Why Mark Richt Has, and the Georgia Bulldogs Soon May Have, Cause to Celebrate
Earlier this month, the Georgia Bulldogs signed arguably their best recruiting class in recent memory, headlined by the Peach State’s top tailback, Isaiah Crowell.
In 1980, the Bulldogs won a national championship with a freshman running back from the state of Georgia.
The Southeastern Conference has won five straight BCS national championships with four different teams.
Over the course of the last half-century, the average age of college football coaches in the years in which their teams won national titles is 51.3 years.
Today is Mark Richt’s 51st birthday.
Happy birthday, Coach.
Let the big ‘Dawg eat.

Heckuva offseason, Mark!
I’ve been very, very critical of Mark Richt. But, damn, he’s having one of the best off seasons of any coach in the country. And he deserves the credit. Hopefully it will translate to on-field success. Its looking like he understands what is on the line this year—and is rising to the challenge.

post hoc ergo propter hoc
But I still like your thoughts :-)
As I mentioned recently, from 2002-2008...
Georgia didn’t have 1 recruiting class clearly better than the rest of the SEC East, according to Rivals and Scout. (2004 was graded by both Rivals/Scout to be a virtual tie with Florida.)
Georgia has now twice in the past 3 years (2009 & 2011) had classes ranked clearly above the rest of the SEC East.
Something to remember when people say, “talent has never been the problem under Richt.” No, but talent relative to the rest of the SEC East has never been this good.
About Richt himself…
I’m a natural cynic. Not a Southern Baptist. Am not under the impression he’s a perfect person. Believe integrity with the head coach is important but that it can’t be used to ignore sustained poor results. And so on.
That said, Mark Richt is one of the best things to ever happen to Georgia. He is a truly great man.

Given
all that is wrong with more than a few coaches in our conference – from oversigning to dirty recruiting – coach Richt’s integrity is one of the things we, and the Conference, can be proud of. No one is pulling harder for our coach to be successful as much as I am. Happy Birthday, Coach!

This point.
Is exactly why I am excited by this class. I don’t give a flip if UGA out-recruits Oregon State, TAMU, Wisconsin, etc. I only want to out-recruit the rest of the SEC, especially the SEC East.
Great post.
DavetheDawg, while some fans of other teams won’t admit it, I bet some would be happy for Richt if he were to win it, too. Just a hunch ;-)
Go Dawgs!
I am a fan of the Dawgs, Falcons, and Braves...oh...and tacos, but I like the other three more.
Happy Birthday, Coach!!!
