilarious to me as someone who has lived all but 3 years of his life in the deep south.)

Until the advent of the Chase, the American sport with the league organization closest to European soccer was NASCAR.

Consider the following:
- The driver with the most points at the end of the year wins the title. Period. No post-season tournament.
- Multiple leagues of varying difficulty, through which a driver is expected to rise until he proves that he is worthy to participate at the highest level of competition.
- The “big teams” get all the big sponsors and, with a few limited exceptions, virtually all the wins.
- The sport’s most die-hard fans were considered backwater hillbillies/hooligans for literally decades until large-scale TV coverage really made the sport take off in the mainstream.

NASCAR was the sport of the “working class” in the south for decades… just like soccer in Europe. It’s probably not that surprising that they share organizational similarities.

by vineyarddawg on Mar 27, 2011 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Was the World Cup ever sponsored by Gauloises?

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

… but the European Champions League (the biggest professional competition in the sport) is sponsored by Heineken. Beer, tobacco… they’re both vices!

Rubbin' is soccer!

by T Kyle King on Mar 27, 2011 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Rubbin' might not be soccer...

… but crashin’ (to the ground at the slightest hint of potential contact) sure is!

by vineyarddawg on Mar 27, 2011 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Heineken?

So they’re calling that “beer” now?

by NCT on Mar 27, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, I make no qualitative judgement of it.

(Actually, yes I do. Heineken is worse than Budweiser, mostly because people who drink it think it’s better.)

by vineyarddawg on Mar 27, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I didnt think there was any problem with the old system.

I mean, so what, a guy has it “wrapped up” in the last races and spends his time making sure he doesnt wreck. He and his team earned it, and it gives other drivers a chance to win a crap load of money. If they want “excitement” knock two months off the season and maybe tweak the points.

Oh well, I don’t watch it any more anyhow. All pro sports are just too long and too tedious.

Interesting compare and contrast with soccer btw.

by tankertoad on Mar 27, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But seriously, that's an argument in your favor, NCT.

You can watch NASCAR every weekend for about 10 months out of the year. You can only watch UGA Women’s Basketball on TV in the NCAA tournament once or twice a year.

How astute of you

… to make the correct assumptions regarding the conflict.

VCU still believes. I still think KU will open it up if they are given on silver an opening.

To win a game like this...

… VCU has to play the best game they’ve played all year, and KU has to play one of the worst. It appears that both conditions are being met (currently).

I am sure the Old Town Old Chicago here is about to be destroyed. Along with Larry Buds sports bars.

They have very, very, very little in this state to root for, unless its a good wheat year. KU losing to VCU is a nightmare here. And it’s cold here today too. A lot of bad attitudes are about to flair up.

Though I was rooting for VCU as the underdog, I really can't believe this.

To have correctly predicted the Final Four in your bracket before the tournament began, one of those lines would have had to had two names on it (VCU/USC).

And you would have had to appeared to be foolishly relying on Butler to repeat their incredibly unlikely Final Four run of the previous season.

there is likely one guy in vegas that had this bracket and just made a million dollars or something.

that is (in small part) why my brother in law thinks a lot of people want

football playoffs – because “anything can happen” and maybe it’s their school. People would be wrong to think of miracles in a college football playoff system though, IMO, because the big boys are just going to win and win and win. It’s not the same as basketball.

There's not a soul

outside of the Commonwealth of Virginia (and maybe just the greater Richmond area) who knows of any of VCU’s kids. Maybe this is the correct approach: Stealth players.

Anything can happen, indeed. Gotta love Cinderella.

I think the upsets would still happen

They would just be nowhere near as frequent even when normalizing for the decrease in teams from 68 to 12 (only number I see which would include the little boys).

Er, nevermind.

So now we're guaranteed to get another blue-blood vs. mid-major national championship game.

VCU plays Butler, and UConn will play the winner of Kentucky/UNC tonight.

That should be crazy.

And Georgia scored their first points with almost 14:00 left in the half.
