Pearl out?
PLEASE...
Let this be true..that man is an insufferable moron who looks like used call salesman when he wears that ridiculous, Orange Popsicle blazer on the sideline…

Strange timing of all this.
They address it in-depth over at Rockytoptalk. But then again, everything that Mike Hamilton has done at UT has been strange. At least he’s consistent.
It looks as if there will be a power vacuum in the SEC East now. Tennessee recruits the hell out of Atlanta. 2012 is a huge year for talent in-state.

I agree with Holly Anderson from EDSBS.
Earlier in the day, she tweeted that it appears that Mike Hamilton is convinced he’s going to be fired during the summer, and wants to torch everything in the place on his way out.
Then, someone else reminded her about Kiffin, Pearl, and all the NCAA Sanctions that have occurred under his watch. Perhaps Mike Hamilton has been trying to torch the place all along. (Closeted Bama fan?)

Scorched Earth Policy?
Mike Hamilton is a failure as an A.D. However, he would have made a great Russian commander during the Great Patriotic War.

I agree, Dave.
There’s been every reason to believe Bruce Pearl has been a dead coach walking since the start of the season, but why release this now, when the Volunteers very well could have a tournament run in them?
I’d like to know where Low got this before I’m prepared to lend it too much credence. The decision makes sense; unless Low just happened upon the information, the timing does not.

indeed...
Odd timing from Low, if this is all true. I know he’s based in Knoxville, so maybe he’s running with something to avoid a scoop.

The flipside of that, though, is that Mark Fox ought to clean up in recruiting.
Landing your first at-large NCAA Tournament berth that counts in a decade in a season in which your most glaring weakness was a need to build depth and in which two of your closest geographic rivals are in turmoil and looking for new head coaches is about as optimal a moment as you could ask. A win on Friday night—-I’m not fool enough to believe the Fox Hounds could win a second round game against North Carolina, even though I saw the second half of the Tar Heels’ game against Duke last weekend, and they didn’t look like they could hit water if they fell out of a boat; if they made a layup from the left side of the basket all game, I didn’t notice it—-would be a huge plus for the sales pitch, as well.

Didn't see the Carolina game...
and I haven’t a clue about anyone in the ACC, really. Frankly, their basketball bores me as much as their football. I think we beat North Carolina in the Carrier Dome in ’83…and I mean we whipped them.
As far as recruitin’ goes…it’s really turning out to be the perfect storm. Whoever Tech hires has some real catching up to do. Tennessee may have to go through a rebuilding process of Harricktonian proportions. Heck, we might even sway a guy or two from Arkansas? Maybe? O.K. That’s a stretch…

I gotta say, I love Pearl's energy.
Very disappointed with how it has turned out with him at Tennessee, but he’s a good coach and I’ve been impressed with the athletes he’s had at Tennessee. I know this is taboo but I was a fan of his, and I HATE Tennessee.
But due to the mess of a season he’s had and the crap punishment (IMO) he received, I’ve discarded him as just another Tennessee guy. Sad to see, but oh well, I have no problem ragging on Tennessee for any and everything. It’s his own fault. Loved his energy though.

a few seasons ago...in Athens
…Bruce Pearl’s squad beat a hapless Dennis Felton team. Immediately after the victory, he proceeded to run up into the stands and high-five the Tennessee contingent that made the trip. I suppose you could call that energetic. It was also in extremely bad taste. It showed a complete lack of respect, but the outrage was minimal because there were maybe three or four thousand Georgia fans on hand to witness this. Any benefit of the doubt about this guy from me ended right then and there.
Pearl got a coaching reprieve at UW-Milwaukee, but his legacy as a dirt bag is well established. In his attempts to elevate his career, he nearly destroyed someone else in the process. The fallout from this temporarily restrained him. Then, he got the Milwaukee gig and a few years later, Tennessee.
When Tennessee jettisons this guy, they will no doubt lose a very good bench coach. But he’s not a good person. He’s toxic. So is his “energy.”

You're just a hater.
And you’re not a true Tennessee fan*.

still can't quite start thinking 'bout footbaw...
I have about 20 more therapy sessions to attend before I can put last season behind me. That’s why bouncy ball has been such a blessing.

I'm with Dave.
I’ll be hankering for some football by the end of June, but, after last season (and the last couple of offseasons), I am pleased by the almost total lack of news concerning the football team. There is no such thing as good news regarding football after national signing day and before fall practice, so I am quite content to let absence make my heart grow fonder. It will, and soon, but not right now.

Speaking of football, though, . . .
. . . I mentioned this in tonight’s Facebook status update, but tankertoad suggested that we use it here at the weblog, so I thought I’d share the story:
Tonight, at supper, my wife, Susan, and our son, Thomas, told me that Thomas had a pixie stick during a football game at recess today. I assumed they meant the candy featuring colored sugar in a paper tube, but they explained that “pixie stick” was “a football term.” I said I had never heard that term, so I needed them to explain what had happened. Thomas patiently told me that he had intercepted a pass and run it back for a touchdown.
I let this hover in the air for a moment, then I asked, “Do you maybe mean a ‘pick six’?” I then proceeded to explain whence the “pick” and the “six” came, but tankertoad seems to like the idea of using “pixie stick” here, so feel free to use “PIXIE STICK!” in comment threads next autumn (and to add it to the lexicon on its next update . . . I’m looking at you, vineyarddawg).
