Bruce Pearl Reportedly Has Been Fired
Three immediate reactions:
1. I don't think Tennessee had any other choice.
2. Whoa!
3. This opens the door for Mark Fox to have a monster recruiting year. With two of our nearest rivals searching for coaches, he ought to have a golden opportunity to coax some Atlanta talent to Athens.

The Vols are seriously bummed.
I wasn’t sure how the fanbase would react, but the vibe I am getting is that the fans support Pearl and Hamilton and think the Chancellor is to blame.
Not shocked at all.
In other surprising news, the world has been declared round.
All joking aside, this is good news for UGA, assuming Fox stays put (and I expect him to do just that). While UT and GT are in shambles, UGA needs to pounce.
I am bi-winning. I win not only here but also there.

So is Dennis Felton...
and he has experience handling crap programs on sanctions.

I hope he goes to a school with orange as a color
It would be a shame for all those lovely polyester sports coats to go to waste.
Pearl's leftover half can of body paint agrees.

He'll also be able to recruit all year without NCAA restrictions...
as Bob Huggins did for Kansas St getting that program into the big time. There will be multiple programs fighting for him next year.

Surely there will be a show-cause clause, though, right?

Maybe, maybe not...
if there is, that would certainly change things. But then, how often does the NCAA give such a ruling? They didn’t for Huggins, and he’s been as slimy as a snail. Didn’t for Kiffin, and he blatantly violated minor rules at will knowing the consequences ultimately didn’t hurt. They didn’t for Harrick, or many other coaches who’e been under scrutiny or committed multiple violations over the past few years.

That's a fair point.
However, they don’t take lying to them kindly, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see them give Bruce a show-cause clause. In fact, according to GVX and The Tennessean, Pearl was facing a show-cause penalty from the NCAA before he was fired.
I’m not sure they’ll carry it over now that he’s been fired, but at the same time, they can’t subpeona people, so that’s why they take lying to them so seriously. It’s going to get interesting.

Not to be argumentative...
but the clustereff that Hamilton has created, and the firing of Tennessee’s most successful basketball coach in their history, surrounded by the turmoil of a mess of NCAA investigations on football, basketball, and I think baseball and other sports as well, means to me it already is interesting and can only get interestinger.

Their baseball coach may survive this year,
solely on the wedge factor alone.

The deconstruction has begun...
Both of Tennessee’s signed 2011 players have asked for a release from their respective LOI.
Tobias Harris appears to be set to enter the NBA draft. Probably a mistake for this kid, and I hope he doesn’t do something he’ll later regret. No way he’s NBA ready…
…and this is the downside of something like this. Pearl may or may not be the only casualty because of his poor judgment.
Who knows what the other roster players might want to do? Tennessee may or may not have the NCAA levy further sanctions once they perform “due process”, but there may not be much left to penalize.
Been there. Done that.

Coaching Changes arent fun at UT without:
a) some creepy guy burning a shirt
b) a midnight ESPN breaking news report
c) a little rioting

To quote Curly from "City Slickers": "Day ain't over yet!"
That does remind me of the fun we had with the Kiffinfreude comment thread that night. That was a wild one; afterward, DavetheDawg (who turned in early that night) e-mailed me his cell phone number and told me to call him if anything like that ever happened again. I promised him I would, but I reminded him that the odds of it were slight, since nothing like that had ever happened before.

Here's the kicker in all this:
“Upon receipt of our NCAA Letter of Inquiry in September, we made the difficult decision to forgo common national opinion and forge ahead with Bruce and his staff pending any further major infractions or issues that would preclude our basketball program from representing the University of Tennessee in the right manner,” Hamilton said. “The cumulative effect of the evolution of the investigation combined with a number of more recent non-NCAA-related incidents have led to a belief that this staff cannot be viable at Tennessee in the future.”
The non-NCAA related incident, multiple sources told ESPN.com’s Andy Katz and Chris Low, was a violation of the Tennessee athletic department substance abuse policy by UT senior forward Brian Williams. Williams missed the last two regular-season games at South Carolina and at home against Kentucky due to what team officials said was a bad back.
Brian Williams? Why does that name ring a bell?
Oh, yeah . . . right!
